As Editor of Model Engineer author Martin Evans enjoyed the fullest opportunities of studying the growth of outdoor model railways in the post-war years. As steam has ceased to provide full-size transportation (except by the preservation societies) so have amateurs developed club, garden, and in many cases park, permanent tracks on which to operate their miniature locomotives and rolling stock.

Here for the fi rst time is assembled a truly remarkable collection of pictures of such activities, together with an expert text dealing with the construction, operation and development of such little railways.

As a practical engineer Martin Evans is well known throughout the world for his model steam locomotive designs, ranging from 3½in gauge through the still growing 5in gauge up to 7¼in gauge, probably the largest size that can be tackled by an amateur builders. These are the popular sizes for home and club operation and naturally occupy the greater part of this book.

At the two extremes will be found the smaller Gauge 1 and 2½in gauge which will just carry a full-size passenger or two... and even the still smaller 0 gauge, where it is something of a grand achievement to pull a passenger... up to the larger 'professional' 10¼in gauge and 15in gauge, seen in ducal parks and on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway - possibly the outstanding example of a miniature railway anywhere in the world!

Every aspect is covered expertly from siting and layout, track, foundations, bridges and tunnels, stations and station buildings, through to such things as signalling, rolling stock, passenger carrying and passenger cars and fi nally on to the important club angle of public liability.

We need hardly add that very nearly every one of the power units is live steam operated! So we offer this Martin Evans book confi dent that it gives happy hours of enjoyment and profi table study to the myriads of locomotive enthusiasts who still enjoy 'playing trains'.

MODEL STEAM LOCOMOTIVES by Henry GreenlyThis is a reprint of the eighth edition of this popular book, first published in 1922. Covering all gauges from Gauge 1 to 15” gauge, it remains one of the best books ever written on building model and miniature steam locomotives. Fully illustrated with drawings, tables and photographs. £16.95 (D)BUILDING ‘SPEEDY’ – A GWR 0-6-0 TANK IN 5" GAUGELBSC’s 5" gauge GWR 0‑6‑0T locomotive ‘Speedy’ was a design produced at the very height of his inventive powers in a period regarded by the experts as the ‘vintage’ years of LBSC. Literally hundreds of examples of this model have been and continue to be built. In spite of the passing of time and the introduction of rivals in the gauge and style, ‘Speedy’ remains a very popular model and even if you do not intend to build this particular design, this book is generally informative and worth reading. £7.95 (C)BUILDING SMALL STEAM LOCOMOTIVES A comprehensive guide to building small live steam locomotives for a garden railway, aimed at all modellers from beginners upwards. The author starts with an explanation of the technical terms, then introduces the basic metalworking techniques. The early designes he describes use a mixture of ready‑made components, kits and simple skills to enable you to produce your own working locomotives. Thereafter, further instructions, tips and hints are offered to provide the advice you will need to tackle more complex designs. Separate chapters cover machining, boilermaking and painting. Fully illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings, this is an invaluable work for the railway modeller. £25.00 (F)

VIRGINIA was produced in answer to requests that LBSC should design a real pioneer days type locomotive redolent of cowboys and Indians and the opening up of the West. His North American following should be well pleased with the result. We feel he has truly captured the spirit of those times which, combined with somewhat more modern techniques where these seem indicated, enable us to present the off ering in the utmost confi dence.

When we add that even the veriest beginner is guided easily through pitfalls even before they become apparent in the friendly down-to-earth way for which the author is world famous we can be certain that a great many more enthusiasts will be happily steaming in the not-too-distant future... MARTIN EVANSMartin Evans is perhaps better known as a designer of large gauge live steam model locomotives. But he has also had a great deal of experience in the building and running of the smaller scale electrically-driven models, and in fact was for several years engaged professionally in building 4mm and 7mm scale model locomotives. One of his best known models was the 7mm scale Beyer Garratt locomotive which he was commissioned to build for Rhodesia Railways, and which ran at Bulawayo Station during their Centenary Celebrations.

ROBERT STIRLING’S MODELS OF THE ‘AIR ENGINES’ by James G. RizzoIn this book well known authority on hot air engines James Rizzo describes, in detail, two working engines built, before 1825, by Robert Stirling inventor of the hot air engine

to demonstrate its principles. One engine was presented to the University of Edinburgh, and the other, slightly later, to the University of Glasgow. Both engines are now very fragile, but the author was granted unprecedented access to measure and inspect them by both Universities. From the resulting drawings James made half‑sized models of both engines, but whilst the building instructions refer to these models, the drawings are dimensioned full‑size, with metric and decimal inch measurements for accurate conversion. This book is an important and historic record of two unique survivors from the very earliest days of mechanisation, and a tramendous ‘projects’ book, providing the reader with full drawings and instructions to recreate these engines in either full‑size or model form. £12.95 (E)

STIRLING AND HOT AIR ENGINES by Roy Darlington & Keith StrongProvides an essential reference to engineers, teachers, students and hobbyists and aims to provide a thorough insight into designing and building Stirling and other hot air engines. Describes the design ethos and principles used and looks at the machining, workshop techniques and processes that go to build such engines. Roy Darlington is one of the world’s foremost authorities on small stirling engines and this book will keep any potential Stirling engineer fascinated for hours. £29.95 (F)BUILDING STIRLING ENGINES WITHOUT A LATHE by HoejfeldtBrowsing on the internet the author came across an idea for a Stirling engine which could be built without tools, developed the idea and built a running engine, followed by five other increasingly sophisticated machines all built using only ordinary hand tools, an electric soldering iron and a gas blow‑torch, from tin cans, wire coat hangers and parts from scrap computers, etc. £6.95 (C)AN INTRODUCTION TO STIRLING ENGINES ** by James R. SenftWritten by an acknowledged expert on hot air engines, this books covers how Stirling engines work, looks at old and new engines as well as unusual examples, the applications of Stirling engines and models. 80 pages. Paperback. £9.95 (B)THE EVOLUTION OF THE HEAT ENGINE ** by KolinWhilst covering the Stirling engine comprehensively, this book includes all sorts of heat engines — steam, i.c., rockets, guns, even the legendary Malone liquid engine. Throughout, the thermodynamic principles that underlie these devices are explained and illustrated by pressure‑volume diagrams, charts and calculations. 106 large landscape format pages. Spiral bound with card covers. £17.95 (E)RIDER-ERICSSON HOT AIR PUMPING ENGINE CATALOGUE (1906) £3.35 (B)AN INTRODUCTION TO LOW TEMPERATURE DIFFERENTIAL STIRLING ENGINES ** by J.R. SenftIn this excellent book Jim Senft takes you through the origin and development of LTD engines, their theory and operation and then includes drawings for his N‑92 engine and construction details. 88 pages, well illustrated. Paperback. £10.95 (C)HOT AIR CALORIC AND STIRLING ENGINES Vol. One by Robert SierA completely revised and expanded edition of ‘A History of Hot Air and Caloric Engines’. The result is a very detailed history of machines powered by hot air, mostly Stirling cycle, but including hot air balloons, and smoke jacks etc. 331 pages, well illustrated. Hardbound. £24.00 (F)MINIATURE RINGBOM ENGINES by J.R. SenftThis first ever book on miniature Ringbom engines is primarily a how‑to book, focused on presenting information and ideas for making working engines. Detailed plans and instructions for making three different model Ringbom engines are at the core. These include a tiny engine that runs at high speed on a small flame, and a larger Ringbom which can run for hours on the thermal energy in a few cups of hot water. The book starts with the basic theory behind all Ringboms, and finishes with an advanced engine design and a large collection of new engine ideas to explore. £14.95 (C)A PRACTICAL TREATISE ON HOT AIR ENGINES § by Edgar T Westbury With historical notes and diagrams, plus plans and construction details of several model hot air engines, this book is a must for the hot air enthusiast. £9.95 (B)

APPRENTICESHIP IN STEAM by Jack HampshireThe author was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, in 1898. During his childhood his father acquired ‑ almost by accident, as this book tells ‑ a steam engine and sawbench which led to the growth of a large haulage business employing steam traction engines

and steam wagons. The author, in spite of his youth, was actively associated with the early years of the family business and, on leaving school entered into an apprenticeship in steam engineering in order to provide his father with some expert assistance. His formal employment with the firm was interrupted by a spell in the Navy as a steam engineer from 1917 to 1919, but then he worked with his father and brother until 1922. This book recounts his early years as an apprentice in the family business. £10.95 (D)

I WORKED WITH TRACTION ENGINES by Jack HampshireThe late Jack Hampshire was one of the small number of men, alas all now departed, who really had worked with road steam. Jack was driving engines for the family company when barely in his teens, and was to work with steam all his life, latterly the marine variety. The book vividly illustrates what was like hauling and threshing with steam during the first 30 years of the twentieth century, and make for a tramendous read. 168 pages. £7.95 (D)STEAM WAGON MANUAL §First published in 1918, this useful book gives an insight into the commercial operation of any make of steam wagon. Jack Hampshire

JACK HAMPSHIRE, well known to steam enthusiasts all over the country, was born at Cowes, Isle of Wight, in 1898. During his childhood his father acquired - almost by accident, as this book tells - a steam engine and sawbench which led to the growth of a large haulage business employing steam traction engines and steam wagons.

The author, in spite of his youth, was actively associated with the early years of the family business and, on leaving school entered into an apprenticeship in steam engineering in order to provide his father with some expert assistance. His formal employment with the rm was interrupted by a spell in the Navy as a steam engineer from 1917 to 1919, but then he worked with his father and brother until 1922. He then had a year as an engineering representative with the Edison Steam Rolling Company before rejoining the family business until its closure in 1929.

He joined the Merchant Navy as a steam engineer in 1930 and on the outbreak of war in 1939 he was released to erect steam sawmills for the Home Grown Timber Commission and teach sawmill operation and work to prisoners-of-war. From 1943 to 1945 he served with the steam section of Operation Pluto, and with steam ships and marine steam engines from 1945 to 1965.

About this time he recovered a 1930 Foden Steam Wagon from a scrapyard in Ely. It was in an extremely dilapidated condition and for three years he worked on its restoration until nally steam was raised again in the old vehicle. Since that date Jack Hampshire and the Foden Wagon have become a familiar part of Steam Rallies in many parts of the country, and there is no doubt that the thousands of enthusiasts will welcome this book.
