3

SUMMARYBy using the "System" applet of

the Windows “Control Panel”

and the services.msc “Microsoft

Management Console” Snap-in,

you can increase the speed of

most "Windows 10" computers.

Page 4: SPEEDING UP “WINDOWS 10”aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winhardsig/speedupWindows/win10speedup.pdf · with Windows' "System Restore" ... Use services.msc To Disable Some Services •

4

BASIC STRATEGY

• No direct editing of the “registry”

• Make reversible changes to the

"Windows.." operating system

• Make “image backups” and

“restore points”, prior to making

changes

• Take advantage of the

compounding effects of multiple

speedup tweaks

Page 5: SPEEDING UP “WINDOWS 10”aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winhardsig/speedupWindows/win10speedup.pdf · with Windows' "System Restore" ... Use services.msc To Disable Some Services •

5

PROCEDURE & TOPICS

• Step 1: Make an image backup

of your "Windows" hard drive

• Step 2: Create a “restore point”

with Windows' "System Restore"

• Step 3: Set “Visual Effects” for

“..best performance”

• Step 4: Supersize the swap file

Page 6: SPEEDING UP “WINDOWS 10”aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winhardsig/speedupWindows/win10speedup.pdf · with Windows' "System Restore" ... Use services.msc To Disable Some Services •

6

PROCEDURE & TOPICS (continued)

• Step 5: Run “Revo Uninstaller

Freeware”

• Step 6: Use "services.msc" to

disable some services

• Step 7: Perform “Error-checking”

on all hard drives.

• Step 9: Defragment all hard drives

• Step 10: Turn off startup programs

Page 7: SPEEDING UP “WINDOWS 10”aztcs.org/meeting_notes/winhardsig/speedupWindows/win10speedup.pdf · with Windows' "System Restore" ... Use services.msc To Disable Some Services •

7

DETAILS OF STEP 1:

Drive Image Backup

• Use "Macrium Reflect Free Edition",

"Clonezilla", "Acronis True Image..",

or "System Image Backup" (which is

inside "File History" which is inside

the "Control Panel" of "Windows..")

AND an external hard drive to

create a "backup image" of the

entire C: drive of your "Windows 8"

or "Windows 8.1" computer.

DETAILS OF STEP 1:

Drive Image Backup (continued)

• Our instructions for using the

free and open source “Clonezilla”

to make an image backup of a

hard drive can be found at

9

DETAILS OF STEP 1:

Drive Image Backup (continued)

• If your Windows 10 computer

has "Secure Boot" in a UEFI

(instead of a legacy BIOS), only

the "Alternate" Ubuntu-based

AMD64 "LiveCD" of "Clonezilla"

will be able to boot up and

backup with "Clonezilla..".
