Coldwater is a r iver cave 17 miles longand st i l l going. Once down there we walkedin the r iver for most of the t ime, going do wn-

    stream. The cave is a large tunnel about 25-35 f t wide and 10-15 f t high, with a 15-25 f twide water stream.

The cave has plenty of large-size decora-t ion. We saw large stalact i tes (several feetlong), plenty of giant f lowstones and r im-stones. The cei l ing was remarkably f lat , look-ing almost man-made, with the exception ofthe presence of rows of stalact i tes. At some

po int s there were dome s decorat ed wit h no ta-bly beaut ifu l draper ie s.

We saw blind f ish, but because the onlyknown natural entrance to the cave is through

a sump, there are no bats in this cave.Continuing downstream, we had to swim

or walk with water at chest /neck level a fewtimes. Because I was ini t ial ly very warm, Ihad the top of my wetsui t in my bag. In thesecond and deeper swim, I fel t my arms andhands get numb in a matter of seconds butsoon got warm again. I don't know the exacttemperature of the water , but i t was said to

be around 40-50F. Fo r the next swim s, I hadmy ful l wetsui t on and didn't feel co ld for therest of the t r ip, al though at some deeper

po int s where I had to swim and had my neck

touching the water , I fel t cold in that exposedarea of my body. The swims were not extensive, we mostly

walked with water at ankle or knee to thighlevel , which was t i r ing. I was wearing arental wetsui t so I had a cheap rain sui t on(which got torn) to protect the neoprene. Therain sui t pants added considerable drag to thealready diff icul t task of walking with a 7mm,soaked, wetsui t . We al l had our shares of fal ls due to the t reacherous underwater ter-rain with plenty of mud pools and submergedrocks.

I t is worth noting that I did not have neo-prene g lo ves on, only nit r i le g lo ves com-monly used for caving and al though my handsfel t cold at t imes, but not uncomfortablycold, the ni tr i le gloves did a good job andgave me bet ter tact i le sensi t ivi ty than neo-

prene ones.We went downstream for about 4 hours

and entered a side passage cal led Sinus thatis usual ly f looded. The water levels wereatypical ly low during our t r ip, so our guide -who is a long-t ime Coldwater caver - wantedto check out the passage. Adam and Patcrawled the narrow tunnel in search for the

    Adam Haydock

On October 20, 2012, Adam Haydock andI went on a t r ip to Coldwater cave, locatedabout 20 miles from Decorah, IA. Adam had

previo usly cont act ed the Iowa Gr otto andmade al l the necessary arrangements for ourt r ip.

After 5.5 hours on the road, we reachedDecorah and visi ted Dunnings Spring. Adam

put on diving goggle s (no wet suit and the wa-ter was very cold!) and submerged at theshal low entrance of the spring to verify i f afuture cave dive into the spring would be

poss ible. He sa id the passage na rrowed andwent down and could potential ly be exploredwith diving gear. We left the spring and vis-i ted a cave named Ice Cave, which is just

30 ft long and where ice can be found unti lAugust-September.

We then went to the property where theentrance to Coldwater Cave is located andwhere we were going to spend the night . Weslept a few feet from the cave entrance, aman-made shaft 100 f t deep located in a sepa-rate room inside the cabin where we spent thenight .

The next morning we wore our 7-mm wet-sui ts and neoprene boots and went down theladder soldered to the shaft . The shaft is en-cased with a metal pipe 30 inches in diame-ter; one can lay back against the wall andtake a rest while cl imbing. I t was an interest-ing experience to go into a 100 f t deep pipeto enter a cave.

According to our Iowa Grotto hosts, theIowa state government wanted to make Cold-

    water a tourist /commercial cave and decidedto instal l an elevator to give access to thecave. The cabin where we slept was supposedto become the visi tor center . For some rea-son, the project was aborted and the shaft lef topen (more information about the history oft h i s cave can be found a t h t t p : / /w w w . c a v e s . o r g / p r o j e c t / c o l d w a t e r /cwp1a.html).

Mark Jones from the Iowa Grotto was ourt r ip leader. In addit ion to Adam and myself from the WCG, two other cavers from Iowa, sibl ings Liz and Pat Davis joined the t r ip.

befo re. Aft er about 15 mi n they t urned backdue to the not so low water levels and diff i -cul ty of crawling wearing a wetsui t .

When Adam and Pat returned, Mark in-formed us that we were about 20 min fromthe end of the cave, where i t sumps, and pro-

posed t hat we tur ned back and exp lo red aside passage named Cascade on our way out .We walked upstream toward the exi t andclimbed a side passage about 5 f t above thewater level , going upstream a relat ively low-cei l ing passage ful l of consecutive r iverdams. The passage was wide and high enoughto be relat ively comfortable to move through,

but the r iv er dams requ ir ed ext ra effo rt to becrossed while wearing our heavy wetsui ts .

After about 15 minutes, we entered amuddy crawlway that ended in a dome(everything in Coldwater ends in a dome,

they say) that had recently been discoveredbecause t he cei lin g co llapsed, reveal ing the70 f t high dome. We returned to the main

passage and cont inu ed our jo urney upst ream, toward the exi t .

After a long walk in the water , we foundthe shaft . I t took us about 4 hours down-stream and 3 hours upstream.

We cl imbed the shaft , which wasn't aneasy task wearing heavy wetsui ts and leftColdwater cave, t i red, but glad that we hadthe opportunity to visi t this r ichly decorated,

big and co ld r iv er cave.

The land owners have a very good rela-t ionship with cavers and the Iowa Grotto (wehad breakfast and pizza with them (in differ-ent occasions. . . ) and are glad to let caversvisi t Coldwater Cave.

The Iowa Grotto is very welcoming andinvites other cavers to join their t r ips. Theyhave led tr ips every third weekend of themonth. You can ei ther sleep in their cabin(you might have to share i t with a couple of mice) or stay in a motel near Decorah, whichis only 20 miles away. Do wear a 7mm wet-sui t and preferably neoprene boots.

The photos of Coldwater Cave on theright were taken by Adam Haydock. Allcavers were wearing 7-mm wetsui ts due tothe cold water . This cave is arguably one ofAmericas most apt ly-named caves.

SPENT CARBIDE10 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

The fol lowing is from a tr ip report onDevils Icebox, Missouri by Matt Heuser --ed.

After enjoying this room for a nice relax-ing rest , we started our way back to the ca-

noes. This t ime while passing through thewater i t seemed a bi t higher than i t was dur-ing our walk in, though nobody real ized justhow much higher. While we sat on the mud

bank, there was a la rge Brown ba t on the wa llmaking quite a bi t of noise and f lut tering hiswings. I think he was trying to tel l us i t wast ime for us to leave.

We began to load our canoes back into thewater for our paddle out , when Paul noticedthe water gauge, which was stuck in the mudwhen we entered, was now float ing. Uponchecking the water level i t was noted that the

water was now above the red l ine by a fewinches, meaning the water had r isen just un-der 12 inches. For a moment there was con-cern we would have to spend the night in thecave unti l the water level went down. Wedecided to give i t a shot and see i f we couldmake our way out anyway.

As we started out down the stream, the cur-rent was much stronger and the wind wasrushing in through the passage much morethan i t was when we entered. The f irst fewlow spots were t ight but we were able to ma-neuver through them by laying f lat and

squeezing ourselves and the canoe through. The last low spot , just before the entrance/exi t , was much t ighter than the rest . We ac-tual ly had to remove our helmets while lay-ing f lat in the canoe and push the canoe fur-ther down into the water . For some of usthis meant taking water into the canoe as i trushed in from the sides while we pushed andwalked the cei l ing with our hands scrapingour face along the way to get through.Amazingly we al l made it out just f ine. Acouple of the group members were a bi t hy-

pothermic , but other than that and a fe w

bump s and bru is es everyo ne returned un-harmed. This was defini tely an adventure toremember. (December 2002)

20 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

A mild Wednesday evening just prior to theannual grot to Halloween Bash was a perfectt ime for a semi-impromptu gathering to wel-come worldly cave explorer Eugene Ananievto the Windy City, USA. About 35 WCGers, including members, spouses, f i rst wives, children and fr iends, met at the Thailander, hopeful ly showing our fr iend that we appreci-

ate cuisines other than our usual Americanfare of pizza and Old Milwaukee (i t doesnt

get any bet ter than this) . Eugenes host ,

Henry Gilsdorf , cordial ly introduced himwith name and handshake as each guest ar-r ived at the restaurant .

Being a Speleonews -unpublished, word-of-mouth event , Our Dinner With Eugene

proved highly successfu l. Ma ps o f the Mon-roe County survey were avai lable for table-side perusal , and topics of chi t-chat over-heard ranged from conventions to cave res-cue to dreams of someday crossing the bor-der to the nether regions of Mexico.(December 1992)

30 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

The Chicago Academy of Sciences is an es-pecia l ly appropr ia t e me et ing p la ce fo r WCGbecause it has a cave ! I t is an ar t ific ia l wa lk -through diorama that shows many features of caves. For those members who haven't seen i tyet , the approximately 25-foot-long cave ison the second floor. I visi ted i t recently andnoted stalact i tes, stalagmites, boxwork, cavecoral , bacon, hel ict i tes, soda straws, f low-stone, bl ind f ish, cave crayfish, bats, andeven art i f icial water . Everything good with-out the dark, cold, and mud! Most of the for-mations were very real ist ic (al though the ba-con left a lot to be desired). I don't t hink thatthis f loor is open during the WCG meeting,

but the Ac ademy it se lf is well wor th a shor tvisi t sometime. (December 1982)

40 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

We (meaning Marsh Kievit , real ly) have re-cently bought a new Mult i l i th duplicator

for print ing the Speleonews and other pro-ject s o f the Windy Cit y Gro tto UndergroundPress. I t is a model 1227, and, for the cog-nicenti , consists of an early version of the1250s print head and a Davidson feeder. I t

is a real fossi l , but appears to be in goodshape. If this issue is not iceably bet ter (or worse) in print ing quali ty, i t is because weused (or t r ied to use) our new toy. (December1972)

50 YEARS AGO IN THE SPELEONEWS

Hurrah! Windy City doesnt have to relyon other cave owners in securing permissionto enter their cave. We have our own caveowner in our midst . Dick Blenz went and

bought Buckne rs Cave a lo ng wit h it s 1775

date. He plans on improving the 50 acres of land that comes with i t . (December 1962)
