Speech Recognition on Chromebooks

Speech recognition is defined at “the translation of spoken word into text.” In simple terms the user speaks and the computer writes. There are many free software programs, extensions, apps, and websites that provide this function and regardless of interface there are issues with microphone use that can help or hinder the process. This FAQ/Quick Guide offers “tips and tricks” that have made using speech recognition and microphone trouble-shooting easier. What software program, extension, apps, or website do you suggest? There are many that work well on the Chromebook and the chrome browser. This link will take you to a matrix of choices that work with basic directions for using either. For the purpose of this quick guide we will focus on the “Speech Recognition” “Add-on.” The icon is repre-sented by both images to the right of this text. How do I “get it?”

Login to your Google account.

Open a Google Doc

Click on the “Add-on” tab and then on “Get Add-ons”

A new window opens – enter

the “Add-on” you desire in this case “Speech Recognition” and then click on the word

“Free” on the right side of the window.

The “Add-on” will appear in your drop down menu when you click “Add-ons.”

Start-up tips.

Select “Add-ons” then on the drop down

“Speech Recognition” then on the right se-

lect “start”

The speech recognition panel will open on

the right side of your document.

You may be asked to “Allow” the micro-

phone to activate in the toolbar at the top

of your page the first time you use the pro-

gram

How do I make Voice Recognition work well?

Control the microphone -once on it is always listening, so turn it off if you are thinking out

loud, preparing speech, chatting to a friend . . .

Speak in phrases—speech recognition is programmed to recognize speech in phrases better

than single words

Speak clearly, experiment with your “best” recognizable voice.

Do not watch the text as it is written, this will interrupt your fluency.

To promote fluency, edit your writing after you complete at least a paragraph or the com-

plete document.

Simply click on the

blue “start” tab to

activate speech to

text.

Initially your speech

appears in the win-

dow on the right then

when you stop speak-

ing after about 1 sec-

ond it moves into

your document on the

left.

Microphones—which one do I use when?

Computers In our experience a USB headset with a microphone is the best option for computers.

If your computer has a 3.5mm port receptor for the microphone this should also work.

Chromebooks Speech to text generally works with OR without a microphone/headset on the Chrome books.

USB microphone/headset you must ensure red light is consistently “on” NOT blinking

3.5mm earbud headset/microphone should work.

My microphone is not working on my computer, how do I fix it? The most common problem is the microphone setting inyour control panel.

To check:

Insert the microphone

Click on the “windows”

icon at the bottom left

corner of your screen

Click the “control

panel”

Click “sound.”

When the sound window opens select the recording tab

Then the microphone icon (the one you are using)

Then properties at the bottom of the window

When the next window opens select the “levels” tab and

move the microphone arrow toward the right.

Make sure the red light is on—
