From 2001 – 2015, Dr. Amendola served as a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Kim and John Callaghan Endowed Chair in Sports Medicine at the University of Iowa. Dr. Amendola earned his medical degree, completed his orthopedic residency and returned on faculty at the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. This lectureship is particularly meaningful as Dr. Amendola played football during medical school at Western, while Dr. Kennedy was the team physician. He completed fellowships at the University Hospital Western Ontario; the University of Verona, Verona, Italy, the Crystal Clinic in Akron, Ohio and took part in the AOSSM European Sports Medicine Traveling Fellowship.

Throughout his career, Dr. Amendola has received numerous peer-reviewed grants, and published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles. He has won several AOSSM research

related awards, including the Excellence in Research Award, Cabaud Memorial Award and the O’Donohue Award. In addition, he received the Achilles Award from the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the Samson Award from the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, the Roger Mann Award and the Leonard Goldner Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), and the Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). After World War II, Dr. Kennedy took surgical training at the University of Western Ontario and obtained his FRCS(C) in general surgery. He then studied orthopaedics in Toronto under R. I. Harris. He obtained his FRCS(C) in orthopaedic surgery in 1950 and returned to London as an instructor in surgery. He eventually became a Clinical Professor and Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. DESCRIPTIONDespite continuous advances, musculoskeletal disorders and injuries are on the rise. While some areas require further research to improve outcomes, other areas have established best-practice patterns, but struggle with implementation. Orthopaedic surgeons are a critical part of the team leading the way to address these issues.

Education is key to improvements in musculoskeletal care. The AANA / AOSSM Specialty Day 2019 program will feature didactic presentations that provide opportunities to share important research findings and serve as a review of core musculoskeletal topics, highlighting the latest advances and reinforce time-tested tools aimed at preventing and addressing musculoskeletal care while providing face-to-face networking opportunities.

TARGET AUDIENCEThis program is designed for orthopaedic surgeons, physicians, and allied health professionals in the field of sports medicine or related fields of practice and who may desire to improve their arthroscopic knowledge, competence, performance, and patient outcomes.

PROGRAMThe Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) attest that the people responsible for the development of this educational activity did so independently and were not influenced by commercial supporters.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVESUpon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:• Implement an effective evaluation algorithm, based on recent

research, for musculoskeletal and medical sports medicine conditions through an arthroscopic surgery lens.

• Assess and apply surgical and non-surgical treatment recommendations and rehabilitation protocols for the diagnosis and clinical management of joint disorders in athletes.

• Review and implement new minimally invasive techniques for the management of shoulder, knee and hip pathology.
