mycollegedegreehereatWayneStatehereinDetroit,Michigan.

Iwasgoingforengineering,andIwasworkingatSprintPCSpart

time.Iwasjusttryingtofigureouthowtomake$50soIdidn’thave

toworkontheweekend.Numbersjustmadesensetome,Imade

$8anhour,$64ashift,whenyoutaketaxesoutthat’sabout$50.

Iwaslike,“Man,ifIcouldawaytomake$50,thenIdon’thaveto

workSaturdaysanymore.”Atthattime,Sprintstockwaslike$5,

andIhad$500.Ihadboughtlike100shares,andIwaslike,ifitjust

moves50cents,Icouldmake$50.Justtofastforward,Iendedup

makingthe$50,andIendedupturning,boughta$10,000student

loanintoasixfiguretradingaccount.Iwas22yearsold,nocollege

degree,andjusthadmademoremoneythananybodyinmyfamily

tobeabletolearnaboutmytrades.”Istartedbloggingaboutmy

trades,becauseIwasmakingmoney,andpeoplestartedmaking

moneyoffmytrades.Iwaslike,“Well,howcomeIdon’thavea

membershipsite?”That’swhatledmeintothewholesearchof

onlinemarketing,andhowtocreateamembershipsite.Really,led

metofindingyouandalotofyourtutorialsaboutWordpressand

BlueHost,andallthosethings.

Pat: Whendidyoumaketheshiftintotheonlineworld?Whatyearwas

that?

Jason: Itwasaboutthreeyearsago.

Pat: Okay,soabout2013kindof?Atthatpoint,youhadsaidthatyou

weredoingstockmarketstuff,andobviouslyit’sveryvolatile.What

madeyoufeellikethiswasgoingtobeasuccessforyou?Ithink

Jason: That’sagreatquestion,andIknowmostpeopledofeellikeit’s

gambling,it’sgambling,right.ThebestwayIcanexplainit,Iliketo

usethisexample,Pat.IfyouwatchTV,orifyou’veeverbeeninthe

hospitalandyouseesomeonehookeduptooneofthosemonitors.

Letmeaskyou,ifthatline’sblinkingupanddown,ifitgoesflat,

whathappenstotheperson?

Pat: Well,they’redead.

Jason: They’redead,right?Thenifitcomesbackandit’sbeatingandit’s

blinkinghigh,thenthat’sgoodnews,right?Thatmeansthey’re

doingokay.ThewayIliketoexplainitis,thestockmarketgivesoff

signalsthatshowswhenastockorthemarketisflatlining,whena

stockisabouttodiesotospeak,orselloff,orfall.Thenitalsogives

offsignalswhenthestock’sheartisbeatinggoodandpositiveand

doinggreat.Thosesignalscanactuallybereadonastockchart,

andthat’swhatmakesitnotgambling.Itnowturnsintopattern

recognition,andmoreprobabilityandstatistics.Ialwayssay,you

didn’thavetogotonursingschoolorbecomeadoctor,youknewit

rightoffthebatifthatlineflatlined,thatthepersonwasdead,and

ifit’sbeating,ifit’sblinkingupanddown,thenthey’redoinggood.

Samethingwiththestockmarket.Youdon’thavetobesupersmart

orgotoschoolforit.Ifyoulearnhowtoreadthepattern,thenyou

canlearnhowtofindthemoney.

tryingtogamethesystem,orlearnabouttheseheartbeatslikeyou

weretalkingabout.Howwereyouabletostandoutwhenyoufirst

weretryingtobesmartaboutit,orreallyexplainitinawaythat

madethemlooksmart,anditreallyendedupmakingpeople

confusing.Ijustsaid,howcomepeopledon’tjustexplainitin

laymanterms,justtellyoublackandwhitewhatthismeans,and

whatitmeansforyou.I’vebeenabletostandoutjustbykeepingit

simple,andexplainingithowIneededtohearitwhenIfirststarted

learningaboutit.Whenyouputthatoutonline,Igetalotofpeople

thatsaywow,thiswasthefirsttimethatIhearditthatitactually

madesensetome.I’velistenedtoXamountofotherpeople.

Keepingitreallysimple,andexplainingitinlaymantermsisreally

whatmakesmestandoutonline.

Pat: Ilikethat,that’ssomethingIfeelismysuperpoweraswell,taking

thesereallycomplicatedthings,breakingthemdown,makingthem

easyforpeopletounderstand.Doyoufeellikethat’ssomething

thatcanbelearned,oristhatsomethingthatyou’resortofborn

with?Theabilitytoteachsomebodysomethinginawaythatthey’re

moreeasilytorespondto?

Jason: Ithinkit’ssomethingthatcanbelearnedifyoudon’tgettoofull

ofyourself.Ifyoudon’tassumepeopleknowwhatyou’retalking

about,assumetheyknowcertaindefinitions,youdon’ttalkyour

ownindustryjargon.Actlikeyou’retalkingtoyourchild,orakid.

Youwouldbreakitdowntothemostsimplisticterms,sothattome

letsmeknowthatitisalearnedbehavior,youdon’tnecessarily

havetobebornwithit.It’sjustamatterofrecognizingyour

audience,andnotassumingthattheyknoweverything,orthatthey

knowthejargonthatyou’retalking.

Pat: Right,right,andwecallthatthecurseofknowledge.Whenyou

knowsomething,it’sactuallyreallyhardtoknowwhatit’sliketonot

knowitanymore,whichiswhyit’sachallengetoteachpeoplestuff.

Especiallytheonlinespace.Tryingtoalwaysputyourselfintheshoes

ofyouraudienceisareallyimportantthingtodo,thisistalkedabout

inChipandDanHeath’sbookcalledMadeToStick,thiscurseof

knowledge.Ifeel,anditseemslikeyoudotooJason,wehavethis

superpowerofjustdeflectingthatcurseofknowledgeandreally

beingabletoteachouraudiencestuffataverysimplisticlevel.

Iknow,frommyownexperience,whenI’vebeenabletodothis,

someotherpeopleintheonlinemarketingspacehavetoldmethat

Ieithera)amdumbingthingsdown,orb)justamnotverysmart

becauseofthewayIteachit.Haveyougottenanyofthatfrom

peopleinthesamespace,who,likeyousaidearlier,weretalking

liketheywerethesmartestguys,ormaybedoingallthesereally

complicatedthings.Maybetheyaresmart,I’msuretheyare,butdo

theylookatyou,andarelike“Thisguydoesn’tevenbelonghere.”

Jason: Youknow,Idon’tknow.Ireallydon’tgetalotoffeedbackfrom

othertraders.Wedon’t,Iguesswedon’treallycritiqueorwatch

eachother’sstuffthatmuch.Ithinkthebigpictureis,arepeople

learning?Arethecommentsonyourvideos,theemailsyou’re

getting,aretheysayingthatthey’reveryhelpful?Ohmygod,untilI

metyou,Ididn’tthinkIcoulddothis,thattypeofstuff.Whenyou’re

getting,andI’msureyougetthosetypeofemails,Iwasoneof

thosepeopleemailingyou,gobackthroughsomeofyouremails,

right.Whenyougetthosetypeofemails,itdoesn’tmatterwhatthe

other“experts”say,you’resatisfyinganeedandanichethatneeds

ittobesimplified.Ijustlovebreakingitdown.

Infact,ifIcouldsharejustaquickstory,Ihadamembershipsite

before,andInevergotitover$500amonth.Whenpeoplewould

cancel,wewouldemailthem,andwhenIsaywe,me,myself,Iwas

theassistant,Iwaseverything,butItalkinthirdperson.Iwould

emailthemandsay,“Why’dyoucancel?”Peoplewouldsay,thisis

tooadvanced,it’skindofovermyhead.Infact,Iwaslike,“Well,I

don’twanttoteachthebasicstuff,I’manoptionstrader,I’mhere

fortheadvancedpeople.”Thenafterthelastpersoncancelledone

day,anditwentfrom$500to0,Iwaslike,I’mgoingtogivethese

peoplewhattheywant.I’mgoingtocreatethemostbasiccourse,

andI’mgoingtogiveittothem.That’swhatchangedmylife.

WhatIthoughtwassimple,and“Oheverybodyknowshowtoopen

atradingaccountonline,”that’soneofmytopvideos.Ifoundonce

Iwantedtoteachorwhateverybodyelsewasteaching,butwhat

simple.Youjustuploadthevideo,youputyourtext,yourcomments,

almostlikeablogpost,ashortenedblogpost.Thenthetargetingis

solaserfocused,you’vegotsomanywaysyoucango,Ijustkindof

mapoutwhowouldbemyidealaudience,who’slookingforsimilar

contentonline,orfollowingsimilarpeople,orjustlookingforthe

keywordstockmarket,orsomethinglikethat.ThenIjusttarget

people.Ididtakeacoupleofonlinecoursesinit,butforthemost

partonceyougetinthere,andyoukindofunderstandthepower

editor,whichasmanysoftwareupgradesthey’vedone,it’sreally

simpletousenow.
