    SPEED OR VELOCITY

    Description

    This lesson pack contains a lesson plan and a set of activities which will develop the childs ability to observe, measure, compare, analyze and make generalizations about the difference between speed from velocity.

    Target Audience

    Grade Five Science and Health Pupils

    Duration

    40 minutes

    Objectives

    After doing all the activities, the pupils will be able to:

    Measure the speed and velocity of a moving object.

    Identify the specific direction of a moving object.

    Differentiate speed from velocity.-

  • 3Preparation Provide pupils with enough background knowledge and hands on activities regarding the proper use of the stopwatch.

    Prepare in advance the appropriate place for the outdoor activity .

    Measure a 20 meter distance on the ground ahead of time. This is done in order to save time.

    Procedure

    Divide the class into groups of four to five members. Each group will choose its speaker , manager and director.

    Let the managers get the activity sheets and the materials needed. Remind them to return the materials as soon as they are through with the activity.

    Remind pupils to follow strictly the time allotment.

    The time frame for each activity is 10 minutes. Publishing and reporting of group responses will be given 5 minutes.

    Let the pupils record the results of the activities on the Record Sheet.

    Publish the data gathered and report the findings.

    Teaching Hints

    Allow pupils to use the calculator for computation of speed.

    Provide a battery operated toy car for this activity.

    Time allotment should be followed strictly for each activity so that the activity will be finished on time.

    After all groups have reported, confirm the answers given and supply any additional information needed.

    Science Ideas: 1. Speed is distance traveled per unit of time. 2. Velocity is the speed of an object moving in a particular direction.

    Learning Activities

    Review/Checking of Assignment Allow a member of each group to read or discuss their answers to the assignment.

    Lesson Proper

    Motivation Ask: How far is your home from school?

    How do you get to school? Do you walk, ride, or run? If you walk, how long does it take you to get to school?

    Presentation/Development Divide pupils into small groups of three to four members and let the manager get the activity sheet and other materials. Pupils perform the different activities simultaneously. Publish and record the data gathered.
