Op-Art

The dramatic effect of this scintillating pattern comes from a very clever sewing

technique and the use of dark and light values. The powerful aspect of this

design is popular with young and old alike—especially men and children! Quilts

like these are full of exciting, contemporary drama.

Although the Op-Art illusion is very easy to create from fabric strips, it is

puzzling to figure out how it is done. Marilyn has a wonderful and easy

approach to numerous elaborate patterns. There are over eleven different

styles provided in the class and you will be instructed on how to invent your

own "one of a kind" Op-Art arrangement in any size desired.

Triad Interlock

This elaborate interlocking pattern is achieved by a very clever technique using

at least three different strata units. The more irregular and contrasting each of

the strata units is, the more complex and intriguing the effect.

The top and bottom edges of a strata unit each contribute a different looking

triangle so that when three strata units are created, six different triangles

emerge. No template and no special ruler required. To complete your quilt,

there are no inset seams to deal with; just rows of triangles to sew together.

Bargello Tapestry

Bargello Tapestry is originally a needlepoint term. Translated into the world of

quilting, it produces breathtaking waves of rhythm and motion within a soothing

fabric field. This is a spectacular class for every quilt maker. It offers the most

dynamic and creative opportunity any quilt maker can expect to encounter.

Each student will create a magnificent and stunning quilt involving a diverse

array of fabrics. Bring your cameras. Marilyn shows over 30 quilts and every

student's work is a One Of A Kind masterpiece!

There are six different yet basic Bargello strata compositions that can be created

and each one produces stunning effects. By combining them, unlimited effects

can be developed. Students will view, select and tailor their own unique Bargello

Tapestry quilt under Marilyn's expert guidance.

Marilyn is the inventor of this technique for the quilting world; she is also the

author of Bargello Tapestry Quilts – often referred to as The Bible on Bargello!

All cutting is with rotary equipment and the sewing involves simple strata seam

work. Beginner to advanced levels.

Advanced Bargello Tapestry Designs

Marilyn's Advanced Bargello Workshop will provide more ideas and

instructions than can be used in an entire lifetime of quilting. Bring your

cameras and notebooks, your time with her will be action packed! You will

work on one to three styles of your choosing and receive information and

handouts for all of the styles covered.

This class is for students who are familiar with Marilyn's Bargello Tapestry

Designs techniques and terms. The terms river, island, and background

spacer, as well as sequential, repeat, and reverse-repeat all describe different

"strata" configurations that need to be very familiar to every student who

attends the Advanced Bargello Class.

Note: This is an advanced class, familiarity with the Bargello book is

recommended.

Bargello Stars

Learn to design your own Bargello Tapestry motion and then take that

beautiful flowing drama into TWO spectacular radiating star images! Marilyn

presents the necessary information to create either a 60° or a 45° star

pattern. The choice is yours.

First session will be to plan the strata and then sew the actual Bargello

design together. Second session will be to "check and correct" the Bargello

pattern and then cut all of the Star diamonds for both Star images. Everyone

will create 2 unique "one of a kind" Bargello Star quilts. More photos below.

Angels in my Garden

This class project is amazing! The 4 full circle images created – appear to be a variety of things – from angels

to flowers….specifically, a delightful array of Orchids and Pansies and Johnny Jump-Up images. Each image

will remind you of an angel and or a flower, depending upon your fabric selection and viewing angle.

You will use the 9" miniature 9° Circle Wedge Ruler to create the circular images. Each angel/flower is an

18" circle filled with flowing spiral motion. Each of the 4 angel/flowers coordinates with the other 3 in the

garden, yet no two are alike!

Marilyn has developed a simple, foolproof way of creating these lovely angelic, floral images for your very

own Perennial Garden. The flowers are easy to create. They have no seams to match and each of them

comes to life at the same time, from one sewing effort. The added bonus is that these angel/flowers require

no watering, weeding, or re-seeding. They will not disappear in the winter; in fact, they will keep you warm

with angelic love.

Drop Shift Spiral

This wonderful class will provide all the knowledge to create fantastic spiral effects

in fans and circles. This pattern may look complex, but the skill level is to cut and

sew a straight line. Anyone can do it! No graphing is required—effortless "strata"

sewing techniques are featured for quick and accurate results.

Guided by Marilyn's enthusiasm and expertise, and using any size of the 9° Circle

Wedge Rulers, everyone will have time to begin one full circle and have a good start

on a second by the end of the class.

Ruler size has a dramatic effect on the full circle “motion” and selecting a repeat or

reverse =repeat layout also greatly influences the “motion” for each spiral. Final

designs may feature independent circles, interlocking spirals, infinity loops or

numerous, elegant fans. More photos below:

Abstract Images - Anyway You Slice Them

Powerful geometric angles and elaborate, complex looking patterns come to life with Marilyn's new techniques featured in her series called, ABSTRACT IMAGES – anyway you slice them!

4 individual classes

NOTE: Session #1 required for participation in sessions #2, #3, #4.

In session #1, Marilyn presents an assortment of (4) basic shapes and (2) diverse techniques. The both the techniques applied as desired to the (4) distinctly different shapes, resulting in major design alterations, either symmetrical or asymmetrical and from clever and soothing to outrageous and grand. In sessions #2, #3, and #4 Marilyn features the introduction of 3 additional and distinctly different advanced techniques. Each advancement is drastically alters the look of the quilt image in unbelievably exquisite ways.

Session #1 Freedom and Fun

In this class, each student uses 4 distinctly different shapes and applies either of 2 different techniques –while making four individual projects, and mastering the basics. Numerous “sets” are also explored. Each student uses the same techniques yet their work remains very unique – due to fabric choices and the “set” incorporated. All sewing is simple and easy. No templates and no seams to match!!! Just rotary equipment and the willingness to “go for it”.

Session #2 Thunder and Lightening

This class builds on the basic shapes and techniques featured in session #1 by cleverly incorporating (3) or more accent fabrics into the design – This clever addition theatrically electrifies and “amps up” the visual drama! All sewing is simple and easy, no templates or seams to match. Numerous variations are presented. Each student selects the variation that they prefer to best show off the fabrics they are using. Every students work is a signature masterpiece. You will not believe the transformation this variation causes. Marilyn is known for inventing new and innovative quilt patterns and then applying additional techniques - further transforming them into advanced designs.

Session #3 Ancient Echoes

This class uses any one of the basic shapes featured in session #1. Then students will add 6-10 fabrics in a manner that causes a mesmerizing, radiating, effect. It is magical to see each students Echo come to life…..emerging from simple familiar sewing and dynamically clever counter-cutting techniques. No seams to match and loaded with freedom to play around within the echo!

Session #4 Amazing Labyrinth

The class uses information covered in sessions #1 and #2 combined then adding another new element; an entirely different construction method. This method vastly alters the speed of creation and results in an entirely different network of the integrated images. Fabric choices play a major role and the actual uses of the fabrics within the technique are almost infinite.

Freeform Curves

No templates – just the freedom of cutting and sewing amazing curves…..Technical skills and abundant freedom create endless flowing motion - which is the theme of this exciting class!

Everyone goes home with a small quilt top! Each quilt is uniquely "one-of-a-kind" and is not duplicated, ever – even by the quilt artist who made it…... A variety of curves are easily sewn by direct fabric merging techniques called "undulations", “wiggles” and "bites".

Each quilt is unique, contemporary and extensively elaborate. Freeform curved seam work quilts from this class will receive superlative comments and award ribbons at the next quilt show.

Dream Shadows

In this class, students will simultaneously create two very traditional, yet stunningly different quilts from one unique and clever sewing effort! Simple strip sewing techniques are used and any size quilts-from miniature to king-sized can be created.

Students will combine between 8 and 36 different fabrics to create depth, illusion and intrigue. This class offers an outstanding exploration of a) close-contrast fabric relationships and b) reverse color-play dynamics. Marilyn originated this ingenious approach to create two traditional quilt patterns from the same fabric/strata composition. Each quilt is the equal but opposite color flow of the other and they harmonize beautifully together.

The class project will create two quilt images; one is a square traditionally called Grandmother's Dream and a rectangular traditionally called Boston Commons. They will each have the same fabrics in them – but in the reverse display, what Marilyn calls – equal/opposites. Extensive class samples will be shown to inspire and delight everyone! Pick Up Sticks

Just like the childhood game only a quilt!

This class is FUN and productive! Learn all of the clever tricks and techniques

Marilyn has developed for creating this layered and fractured effect called Pick

Up Sticks. Students will use their rotary cutting tools and a sewing machine

while learning the assorted technique, hands on. No templates at all…and a

very complex look is achieved!

Everyone will have a one of a kind miniature to wall sized quilt by the end of

class and will have the knowledge and skills to use the techniques learned to

create special effects on any quilt top, garment, or border design of their

choosing, in the future. More photos below.

Cubic Ribbons

This is a contemporary quilt design based. It was invented by Marilyn and

uses 60 degree diamonds to create a captivating variation of the well-

known traditional favorite called Baby Blocks.

Cubic Ribbons is a spectacular new look for a traditional favorite! This

fascinating illusion of ribbons weaving around and between box surfaces

are created effortlessly with simple, clever, strata sewing procedures. The

cubes appear as "gift packages” and they make wonderful quilts for

celebrating special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, or holidays!

The options for fabric choices are numerous with this pattern - the ribbon

area can be composed of three ribbons or five ribbons; the box itself can

disappear or appear three dimensionally! All of these choices can be made

incorporating a very select number of fabrics, or can be made from a

scrappy collection incorporating numerous fabrics. More photos below.

Diamond Dreams

This is a variation on a traditional favorite; called Grand Mother’s Dream…but you will not recognize it! Imagine a single “on point” large diamond image. Now imagine an entire field of rectangles, nestled together creating this “diamond” image. (Hard to imagine I know). Nevertheless, keep going, now imagine the diamond filled with rectangles using your favorite fabric choices moving from one fabric to another, in a soft Bargello like flow.

A very compelling design Marilyn invented while playing around, saying to herself, “I wonder what would happen if I did ___________”. When you learn her techniques, you will be glad she “played around”! When creating this pattern, students will automatically generate 2 diamond shapes. They can stand alone as 2 individual quilts or be combined in a clever way for an even more mosaic impression. Every diamond you create yields a second diamond with the exact opposite color display of the first.

It is magical to create these unique and stunning images with such simple techniques. All of the math is figured for you and easy rotary cutting and sewing skills are used. This technique can produce diamonds any size desired from miniature to king. A quilt can have 1 or more images included….numerous variations abound and any number of fabrics can be included…pure addictive delight!

Class Length: 8 hours Spiro-Graphic Circles Charting One Of A Kind Spirals Two Sessions: Session #1 and Session #2

Session #1: This class is “all design”, no sewing! Relaxing, dynamic fun, after a hard day of attending the quilt show, merchant mall and another teacher’s class – or dealing with life.

During our evening together, each student will learn to quickly and easily chart several “One Of A Kind” Spiro-Graphic Spirals. This means in a full circle with undulating fabrics moving in their own independent design. Different fabrics “dancing” or “moving” in different patterns, with in a circle is a spectacular drama. Pinks can do one thing while yellows and blacks and green and blues move in an entirely different motion and direction……Every design charted, with colored pencils can easily be made into a fabric quilt, “at home” , in (1) day…..following the class information.

All that is need “at home” will be to cut and sew strips according to the charted design you love the most…..All sewing and cutting is simple, everyone can do this! YOU WILL APPEAR VERY TALENTED, to anyone viewing your creation!!!

In class, everything is provided; specialty graph paper – designed by Marilyn Doheny herself: the inventor of the 9 Degree Circle Wedge Rulers. And colored pencils. Lots of inspiration for fabric motion is presented to stimulate you. Most students cannot sleep “that night”, following a class session - too much brain stimulation of the "possibilities"!

Marilyn demystifies everything, and a very clear understanding of how to take any charted design into fabric and create a mesmerizing “Spiro-graphic” quilt will give you confidence to proceed…….this class will open doors in your mind and add talent to your quilting world, you may even win your first award, A First Place Ribbon For You!!!

Session #2: This is a hands on, sewing class from start to finish, actually making your favorite spiral from those previously charted…. Each student starts with their own favorite charted Spiro-graphic design and a pile of

cloth. We audition and select fabrics for each of the different spiral paths and patterns in the design and begin cutting, sewing strips…the sewing is silly simple, and the creation of 9-Degree wedges goes quickly….

A surprise - you actually get two (2) complete spiral circles when using the graph chart and Marilyn’s instructions! The 2 circular Spiro graphic images are not visually alike at all! Some students prefer the one they did not chart over the one they did – what fun! The 2 circles can interlock for an even more amazing “infinity” (figure 8) set!

Tango!

This is a very elegant and delicate Spiral image Design. The Joy is - IT IS VERY EASY (and quick) TO MAKE!!! There are No seams to match! It is a one day project – start to finish! Not only that, it can be made in a number of sizes and used as a Christmas Tree Skirt, a Table runner, or the back of a wonderful wearable garment. I use them for flowers! Tree Skirts – clothing – wall hangings and table runners to placemats too!

You can feature any number of FABRICS - Select fabrics you love – about 9 – 15 total. Larger number = larger project! BE SURE TO HAVE CONTRAST!! Contrast by color, value, print scale, always include at least 1 (SMALL TIGHT) stripe and 2 shocking Zingers, i.e. weird ones!!! TRUST ME!

Topsey Turvey Table Toppers

If you love to decorate table tops, you will love this class! You will create dramatic results quickly using Marilyn’s clever strata sewing ideas and her amazing 9 Degree Circle Wedge Ruler.

THERE ARE NO SEAMS TO MATCH, everyone will succeed! You will come to class with strips sewn together for 3 very different projects (see details in supply list) and leave class with 3 beautiful unique table toppers. Each one will be very different!

It will make you smile and warm your heart to make such adorable, loveable and “cute” garden elements…they can each stand alone on a garment, be featured in a stunning unique wall quilt or enliven a happy, clever baby quit. They can certainly join any garden of flowers!

Egyptian Wheel of Wonder

This class is dynamic and inspiring and refreshing! We will be very productive and quickly create numerous visual delights!

Each student will quickly understand the fabric requirements and then make 2-3 of her own Wheels of Wonder, in assorted sizes for a mesmerizing collage.

As a group we will see the amazing power of these wheels as they unite and make a mosaic featuring all the wheels. Easy to sew and make - very inspiring, and NO Seams to Match!!!!
