Aims:• To update parents and carers regarding the

requirements for spelling and grammar in the new National Curriculum

• To share our new RWInc spelling programme

• To inform parents and carers about spelling rules, lists and home - school learning

• To inform parents and carers about new assessment arrangements for Year 2 children for this year

Criteria for spelling:

WORKING AT THE EXPECTED STANDARD

• Segmenting spoken words into phonemes and representing these by graphemes, spelling many correctly

• Spelling many common exception words

• Spelling some words with contracted forms

• Adding suffixes to spell some words correctly in their writing- e.g. –ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly

Children asked to find and log their own spellings to learn

Additionally, children will be given lists of words (between 15 and 20) to learn.

Word TimePrinciples:• Securing the three sets of sounds from

the RWInc scheme• Securing accurate spelling of the

Common Exception Words from previous years

• Learning different spellings for the same sound – i.e. ay, a-e, ai, and distinguishing between these in common words

• Reading and writing these words Lists of spellings sent home from each spelling group will be different and reflect the teaching and learning current in each group. Some children will have CEW words to learn specific to their needs.

Phonic Screening

Retaken in Year 2 in June 2016 if

• they did not meet the required pass mark when they were in Year 1• Child did not take the test while

they in Year 1, for whatever reason• School has no record of their

test result ( i.e. new admission)

Spelling in Writing

• Marking Code: ‘C’ if the error is with a Common Exception Word – the children have these words in their learning environment and they are expected to spell them correctly – they have the responsibility for getting these right or self correcting

• ‘C’ if the spelling mistake is in a topic word – a spelling linked to the current topic or theme

• Ticks to indicate where a spelling is right•

• Allowing the children to use a dotted line under tricky words
