Thirty-First Annual ReportOf the Council of the National Agricultural and Industrial

Association of Queensland.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,-

In presenting their Annual Report and Financial Statementfor the year 1906 your Council are pleased to be able to once morereport a highly progressive and successful year.

OPENING OF THE SHOW.On Wednesday, 8th August, the Show was officially opened by

His Excellency the Governor-General, Baron Northcote, escortedby a Guard of Honour from the Defence Force.

OFFICIAL LUNCHEON.The Official Luncheon was held in the Museum Gardens and

proved as usual a most enjoyable and successful function. HisHonour Sir Pope Cooper, C.J. (President), occupied the chair.Among the distinguished visitors on this occasion were His Excel-lency the Governor-General of Australia, Baron Northcote, attendedby the Hon T. T. Ewing, Vice-President of the Federal Executive('ouncil ; His Excellency Lord Chelmsford, Governor of Queensland ;Lady Chelmsford, Admiral Fawkes, Commander-in-Chief of theAustralian Squadron; the Premier and Members of the QueenslandMinistry.

GROUND IMPROVEMENTS DURING 1906.An important step was taken by the Council when they decided

to erect a new Grand Stand. It was considered most necessary inthe interests of the Members of the Association that proper accom-modation should be provided. The site selected has we think metwith general approval. Tenders were called for a substantial brickand iron structure, and that of Messrs. Walls and Juster wasaccepted. It was first intended to have erected a stand consisting

I of eight bays, but it was eventually decided to reduce the structureT by one bay, which, however, can be added when funds permit.

SThe total amount paid to the Contractors was £5,066 10s. 9d.,but the cost of foundations, filling up, furnishing, architect'scommission, salary to clerk of works, and sundries, increased thecost to £6,248 18s. 9d. To enable us to finance this large under-taking, it was found necessary, for the first time for the past sevenyears, to obtain an overdraft from our Bankers, the Bank of NorthSQueensland. £3,000 was readily granted to us by this institution, and the result of this large expenditure has we think met with generalapproval from our Members and the general public,

Page 5: SPECIALLY AUTHORISED SOCIETY Report the Council

The success of the past year's work has, however, enabled usto close the year with a debit balance of only £2,109, and we con-fidently .anticipate wiping off this amount during the next two years.Meantime it will be interesting to note that the revenue from thenew Grand Stand was £479'3s. Id., which exceeds an earning of

7o%.NEW GRAND STAND.

Three Commemoration Stones were laid on Monday, I Ith June,by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Chelmsford ; by Sir PopeCooper, C.J., President, and by the Chairman, Mr. John Macdonald, for and on behalf of the Council. The past and present Membersof the Council were invited to the ceremony.

DONATIONS TO THE CLOCK.It was hoped to cover the cost of the clock in the new Grand

Stand by means of subscription from the Life Members. Theresponse to the circular has so far resulted in donations fromSir Alfred Cowley, the late Mr. John Hardgrave, and Mr. D. Gunn.

Other Ground Improvements include :--Erection of Event Board, 25. x 20 ft.Telephonic communication with the Ring and Fat Cattle yards.Removal and Re-erection of Dressing Rooms and Lavatories.Removal of Caret&ker's Cottage.Dismantling of Old Bar and Refreshment Room on the hill.Erection of Fodder Shed.Erection of Weighbridge.Additional Cattle Stalls.Erection of Huyer's stand in fat cattle yards.Erection of structure for public dining rooms.Erection of Kitchen.New Bar on the hill.Asphalting of footpath at Ground Entrances.Planting of trees in the roadway between cattle stalls.Erection of additional miscellaneous horse stands.Removal of LIadies' Retiring Rooms.Machinery Entrance to Show Grounds from O'Connell Terrace.

TENURE OF THE GROUNDS.The Agreement of Lease for 14 years from 1st July, 1904, at

£10 per annum, between this Association and the AgriculturalDepartment has been completed. The insertion in the Lease ofthe Scale of Charges arranged with the Brisbane Cricket GroundTrustees, which your Council strenuously objected to has been modi-fied by the insertion of a clause reading " Provided that if the Trus-tees of tle Brisbane Cricket Ground at any time during the periodof the Lease shall have broken the Agreement with regard to thetariff, then the National Association will be absolved from adheringto the Schedule of the Lease,"

Page 6: SPECIALLY AUTHORISED SOCIETY Report the Council

DEPUTATION RE GROUNDS.Your Council waited on the Minister for Agriculture on Wed-

nesday, 24th October, and made a request that the Grounds shouldonce more be vested in the Trustees of our Association, or if not, that at the end of our Lease improvements should be valued andcompensation allowed to the Association.

The Minister promptly declined the request as to vesting theGrounds in the Association, more especially as the Lease had butrecently been arranged. With regard to the improvements he alsodeclined our application, but stated that it was unlikely the Assoc-iation would at any time be disturbed in their possession of theGrounds.

Your Council also waited on the Commissioner for Railwaysand arranged a lease of the Railway land on which a portion of thenew Grand Stand is erected, for a term concurrent with the Leasesecured from the Department of Agriculture, the rental charged bythe Railway Department being £10 per annum.

DISTRICT EXHIBITS, 1906.

The exhibits displayed by the various Districts proved themain feature of the 1906 Show, showing the resources and productsof Queensland in a wonderfully attractive manner. £400 PrizeMoney was offered in accordance with usual conditions. Entrieswere received from 5 Societies only, but your Council, notwithstand-ing Clause 13 of the Regulations, which reduces the Prize Moneyto £300 in the event of less than 7 competing, recognising the excel-lence of the exhibits, decided to pay the full amount of £400. Inaddition we paid, as usual, freight, and cartage amounting to £150,making a total expenditure involved by these competitions of £550.The number of points and prize money gained by each Districtare as follows :

Equal -1. Wide Bay and Burnett £86 1 3 362 points.do. 1. Moreton .. .. £86 1 3 362

3. Rockhampton .. £84 11 9 3564. West Moreton .. £76 19 6 3245. Logan .. .. £66 6 3 279

The judging of these exhibits involved a considerable amountof time and trouble, but in the hands of Mr. John Reid, as CouncilSteward, assisted by Messrs. R. W. Thurlow, Arthur Midson,W. H. Davis, H. Van de Velde, James Stodart, M.L.A., CharlesTaylor, W. J. Allen, R. S. Nevill, W. H. Barnes, M.L.A., as Judges, general satisfaction was obtained.

A trophy in the shape of a silver shield, valued at £250, to becalled the " Chelmsford Shield " is being offered this year by thePremier on behalf of the Government of Queensland. This trophywill be held by the winners for one year only.

FAT LAMBS FOR EXPORT.This competiti n, held for the second time, proved instructive

and of much value. Mr. J. Tyson Doneley, Brookstead, won bothprizes in Brisbane and London. Mr. Harry Baynes' judgment wasconfirmed.

The following report has been received from the Londonoffice of the New Zealand Loan and M.A. Coy., Ltd., under date30th November :-

" Prize Lambs ex ' Durham.' With reference to two smalllines Lambs on account of National Agricultural and In-dustrial Associatinm of Queensland, we have to report thatthe carccs 's came to hand in good condition, while thequality for Queensland was generally satisfactory, thoughin both cases the carcases, judged from a butcher's pointof view, carried too much fat in proportion to the lean, while some of the carcases showed distinct signs of themerino."

Page 9: SPECIALLY AUTHORISED SOCIETY Report the Council

" We arranged for the lambs to be inspected by three compe-tent judges, viz., a well known firm of meat salesmen, apractical butcher, and our own expert, and the awardwas given to the lighter weight carcases, averaging 39.2lbs., the Colonial expert's opinion being thus confirmed."

' As regards the general question of breed best suited to therequirements of this country, the Southdown is consideredthe most desirable cross with the merino, or with a previouscross of a shropshire and merino. The Shropshire breedis a large framed animal and heavy in comparison with theneat, compact, and fully developed Southdown. Wemerely mention this for your information, as of course, there may be special reasons for the Shropshire typeof sheep being utilised in Queensland."

EXHIBITS.

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry Department, Marine,Department, and Health Department each contributed materiallyto the success of the Show. The latter was a new and valuableexhibit under the direction of the Commissioner for Public Health,Dr. B. Burnett Ham.

The Industrial Sections exhibited, included Apiculture, Agri-culture, Dairy Produce, Wines, Fruits, Furniture, Machinery,Inventions, all of which proved considerably better than in previousyears, while the Schools, Fine Arts, Artisans, and Women's Workexhibits fully maintained their usual excellence.

STOCK PARADE.

One of the most admired features of last Show was the excellenceof the Stock, both Cattle and Horses, as shown in the parades heldon Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

SCHOOL ESSAYSThis competition was again eagerly competed for this year,

anl 57 essays were received, the subjects being :-

Girls and Boys under 12 years of age-" The value and usefulness of the Cob Corn Competition

with a description of the Maize plant."

Girls and Biys 12 to 15 years of age-" Describe the usefulness of five exhibits, viz., wheat,

barley, maize, sugar-cane and banana, as food for man andbeastj"

Girls and B >ys over .1 years of age-" The At.vantages of the Show from the standpoint of the

good resulting to geensland."

Page 10: SPECIALLY AUTHORISED SOCIETY Report the Council

YOUNG JUDGES COMPETITION.This proved a great advance on last year and the experience

gained from the last two Shows should greatly assist the Associationin their object, viz., education of young judges.

SHOW HELD AN EXTRA DAY THIS YEAR.This year the Show was extended over the Saturday, thus

allowing Friday as an extra day for the public. Saturday was madethe children's day and proved equally successful to previous years.

ARRANGING SHOW DATES.Numerous kindred Societies have consulted us with reference

to arranging the dates of their Shows, and it is hoped by degreesto preveAt clashing of dates.

GROUND EXTENSION.Our sincere thanks are due to the Council of the Queensland

Acclimatization Society for their kindness in allowing us the use ofthe unused grounds between the Railway Line and O'ConnellTerrace. It is fervently hoped some definite arrangement willsoon be made with the Acclimatization Society for the continueduse of the land mentioned above, 6 acres in area.

PUBLIC DINING ROOMS.The Council at considerable expense erected a large public

Dining Room and under capable management the public were cat-ered for in a satisfactory manner.
