curriculumGPLLM students must take the following six compulsory courses:

1. Law and Business in a Global Economy (Foundational Course) This course will explore the effects of the global economy on transactional, litigation and regulatory legal practice, and on businesses operating locally and internationally.

2. Comparative Corporate Governance Focused on Canada, U.S., U.K., and the European Union, this course will examine the role of the director, the BCE case, and the impact of common vs. civil law on corporate governance rules.

3. Securities Regulation and Corporate Finance Topics include the regulation of Canadian capital markets, equity and debt financings, public offerings, insider trading and enforcement issues, corporate restructuring, venture capital, and valuation.

4. Mergers and Acquisitions Learning through real cases and examples, the purpose of this course is to examine the principal legal issues and considerations involved in key M&A transactions for public and private corporations, including cross-border deals.

5. Canadian and Cross-Border Issues in Corporate Tax The central features of Canada’s corporate income taxation regime will be examined from a broader international taxation context. The objective is to familiarize students with the complex, multi-jurisdictional legal environment in which corporations that are active internationally operate.

6. Commercial Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Through practical exercises, the course focuses on understanding the structure of cross-border contracts with a view to understanding the techniques required in negotiating and drafting domestic and international contracts, and managing and avoiding commercial and economic disputes.

GPLLM students must also choose three weekend seminar courses from the following options*:

R International Insolvency Law

R Organization of Transactional Legal Practice

R Corporate Social Responsibility, Ethics and the Law

tuitionTuition for the 2011–12 GPLLM was $25,800 for a one-year course of study for domestic students.** This includes most program materials, meals and other fees. Tuition for 2012-13 has not yet been set, and may reflect a slight increase. For the latest information about the 2012-13 tuition, please visit the GPLLM website.

*Elective options may vary from year to year.

**Tuition and fees for international students was $37,350 in 2011-12.

The GPLLM does not qualify graduates to practice law in Canada.
