Round 14 - Singapore I Introduction
The grid will fall silent prior to the start of Sunday night’s Singapore Grand Prix as the Formula 1 community pays tribute to the late Professor Sid Watkins. Credited with playing a key role in the advancement of safety and medical servies at Grand Prix events over the last four decades, the FIA Institute’s Honorary President recently passed away, aged 84.
While many tributes to Watkins have been made in the week since his passing, the below words of F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone stand alone in their poignancy:
“What Sid Watkins did in the way of safety in Formula One was incredible,” he said on the championship’s official website. “He gave his whole life to that cause, to make sure that it could be as safe as it possibly could be. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his caring and commitment.
“When I invited him to join Formula One as its official doctor partway through the 1978 season, we discussed many aspects of safety and medical issues. We agreed that we needed a proper hospital at the track in the form of a fully equipped medical centre to stabilise injured drivers with immediate treatment, and a helicopter to transport them subsequently to specialist facilities, and that the helicopter pad had to be as close to that trackside hospital as possible.
“Sid carried all of those things through, and many more. After the accidents to Jochen Rindt and then Ronnie Peterson, I suggested that he should have a medical intervention car and that he should take responsibility for taking drivers into medical care.
“We always talked things through and worked together, and he then took care of all the medical things which I knew nothing about. I am pretty sure that he is irreplaceable. You only meet somebody of his calibre once in your lifetime.”

Leaving? Or just leverage? Either way, the rampant speculation that Lewis Hamilton is set to ditch his
almost life-long McLaren association for a big money deal with Mercedes currently hangs over the 2008 World Champion like the proverbial storm cloud.
Unless his future is confirmed soon, Hamilton faces the prospect of fighting for this year’s title against an immensely distracting backdrop of uncertainty. When you’re up against a man widely regarded ones of the fiercest competitors Grand Prix Racing has ever seen in Fernando Alonso and a two-time reigning champion in Sebastian Vettel, adding an extra degree of difficulty to your campaign isn’t exactly recommended. If the off-track issues can be minimised, recent races suggest that Hamilton and McLaren could yet steal this year’s title away from Ferrari and Red Bull. The British team has won each of the last three races from pole position, with triumphs for Hamilton in Hungary and Italy sandwiching team-mate Jenson Button’s success in Belgium.
Hamilton closed to within 37 points of Alonso at Monza and, speaking to media ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, admits that maintaining focus will be vital in the coming races.
“I think we’re all wise enough to understand that people write things and that what is written is not necessarily what is true,” he said of the media attention on his future.
“I think the most important thing is that I’m 100 percent focused on winning with this team and taking them forward.
“I’ve been with the team since I was 13 and we’ve worked so hard since 2009 to try and win this championship and hopefully, finally, we’re in the position where we can. So the most important thing is that I do not get distracted by all the rubbish that’s been around.”

Whether or not the stories of a Mercedes switch really are rubbish remains to be seen. The 27-year-old has enjoyed an increasingly rocky relationship with McLaren squad since the heady days of his remarkable debut 2007 season and the World Championship success that followed a year later.
As shocking as the initial suggestions that Hamilton could leave McLaren were, there are plenty of logical statements to back up the theory. While there is little doubt that there is an immensely strong ‘racer’ element to Hamilton that wants only to win races, the potential to substantially increase his annual income by moving away from the highly restrictive McLaren environment may well prove the deciding factor. After all, why would a Grand Prix driver enlist the services of a firm like XIX Management if not to increase his earning power?
On the sporting side, joining a factory team such as Mercedes also has its attractiveness as the sport prepares for its new engine era in 2014. While the German marque’s

customer teams, such as McLaren, will almost certainly receive the same engines as their factory counterparts when the new 1.6-litre, turbocharged, motors are introduced, the integration into the overall car package, argues Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, will by definition be superior in a factory team.
In the meantime, Hamilton has a championship to win. Although admitting that he and McLaren did not fully capitalise on the strength of their early-season competitivenesss, Hamilton believes he now enters the final stretch of fly-away races in a ‘very strong position’.
“We lost a lot of points at the beginning,” he says. “We were on the front row in the first seven or eight races where we should have won all of them. “Barcelona, we really could have won that, we had the best car that weekend. But you know we learn from those experiences and that’s what life is about.
“We’re in a very, very strong position, we’re getting stronger and we will get stronger through the rest of this year.”

BrakesBrakes are under constant use. Although none of the braking demands are individually massive, it’s the relentless nature of continually braking which means they never have an opportunity to cool. This affects the discs, pads and even the brake callipers themselves.
SuspensionThere are several high kerbs around the circuit, requiring good suspension compliance. The continual braking demands also call for a softer car; a requirement balanced against wanting to run the car as low as possible without wearing the plank too much.

engineWith an average speed of under 170kph, engine maps are designed to target driveability through the lower revs. Of the 23 corners, ten are taken in second or first, seven in third and only one is taken in fourth gear, which means that the engine is working at between 8,000rpm and 13,000rpm for the majority of the corner apexes and exits.

run last time out at Monza, where they failed to score a single point since Korea, 2010.
The qualifying issues seen at Spa continued in Italy, where Sebastian Vettel was just sixth fastest in Q3 while Mark Webber spent the final 10 minutes on the sidelines.
The RB8’s street circuit form has been impressive however, setting the pace in both Monaco and Valencia.
As long as the cars are reliable (Vettel retired in Germany with his second alternator failure in six races), the podium should be more than possible for either driver.

Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button sharing the last three pole positions and race victories between them.
A repeat performance this weekend is far from guaranteed however, with the slow-speed Marina Bay venue a far cry from the wide-open spaces of Spa and Monza.
Hamilton’s ability to stay out of trouble on a circuit like Singapore is also a question mark, having crashed out in each of the last two years.
Qualifying will undoubtedly be critical, with the team possessing the potential to lock-out the front row and set-up a victory in the early going.

the Bagman’S SaY...Ferrari had a very quick car at Monza, allowing Fernando
Alonso to mount the podium despite starting 10th due to a component failure in the final period of qualifying. Perhaps even more pertinently, the car was so quick that the often-struggling Felipe Massa was able to qualifying a season best fourth.
Like McLaren, Ferrari will be wary of coming back to the field on the slower, tighter, Marina Bay layout, particularly in qualifying. A podium is far from a sure thing for Alonso here.
Now holding a 37 point lead over his nearest challenger, Lewis Hamilton, it’ll be interesting to watch whether the Spaniard takes an increasingly conservative approach as the final seven races are unfold.

the Bagman’S SaY...Mercedes will bring a substantially upgraded exhaust
package to Singapore following its successful outing in the recent Silverstone young driver test. The set-up, described as a ‘Coanda’ design, focuses on improving the airflow underneath the car, with the squad said to be anticipating a significant lap time gain from the package.
Expecting the Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher to be challenging the top three teams might be a bit much however, such has been their recent form.
The two Mercedes cars combined have scored just one top five finish in the last seven races, and proved so heavy on their tyres last time out in Monza that they needed to make an extra stop compared to the front-runners.

the Bagman’S SaY...Romain Grosjean returns this weekend after his one-race
ban for causing a Turn 1, Lap 1, crash at the Belgian Grand Prix.
The E20’s form on each of the circuits comparable to Marina Bay - namely Monaco, Valencia and Hungary - has been particularly strong, leading to especially high hopes for this weekend.
While qualifying has often been an issue for the team this year, Hungary proved that the cars can hack the one-lap pace in the right environment.
The two black Lotus entries are definite dark horses for this weekend’s night race.

the Bagman’S SaY...The seasons of Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg may
have been typified by just how evenly matched the two young chargers have been, but the duo enjoyed sharply contrasting fortunes last time out at Monza.
While the German was out of Q1 with a mechanical failure, di Resta finished Q3 an outstanding fourth (albeit prior to a grid penalty for a gearbox change). The Scot went on to finish eighth in the race, and while Marina Bay is a far cry from Monza, di Resta did score a career best finish of sixth in Singapore last year.
Both drivers should be seeing points finishes as a possibility this weekend.

the Bagman’S SaY...Sergio Perez scored his third podium of the season last
time out at Monza - a remarkable achievement for the second-year Formula 1 driver and the perennially mid-field Sauber team.
Tyre management was, as per usual, a hallmark of Perez’s Italian Grand Prix performance, and served to stir yet another round of rumours that the Mexican will be headhunted by one of the top teams next year.
Perez and Kamui Kobayashi should both be able to push towards a top six finish this weekend, where managing the soft and super soft compounds over as many as four stints will be the key.

the Bagman’S SaY...The final corner of the Italian Grand Prix dealt a cruel
blow to Daniel Ricciardo as his Toro Rosso ran low on fuel pressure, robbing the Australian of a rare points finish.
Ricciardo was at least able to re-assert his qualifying authority over team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne at Monza following the Frenchman’s apparent superiority at Spa.
With Ricciardo’s position in the closing stages at Monza having been assisted by reliability issues for some key runners, it remains hard to see either STR making the top 10 based on pace.

the Bagman’S SaY...The Italian Grand Prix weekend was an unspectacular
one for Williams, with Pastor Maldonado missing Q3 for just the second time in nine races. For the 11th time in 13 races, though, the Venezuelan was able to out-qualify his team-mate Bruno Senna, who has shown few signs that he’s making progress on his single-lap pace.
The Brazilian did, however, manage to take a single point for Williams from Monza, drawing him to within four of the largely unpredictable Maldonado.
The Williams has proven reasonably competitive around Marina Bay in previous years, leaving the team with hope that it can close the ever increasing gap to Force India in the Constructors’ standings.

the Bagman’S SaY...Although Caterham is still a decent chunk of time away
from the midfield pace, circuits such as the Marina Bay street circuit generally give Heikki Kovalainen a greater chance to shine than most. His qualifying efforts on the streets of both Monaco and Valencia were little short of breath-taking, and a third Q2 appearance of the season this weekend is certainly not out of the question.
The race, too, provides hope for all three of the smaller squads, with the near two-hour street fight in usually warm conditions raising the usual rate of driver errors and mechanical failures.
