Introduction—Temperature and Heat

The measurement of the average kinetic energy of particles of a substance (o C)

Temperature--

Heat--The transfer of energy from particles of one substance to particles of another substanceQuestion #1: How is a particle’s

speed related to its temperature?

Push Arrow to Play!

Objective #1: GAME!! –By controlling the temperature and a gate, students will capture all of the gas atoms in only one chamber.

Specific Heat Experiment Directions:

– Place 50 ml of cool tap water into the calorimeter. Record temperature.

– Record temperature of sample from hot plate.– Insert sample into calorimeter. – After equilibrium, record final temperature of

water.

Supplies:1. Calorimeter (Cup and Lid)2. Thermometer3. 50 ml of cool tap water4. 2 Samples of Heated Metal

Heat Calculation for Water

Use the “heat calculator” spreadsheet to calculate the heat added to the water

User Inputs:– Mass of sample– Specific Heat of substance (a list of

substances is provided with the spreadsheet)– Temperature values

Program Outputs:– Heat added to water
