Spice Bristol Cardiff Ski Trip 1St Anton, Austria

January 2015From 25th January to 1st February 2015

Chalet Hotel Rosanna,St Anton, Austria

Spice Bristol Cardiff loves St Anton!Spice last skied in StAnton in 2011 and it’sone of our favouriteresorts and so we havedecided to return forthe 2015 season. StAnton offers a brilliantand varied mix of greatskiing along with someof the best Apres-ski

you will find anywhere in the Alps. We always think Austria is oneof the best places for ski fun factor. St Anton’s slopes are in 3 mainareas (Valluga/Galzig, Kapall/Gampen & Rendl). The whole areaArlberg pass also includes the nearby resorts of Lech & Zurs plusSonnenkopf. A new lift also links Lech to Schrocken. Generally theruns are a bit tougher than graded but this adds to the fun and StAnton is a great resort for intermediates to really improve! There isa good choice of itinerary runs plus masses of off-piste for experts. For beginners or timid intermediates there are some gentle tree-lined runs in Lech and above St Anton itself, plus an excellent skischool.

St Anton itself is a pretty townwith lots of character & evenmore energy with a great choiceof bars playing & music (oftenlive bands) for that importantapres ski. The two most in-famous being the Mooserwirt &the Crazy Kangaroo right abovethe village, a must stop on that

last run down, just take it easy on the Jagermeister!

The Chalet Hotel Rosanna is just off the pedestrian main street rightin the heart of the village and only a five minute walk from the skischools and main lifts. The hotel has modern comfortable roomsand we think is a cut above many ski hotels. The food is also greatwith an excellent English or continental style breakfast, afternoontea and a choice of a 3-course evening meal with complimentarywine. The tour operator for this trip Mark Warner.

Spice Bristol Cardiff Ski Trip 2Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy

March 2015From 21st March to 28th March 2015

Chalet Hotel Parc Victoria,Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italian Dolomites

Cortina - a brand new destination for usWe are very excited to be heading to Italy for our second ski trip ofthe season, Spice loves Italy for its great food & relaxed friendly skiingCortina itself is chic and fairly upmarket with lots of Italian dolce vitathrown-in for good measure and our hotel is right in the heart of it!The whole area is set among the stunning dolomites, some of themost fantastic mountain scenery anywhere.

The Skiing. It has to be said if youlike a relaxed days skiing amongstunning scenery with a greatchoice of mountain restaurants andgrabbing a cup of hot chocolatethen Cortina is just the place. Theskiing is divided into three mainareas (Faloria, Tofana & Lagazuoi)providing varied & interesting skiterrains which are linked by skibuses. The Tofana area is the bestknown with its women's world cupraces and the black Olympic run.For beginners, the ski area has

some wonderful nursery slops and you will quickly progress on thegentle terrain. For Intermediates, there are a number of cruisingruns through spectacular scenery. The red runs in the Pomedes areaoffer some challenges whilst the runs at the top of the Tofana havethe best snow. For Experts, although limited the area does offersome opportunities for expert skiers especially if there are decentquantities of snow to provide fresh untracked snow for days.

The Chalet Hotel Parc Victoria is one of the most iconic hotels ofCortina and has been since 1892 when the original 'Villa Vittoria' wastransformed into one of the resort's first hotels. The hotel is only afew minutes walk from the Faloria cable car and has a sauna & spa.

Last season (2014) this Inghams run hotel got some rave reviews onTrip Advisor for its food, facilities & friendly helpful staff. So we areexpecting more of the same for the 2015 season. The tour operatorfor this trip is Inghams.

Hello Everyone! Dianne’s Wee BitHello and welcome to the Autumn edition of the Spice Bristol & CardiffNewsletter. If you’re new to Spice it’s great to have you with us, take a look at thenewsletter you’re sure to find lots of events to get you started. How about one of ourdinner shuffle meals which are a great way to meet lots of other Spice members. Or tryone of our weekend breaks a perfect way to get to know more people over a longerperiod. Whatever you do don’t delay it’s best to just jump-in right away and join in withthe fun.

In this newsletter you’ll find not only our Autumn events but also those over Xmas andinto the New Year. But do remember we are constantly adding events to our program, especially for December and onwards, so please check our web site regularly.

In October we have our annual Center Parcs at Longleat, for Saturday evening as usual we have a fancy dressparty, this year the theme is Films. Of course there is always lots to do whether it’s no stop racquet sports atthe Jardin des Sports or pampering yourself in the spa, Center Parcs has it all. This is a fun weekend and only acouple of hours drive from London so join us. Another big October event is our National Murder MysteryWeekend, this year at Milton Keynes the theme is “a cruise to die for”, we are on a luxury cruise liner in theCaribbean it’s 1974 and a grizzly murder has been committed, so dig out the flares & flowery shirts, can yousolve the murder?

Keep an eye on our web site for these fun events in October: Oktober beer festival in Bristol, Waterside WildlifeGuided, Cruise in Bristol, a Cardiff dinner shuffle and a close up magic workshop for beginners. In Novemberlookout for our Castle Come walk, a visit to the SS great Britain, a visit to Bristol Zoo for bonfire night withoutbangs and a Cardiff Photography walk. Plus lots more.

We have some brilliant Walking Weekends this Autumn all over the country from the Caingorms in Scotland toDorset & the South coast. These weekends are very social and are great fun, there is usually a choice of an easyand a harder walk on both days. In addition we have the last of our sailing weekends this year, photographytours or Rome, Venice, Cinque Terre & Florence.

In December we start our Xmas & New Year celebrations early with lots going on including our Mince Pies on asteam train which was a big hit last year . We are also off to browse the seasonal market hosted by the SS greatBritain, a great chance to pick-up some presents or a tasty treat for the big day. There is also the chance to joinSpice London members at the Royal Albert Hall for a carols sing along and carols by candlelight.

For New Year we always do something special and one of the best ways to count-down the arrival of the Newyear is in London and a Thames cruise & party, all drinks, buffet and a disco are included. You can stay overnightin a luxury hotel, so why not arrive early and make use of the facilities?

Our two Ski trips have been arranged since June and already over 30 Spice members have booked. We run twoski trips each season together with Spice London members, since I really love skiing with Spice members. Forour January trip we are returning to one of our favourite resorts, St Anton in Austria and for March we have abrand new destination, Cortina in Italy. Take a look at the page opposite for more information and also our website. Spice skiing is very social and you guaranteed to have a group of similar ability to ski with, join us.

Finally, In our last newsletter we announced a new booking system and web site would be introduced, well I canassure you that it is coming. However the Spice computer boffin's want a little more time to test the new systembefore we go live! We will let you know at our web site a few days before this happens.

Have fun on the events… Dianne

Chill Out Bike Amble Weekend Date: Fri 3rd Oct 2014 - Sun 5th Oct 2014 Place: Lluest Fach Farm, Foel, Mid Wales (SY21 OPB) 6.00 p.m. onwards on Friday evening Cost: £138 Sharing Includes: Two nights B&B, Friday evening light supper, 4 Course evening meal and guided rides Extras: Bike Hire £20 Saturday, £5 per hour Sunday Two days of relaxed and laid back cycling waits for you in beautiful Mid Wales, where you’ll cycle alongside the beautiful Mawdach estuary, as featured in Julia Bradbury's Railway Walks, and soak up the seclusion of lovely Lake Vyrnwy . Both rides are ideal for a leisurely days cycling as the trails are flat, and as you gently cycle along you can relax and soak up the wonderful scenery around you. The Mawdach Trail is a purpose laid cycle and walkers track. The trail has been specially created for outdoor lovers to enjoy; following the route where a classic railway line once ran, along the beautiful Mawdach estuary. As you cycle along, the fresh sea breezes will blow away any city dust, while you enjoy the ever changing views and watch the variety of birds that populate this beautiful estuary. When you’re not out enjoying the rides you’ll be relaxing at our base for the weekend, a secluded 16th Century stone farmhouse in the heart of the Welsh countryside.

Walking Weekend, Shropshire Hills & Gorge Date: Fri 3rd Oct 2014 - Sun 5th Oct 2014 Place: Buckatree Hall Hotel, Wrekin, Shropshire (TF6 5AL)

Arrive from 4.00pm. Meal 8.00pm. Cost: £169 Twin Share, £209 Single (Deposit £35 Twin Share, £40 Single)

Includes: 2 night's B&B, 2 picnic lunches, 2 evening meals, 2 guided walk each day This weekend combines a well-appointed 3 star hotel with a terrific set of walks in two of the most engaging parts of Shropshire. With its variety of habitats including the wild uplands, isolated broad ridges and delightful woodlands the area caters very easily for all levels of walker. For the hard walkers there is the opportunity to stride out and attain summits that view 15 counties at once. For the more moderate walkers, they too will sit aloft on landmarks such as Long Mynd, but these will be attained by a more gradual route. Known locally and for good reason as the “Secret Hills”– the landscapes with high moors truncated by meandering rivers, narrow and secluded ‘batches’, not to mention the panoramic views and historical attractions, make this a “walkers paradise”… but don’t tell everyone! Please see our Web-Site for full details.

Bushcraft for Beginners Date: Saturday 4th October 2014 Place: Forest of Dean 10pm to approx. 4pm Cost: £49 The art of Bushcraft has had a real revival due to the popularity of the exploits of such celebrities as Bear Grylls and Ray Mears. So we’ve teamed up with the experts at Forest Bushcraft who promise to show us just how much fun you can have with what nature provides for you in the Forest of Dean. We’ll learn such vital survival skills as building fires and lighting them using modern and primitive fire technology. Shelter building. Tree and plant appreciation. Foraging for food. Knife and axe skills and basic woodcraft ..and much more. It’s a very sociable day, as we learn a lot of our skills as a group around the campfire. Any you never know when those skills might save your life or someone elses! Bring a packed lunch (to supplement our foraging!). Hot drinks are provided throughout.

Dinner Shuffle - Browns, Bristol Date: Saturday 4th October 2014 Place: 38 Queens Road, Clifton, Bristol (BS8 1RE) 7.15p.m. in Browns Bar Cost: £32 Extras: Drinks Includes: 3 Course Shuffle Meal, Service, Spice Host This evening sees the return of one of our most popular and well attended events – the Dinner Shuffle. The concept is very simple but will give you the opportunity to meet and chat to many other members during the course of the evening. A shuffle is where half of us move places after Starters, and the other half move after the Main Course. We’ll then do the same thing again before dessert so that you get to sit in three different places with three groups of people during the evening. This is an easy way to socialise and helps you meet a lot of new people! Please see our we sote for more information.

We’ll also be having a 2 course meal with a main course and a dessert. After the comedy the bar stays open till late for drinking and dancing. It’s a great night out where we all get to EAT ... DRINK ... LAUGH ... DANCE..... !!!

Western Style Rifle Shooting Afternoon Date: Saturday 4th October 2014 Place: Birmingham Shooting Centre, Hockley (B18 7RL) Choose Time Slot when booking Cost: Important! £4 Member Extras: Pay balance of £25.00 on arrival at club

Cost is £29 – PAID AS - £4 deposit to Spice to book. Balance of £25 to club on arrival (no credit cards) Includes approximately 50 rounds of ammunition

With extremely tight firearms laws, it is rare to find opportunities for our members to fire live ammunition. However, under close expert supervision, here’s an opportunity to fire Western Style Lever Action Rifles (like John Wayne used!). They are 357 Magnum Calibre, but recoil is similar to that of a full power spring action air rifle, so you don’t need to be built like a cowboy! After booking in (bring photo ID such as passport or driving licence), we will have a safety talk including range rules and weapon handling safety and etiquette. Afterwards, we can relax in the club bar. Important Since this event is run in line with current firearms legislation please see our web site for some important requirements before booking & directions.

Disc Golf in Bristol Date: Sunday 5th October 2014 Place: Lyncombe Drive, Churchill, N Somerset (BS25 5PQ) Mendip Activity Centre – Reception at 10:30am Cost: £6 Includes: Disc Hire, Scorecard, Map, Spice Host It’s different, zany and sporty and perfect for having some fun! Join us today as we try out the latest craze, Disc Golf. Just like traditional golf, the object of the game is to complete each hole in as few shots as possible. With disc golf you throw a flying disc or Frisbee® rather than hit a ball, and to complete a hole you have to land the disc in an elevated metal basket. Wherever your disc lands, that's where you make your next throw or 'play your next shot'. The ‘winner’ is the person with the lowest score. Mendip's New 10 Hole Disc Golf Course, one of only 35 in the country, winds through beautiful woodland and over rolling Mendip hill tops with stunning views. Disc Golf is a great way to enjoy the outdoors, get active and have fun trying something new with friends. Join us today to try out this unusual sport.

Sugarloaf Ramble - Brecon Beacons Date: Sunday 5th October 2014 Place: Brecon Beacons (SO 270 165) at 10.30am PROMPT START Cost: £6 Member, £7 Guest This walk with Alan Roberts is aimed at regular Walkers with a very good level of fitness, as there is one very long ascent and a number of smaller ascents a distance of 9 miles. The walk starts at the foot of the Sugar Loaf where we begin by following footpaths, tracks and country lanes around the foot of the Sugar Loaf. In the afternoon after lunch we make the long ascent to the very top of the Sugar Loaf. The views needless to say are spectacular, overlooking the many hills and valleys of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

Tank Driving Taster Leicestershire Date: Sunday 5th October 2014 Place: Lutterworth, Leicestershire (LE17 6NW) 10am (allow around 1 hour on site) Cost: £59 Member, £69 Guest Includes: tank driving, tank ride and entry to museum This is the perfect introduction to driving a tank. On arrival we’ll be put into crews of 3 per tank. You will be issued with your uniform and a helmet and once dressed, you will be introduced to your instructor and 'home' for the next hour, one of the fleet of fifteen turreted FV432 tanks. After a briefing on the vehicle you will take it in turns to drive 2 laps around the beautiful Leicestershire countryside, once a World War II bombing range- initially with the hatch open and then under battle conditions looking through the periscope. When it’s not your turn to drive, you will sit in the turret seat and enjoy the tank ride! Who doesn’t want the chance to have full and complete control of a tank at least once in their lives?!

Waterside Wildlife Guided Cruise Bristol Date: Sunday 5th October 2014 Place: Gas Ferry Road, Bristol (BS1 6TY) Bristol Ferry Boats at the SS Great Britain at 2pm Cost: £21 Includes: Boat Trip with Waterside Wildlife Tour commentated by Ed Drewitt Ever wondered what wildlife lives in the Avon Gorge? Center Parcs - Longleat Date: Fri 10th Oct 2014 - Mon 13th Oct 2014 Place: Longleat Forest, Wiltshire Arrive from 2.00p.m. Cost: £144 Twin/Double Share, £224 Single (Deposit £50) Includes: Includes: 3 Nights’ Accommodation,

Friday Welcome Drinks, Saturday Disco, Spice Events Programme. Upgraded Accommodation (Woodland Lodges) in Central Area Free ‘Mixer’ Dance Sessions on Saturday Saturday Night Fancy Dress Theme – “Films”

Center Parcs weekends are now a Spice institution, brilliant activity breaks with as much sport or relaxation as you can cope with. Longleat Forest is situated on the edge of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. Longleat Forest has a spectacular landscape with hundred-year-old giant redwoods that tower above forest glades of every shade of green. There is an elevated boardwalk that links the hilltop and the valley below while scenic cycle paths give views down to the lake. There is plenty to do at Center Parcs – in the valley there is the impressive Jardin des Sports (badminton, squash, golf simulator), with the Aqua Sana and Spa (sauna, herbal bath, ice room) nestled nearby. Up through the trees, you’ll come upon the classically French Village Square with its Grand Café (continental bar and brasserie) and La Sapinière (high standard of French and British cuisine), and an alpine-style Pancake House (traditional Dutch pancakes, cooked freshly to order on a special pancake griddle). The sub-tropical paradise (free entry) is the centre of attraction with crashing waves, exhilarating flumes, whirlpools and thrilling rapids. You can spend all day in the 'dome' which is tropically heated, or you can move outdoors - tennis, squash, sailing, bikes, canoeing, aerobics, roller skating, bowls, archery, falconry - the list is endless...(extra cost for these). Some of you may have met him at our Polo days, and may also know that he is an upcoming actor with numerous TV, Film and Theatre appearances. For obvious safety reasons, we will not be allowed to actually hit each other with our jousts as death often results from that – and such bravery is not deemed culturally appropriate to the modern age! However, they use a quitaine (or dummy) to take the impact. On arrival you will be given a safety briefing and then your riding will be assessed. You will learn basic jousting skills such as hitting the quintaine and learn basic sword and staff fighting. Being a knight also involves being dressed in medieval costume. Traditionally jousting was only permitted for men to partake in, but fear not we take lady knights too!! So come and throw down the gauntlet and challenge the men! No real riding experience is needed in order to participate in the jousting, but would be an advantage for certain activities. For safety reasons if the instructor on the day feels your riding is not strong enough for certain tasks, you will make it up in other activities. Reasonable level of fitness is required as you will be in the saddle and partaking in many tasks for most of the day. Max weight is 20 stone. There is no height restriction.

It originated as an Augustinian Abbey, founded c. 1140 by prominent local citizen, Robert Fitzharding, who became first Lord Berkeley. The transepts of the church date from this period, but its most vivid remains can be seen in the Chapter House and Abbey Gatehouse. The Chapter House is a stunning Romanesque gem dating from c. 1160, one of the most important buildings of its era in the country, with stone walls decorated with a series of intricate, patterned, carvings. The exquisite Elder Lady Chapel was added to the church in c.1220 and includes some beautiful features. The main glory of the Cathedral is its east end, described by the famous architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner as 'superior to anything else built in England and indeed in Europe at the same time'. This is one of the finest examples in the world of a medieval 'hall church', with the vaulted ceilings in the nave, choir, and aisles all at the same height. Today we’ll join in on a public tour where the Cathedral guides tell all the best stories; from when a local mob tried to pull down the Chapter House and set the place on fire, to the strange discovery of a carving under an old floor. After the tour we’ll go to the Pitcher and Piano and will have a one course meal. There are lots of classics on the menu such as Battered Fish and Chips, Spicy Fried Buttermilk Chicken and Burgers and Chips to name some of the items.

Up to 5 people can shoot at one time and all shoot at the same target. Whenever a trigger is pulled, the digital scoreboard generates the shotgun 'bang' and when a player hits the target it reproduces the sound of a breaking clay.

We’ll be splitting up into teams with each team receiving an easy to follow route and a series of clues to solve. A prize will be awarded to the best team at the end. Its wide main streets lined with individual and unique shops make it a delightful place to explore, shop and pause in one of the many pubs and cafes. The town still hosts a twice-yearly mop fair in March and September. This Trail is a 1.5 mile gentle walk around the town incorporating a short pathway along the riverside. There were plenty of exciting things happening - King Edward III ruled a land at war with the conflict with France (the Hundred Years War) in its twelfth year and Britain was slowly recovering from the Black Death of 1348, which killed almost half the population. At the Village we will join a guided tour run by costumed guides who will show us around the period furnished buildings and will answer any questions.

This year we are again transforming the Crowne Plaza into for an incredible themed Party. At time of writing, this year’s theme is still to be announced – but we’ll tell you very soon! Sofa Bed Option: Some of the twin sharing rooms in the hotel will be adapted so that they contain a standard bed plus a “sofa bed”. The sofa bed is a temporary bed that is slightly smaller and less comfortable but made up to the same high standard as the main bed. It seems unfair for both people to pay the same price, so we have agreed a significant price reduction for the person who takes the sofa bed option. Ski Carriage £35 per skis/board For our Spice Bristol/Cardiff & Spice London 2nd ski trip of the 2015 season we are off to a brand new resort in the Dolomites in Italy to Cortina. For those who have never seen these extraordinarily beautiful mountains before – stand by to be utterly enchanted. The Dolomites provide delightful skiing, there is plenty of sunshine at this time of year and the food combines the best of the Ladin, Austrian and Italian cultures. Skiing - Beginners - The Socrepes area of the mountain has wonderful nursery slopes and is one of the best beginner's areas in the Dolomities with some great progression slopes. Intermediates - The runs at Tofana are short but great for cruising. You will want to ski a few runs a couple of times as the scenery is breathtaking and this area normally has the best snow. Advanced - Enjoy the Lagazuoi Cinque Torri area where you will find a large selection of red runs and some challenging blacks with great north-facing snow. Another great area to head for is the hidden valley red run from the Passo Falzarego cable-car, and of course you have to try the famous Sella Ronda. There’s steep skiing (Arabba has plenty - as does Selva Gardena and Cortina). If you’ve not done it before and like the idea of getting some ski miles under your belt, you’ll be keen to try the celebrated Sella Ronda circular tour. You can start anywhere on the circuit and ski it in either direction. At the centre are the gigantic, craggy peaks of the Gruppo Sella. The 25 mile tour (16 miles of actual skiing) can be achieved fairly easily in a day. The tour negotiates four mountain passes: Pordoi, Sella, Gardena and Campolongo as you cruise through the picturesque towns and villages of Colfosco, Corvara and San Cassiano, and the wooded slopes of Canazei. Cortina d’Ampezzo - The most fashionable ski resort in Italy with stunning scenery and great skiing. Cortina is one of the most filmed, photographed, skied and visited resorts in the Italian Alps. Set to the east of the Sella Ronda circuit, it is called the 'Queen of the Dolomites' and is renowned for the excellent selection of skiing as well as superb accommodation, bars, restaurants and shopping. The main skiing areas are the Cortina Cube (Crystal, Faloria and Mietres), Tofana, and Lagazuoi-5 Torri, with plenty of challenging runs as well as some of the most amazing views. All the areas are either linked by the great network of lifts or local skis buses. The Tofanas Ski Area's accolade is the famous women's downhill world cup run. Cortina hosts this famous event in January and has done for the past 18 years. Accommodation: The Chalet Hotel Parc Victoria is one of the most iconic hotels of Cortina and has been since 1892 when the original 'Villa Vittoria' was transformed into one of the resort's first hotels. This elegant hotel is located in the centre of Cortina and holds the most sought after address, No. 1 Corso Italia, which is the main pedestrianised street that runs through the centre of the town where people go to see and be seen! With superb facilities such as the attractive and spacious bar/lounge with its roaring fireplace the hotel provides a cosy and pleasant ambience. Take time to admire the old photographs of the original hotel and Cortina which are displayed with pride throughout the hotel. At the end of the day head for the spa area with its sauna, steam room, 'experience' showers and whirlpool, perfect for reviving those tired muscles. Apéritifs and canapés are served in the lounge bar and once suitably refreshed you can make your way down to the restaurant with its antique wooden beams and wood-panelling which create intimate surroundings to enjoy your evening meal. All meals are meticulously prepared and served by the friendly Inghams Chalet Hotel team. The Tour Operator is Inghams (Atol 0025), for whom we act as an agent and their terms and Conditions of booking apply as per their brochure. Your money is protected via our Trust Account, in accordance with EC travel regulations.
