Delivering world-class public works for Australia

Public works play a vital role in strengthening the Australian economy, and provide essential facilities for individuals and communities.

Funded by tax-payers, public works are tightly regulated and must be implemented in the most efficient way possible - both technically and financially. They need to be inviting and usable, and must uphold the highest standards in terms of safety, sustainability and longevity.

From humble, rural beginnings, Lahey Constructions has grown to become one of Australia’s most prominent and long-standing construction firms. Lahey has been engaged to create a new, large-scale Creative Centre, as well as a public park at Green Square, in Sydney’s inner eastern suburbs.

Most importantly, the project involves transforming three heritage-listed buildings: giving them new life and purpose. These buildings include the former Esme Cahill building, a community shed, and a Green Infrastructure Centre. We are currently working on extending each building, and adding an outdoor room for the three-storey Creative Centre. We are also constructing an amenities building for the single storey community shed.

Alongside the Creative Centre, we are also developing a playground and several leisure zones, as well as making improvements to the building curtilages and entries, and along street frontages and areas within the site adjacent to the project site. Extensive services reticulation installation also forms part of the project.

> Public domain works for the Green Square administration building (adjacent to the Matron Ruby Grant Park) to ensure maximum accessibility.

> Development of a single, high voltage connection from new substation kiosks to the electricity grid, and a single low voltage electricity network from the substation kiosks to various council-owned buildings.

> Creation of a new, open space that will include a local scale playground, active play space, shared driveway and a permanent public artwork. The project will also deliver new trees, planting, lighting and site services.

> Total roof replacement for the heritage-listed Green Infrastructure Centre building, which involves replacing slate tiles and timber roof framing.

> Miscellaneous works such as hydraulic, electrical and fire services.

3 Mid North Coast Correctional Centre JHLC (JV)

Lahey has undertaken projects on a collaborative basis and within sensitive environments such as the Mid North Coast Correctional Facility (Kempsey) which was completed in collaboration with John Holland Constructions and in consultation with the Department of Commerce.

The $130 million project required complex, staged programming with substantial works being managed by Lahey including the processes between sub-consultants, subcontractors and the client. Extensive community consultation was undertaken prior to and throughout the projects construction phase to ensure the Community was regularly informed and any informal concerns were quickly addressed.

Now complete, the facility has the capacity to house up to 490 male and female inmates in medium and maximum security facilities.

The Warragamba Dam Visitor and Operations Centre in Haviland Park, overlooking Warragamba Dam, was re-opened to the public in 2009 after a period of closure. The building replaces previous facilities that were destroyed in the 2001 bushfires and accommodates operational staff who were previously spread across three separate buildings on the site.

The new centre includes operational offices, educational facilities and a visitor exhibition area. The building was designed to include ecologically sustainable principles and features viewing platforms that allow visitors the best views of the dam and lake. A key ecological feature was a computer-controlled natural ventilation system that responds to changing conditions outside and automatically opens windows and switches off air-conditioning as required.

> Digitally controlled ventilation system

> Floor to ceiling windows and skylights, to minimise the use of artificial lighting

> Water efficient taps

> 30,000 litre underwater rainwater tank that stores water for dual flush toilets

The New Toronto Police Station was Lahey’s first D&C Police Station project undertaken by PPG & BGIS. Lahey’s remit was to complete the detailed design based on an initial concept to all aspects of the proposed Toronto Police Station excluding the Custodial Area.

Prior to any works commencing onsite it was essential to relocate the NSWPF and staff to the nearby Boolaroo station as the existing Toronto Police station was demolished as part of the scope of works.

The first phase of works was the fitout of the nearby Boolaroo Station, which as mentioned above housed the Toronto Police Station staff during construction of the new station. Following the successful relocation of the Toronto staff into the refurbished Boolaroo Station, our team commenced the demolition of the old Toronto Police station whilst ground remediation works were being completed in parallel onsite.

The new Toronto Police Station is a single storey building that has approximately 1,944m2 of new facility space. This also includes a secure, covered external carpark area for 11 cars.

Following the completion of the substructure works, the main structure of the building consisted of load bearing block & brick walls which support Steel Roof Structure beams and truss system for the new metal roof system.

In addition to the external carpark area there were elements of hard and soft landscaping complemented by additional street parking for Police Vehicles.

> Design and construction of Toronto Police Station

> Relocation (decant and recant) of police operations and residencies across several Police Stations and accommodations across the Local Area Command region

> Provide temporary accommodation for Toronto staff during construction

> Secured parking and carports

> Coordinate and liaise with Caltex representatives with regard to the required remediation due to Hydrocarbon Contamination of the site.
