dealers feel that disregarding deprecia-tion schedules or formulas, the actualdepreciation of tractors, mowers, etc. islargely contingent upon the treatmentthese units receive and how often theyare checked and repaired. Some supts.added that they feel the best time totrade in tractor equipment is about everyseven years, enabling them to avoid majoroverhauls and getting what they considerto be the best deal, pricewise. In addi-tion, the supts. say that from an effi-ciency standpoint, it isn't advisable tokeep tractors more than seven years.

Cites Finance PlanAccording to J. M.. Kaufman, sales

promotion manager for Toro Manufac-turing Corp., his company is presentlyengaged in a thorough study of repairs, salvage values and other factors pertain-ing to depreciation and replacement, butit will be some time before it is com-pleted.

However, in 1960, when Toro was set-ting up its fleet financing plan that

Februaryl 1962

covers both purchases and leases, a pay-ment and leasing term of from 36 to 40months was decided upon. The reason-ing behind this is that the best econ-omical period of useage of grass cuttingmachinery and allied units is three years. After this, the high cost of repairs tothe units, and their loss of efficiency, generally make it unwise not to investin replacement equipment.

In the opinion of Frank L. Lindig, Jr.,pres. of Lindig Manufacturing Co., Inc.,St. Paul, when a depreciation rate iscomputed probably too much emphasisis put on the number of years a pieceof equipment should last. What is morevital, he declares, is how many hourswill it be used and what kind of servicingwill it be given. "When a machine ispurchased," Lindig says, "a replacementbudget should immediately be set up forit. This budget should be based to acertain extent on the manufacturer's esti-mate as to how long the machine willgive economical service. But it is im-portant to find out from the coursesupt. how many hours a week or monththe machine will be used, and to whatkind of usage it will be subjected. Youcan't arbitrarily say that any piece of

equipment has a life e~pe?tancy of ~ayfive or ten years. If It IS used tWICeas long each day at Course A as at CourseB, then the expectancy is gOi,~lgto becut in half at the former course.

Urges Keeping Daily Log

In conjunction with the replacementbudget Lindig feels that a daily logshould' be kept on the use and servicingof more expensive machinery so that itcan be determined whether or not it isgoing to give good service as long aswas originally thought. At the same time, the replacement budget should be flexibleenough to cover important fluctuationsin the life expectancy of the machine.

When it comes time to replace a ma-chine and there is hesitancy on the partof the club to appropriate the money todo it, Lindig suggests that these thingsshould be considered:

How much will it cost to buy new partsfor the old machine, and how much willit cost to install them?

How much does it cost in man-hoursto hang on to worn-out equipment?

Will the above costs more than off-set the cost of a new machine in a

month's or year's time?Clarence D. Hunter, assistant sales

manager of Hardie Manufacturing Co.,Inc., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., which makesspraying equipment, advocates followingclosely the servicing recommendations ofthe manufacturer to prolong the life ofany piece of equipment. "A good dealof education still is needed in this re-spect," he declares.. Where spraying equipment is involved, frequent flushing along with an occa-sional thorough cleaning and properwinterizing greatly extends its life. Itis recommended that this kind of equip-ment be traded in every five or sixyears and an annual depreciation of 20per cent is suggested in writing it off.

Hunter, incidentally, points out thattoo many courses don't have the ser-vices of a first-class mechanic and thatit probably costs them money. "Thesupt., or the person who is in chargeof repairs and maintenance of machinery, probably is a turfman at heart," he says, and considers this work to be of a

secondary nature. He's not quite asadept as a Class A mechanic and asa consequence, isn't capable of keeping
