Quarterly Newsletter Spring 2014 PRINCIPAL’S CORNER By Patrick McKee, Principal As we head into the Spring, I am very proud to share that 100% of our classrooms at La Verne Heights Elementary School have been named Model Accelerated Reader classrooms by Renaissance Learning. In addition, our Library has been named a Master Library and our school has been named a Master School. This is an outstanding accomplishment, in that it shows we have developed a successful, data proven differentiated reading program that supports the individualized learning needs of all of our students. This is a first for Bonita Unified School District, and we are truly proud of this accomplishment. As we head into March Madness, sponsored by Rubio’s restaurant, we encourage our students to continue reading. Our focus for March is for students to read just 10 books by April 7 th . In preparation for the new Common Core Standards, books for students in grades 3-5 need to be non-fiction. We are so proud of LVH’s outstanding reading success! Spelling Bee Champs We did it! La Verne Heights made history once again, and this time it was in Spelling. Seven amazing spellers represented La Verne Heights at the Bonita Unified School District’s 10 th Annual Spelling Bee : Jacob Flores, Raven Elftman, David Piedra, Ainsley Bird, Jordyn Goluskin, Analisa Eckler, and Sebastian Sanchez- Figueroa. After nine rounds of intense spelling, 4 th Grader David Piedra wiped out the competition and scored second place overall! The LA Times Festival of Books is being held on April 12th, and this year we received a grant from Target to provide free bussing for 150 students and their families to attend this trip. The bus will leave at 8:30am and return at 4:00pm. Students must have at least one parent accompany them, and siblings are welcome. Contact Mrs. Bellomo, as spaces are filling up fast. This is a great opportunity to explore new authors and books as a family.
