CHAPTER -3
REQUIREMENT OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS
In this Chapter, the requirement of electrical and mechanical equipments has been
assessed for power generation stations, both hydro and thermal plants, as well as for
power substations. This requirement has been worked out corresponding to the tentative
capacity addition during the 11thand 12thlans.
!quipment for nuclear stations has not been considered as the same is separately
e"pected to be done by #uclear ower Corporation. $lso the requirement of equipments
and materials for nuclear plants is difficult to estimate which in any case is e"pected to be
%2&& '( and ))&& '( in the 11th and 12thlans respectively and therefore a smallfraction of the total tentative capacity addition.
3.1 REQUIREMENT OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS FOR GENERATIONPLANTS (INCLUDING SWITCHYARD EQUIPMENT)
The estimated requirement of electrical equipments for generation plants coming up
during the 11thlan and 12thlans has been worked out considering tentative capacity
addition identified for these lans, details of which have been furnished in Chapter 2.
Thermal pro*ects for commissioning during the 11thand 12thlan have been categori+ed
in five ma*or groups on the basis of their unit si+es. In case of thermal plants, requirement
of ma*or electrical equipment has been worked out for one unit of each of these categories
and subsequently depending on the number of units in the respective categories, the total
requirement has been assessed for 11th and 12th lans. In case of hydro units such
categorisation is not tenable since each pro*ect is site specific and therefore the total
requirement of ma*or equipments has been worked out for the 11th and 12th lan.

3.1.1 Therm! P"#er P!$%&(I$'!*$+ S#*%'h,r E*me$%)
The thermal plants have been categori+ed into five categories based on the unit si+ei.e. &/)&& '(, 0&& '(, %&&/20&/21& '( class and 120 '( for coal/lignite plants,
and gas/# modules. In case of as/# based power pro*ects, numbers of
modules3 comprising of 2Ts and 1 T4 corresponding to each pro*ect have been
assessed for 11th5 12thplans separately and as per the norms of equipment required for a
typical %& '( gas module, the total requirement of electrical equipment has been
assessed. The requirement of electrical equipments for switchyards at the generating
station has also been indicated.

:or hydro plants, requirement of equipment has been assessed corresponding to a
capacity addition of 1=,1)> '( during 11thlan and a capacity addition of about %&,&&&
'( during 12thlan. ince each hydro ;plant is site specificB there is no set rule or
norms for estimation.
The broad basis followed in the estimation of the other components of hydro
pro*ects for 11th5 12thlan is as under.
*) G%e& H"*&%& The number of radial gates roughly varies between % 5 1.
=**) S%%*' E>'*%%*"$ S,&%em 9ne set of !"citation !quipment with accessories isconsidered for each enerating 8nit.
=***) D,$m*' ?r:*$+ E*me$% -ynamic braking equipment is generallyprovided with large hydro generating units with high speed machines. The
number has been estimated accordingly.
*>) U$*% C"$%r"! ?"r (UC?) 9ne set of 8CA is considered with each generatingunit.

estimation is based on e"perience.

3.2 REQUIREMENT OF ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS FOR POWERSYSTEM
The requirement of electrical requirement for power system has been estimated
based on the transmission e"pansion plans corresponding to tentative capacity addition
during the 11thlan. In case of 12 thlan, the transmission e"pansion has been assumed tobe same as for the 11thlan.
The transmission e"pansion plans include the circuit length of transmission lines
at respective voltage levels and details of substation requirement for the entire
transmission system. Aased on the number of substations and the voltage levels at each
substation, the total number of bays at each voltage level has been estimated as shown
below in the table %.>.
