The Fund Appeal Leadership Team has chosen then theme: Renewing God’s House for the capital appeal. The theme draws from 1 Peter 2:4-5: “Come to Jesus, a living stone…and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house.”

Pastor Knudson said, “The true bricks and mortar of this campaign are the people of God. We are the living stones that God uses to fashion a spiritual household. When we are joined to Jesus as our cornerstone, we are able to work together to accomplish more than we can alone. My hope is that our experience of a capital campaign will build up our community of faith and we will experience a renewal of passion and spirit for the church and God’s mission.”

Already important events have been identified. Members will receive information later on about each, but here is a brief overview.

Lois Buntz—Co-chair

Lois and her husband Bob have been members of First Lutheran Church for 24 years. They have both spent their careers in nonprofit organiza-tions. The past 12 years Lois has served as CEO of United Way of East Central Iowa. During that time she led annual, capital and endow-ment campaigns. Currently, she

is retired and consults on topics of fundraising and organi-zational management. Most recently she participated in the feasibility study for the capital appeal.

"The opportunity to be involved in this exciting project for First Lutheran is a great honor and privilege. I am looking forward to working with all of our members to fulfill the goals of the Renewing God's House Fund Appeal. Together, we can enhance our current ministry and expand our vibrant, caring community." remarked Lois.

Following the action by the congregation to move forward with a capital appeal, the council approved a core leadership team for the fund appeal. Drawing from across the congrega-tion, this core team of twelve people will invite others to join an array of teams to carry out the fund appeal. When the core leadership team met, each person talked about why they said “yes” to be a part of this appeal. There was excitement for re-newing the building as a place for vital worship and gathering. There was enthusiasm for coming together as a congregation to accomplish something important.

Fund Appeal Core Leadership Team: Lois Buntz and Chris DeWolf serve as co-chairs for the Fund Appeal for First Lutheran Church. They will lead the core

leadership team that includes Jenny Bosking, Judy Cheney, Mark Fersdahl, Jana Grimm, Patti Groff, Doug Johnson, Bob Koenig, John Swenson, and Tom Wolle. Pastor Craig and Pastor Steve, along with Tim Box, Directior of Support Ser-vices will work with the core team, as well as the whole staff.

One hundred people will be recruited to make Renewing God’s House a success. This is a whole congregation effort.

Already the core team has reached out to expand the leader-ship of work teams for prayer, communication, invitation, and special events that will bring about success. We will continue to build teams in the coming weeks.

Introducing the Fund Appeal Leadership Team

Chris DeWolf—Co-chair

Chris & Suzy DeWolf were married at First Lutheran Church in 1995 and now have three teenage children. They are principal owners of Lil’ Drug Store Products. Chris has ex-tensive experience supporting com-munity appeals. He provided fund-raising leadership for the Four Oaks’ Total Child Campaign and for the

construction of the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Additionally, Chris worked closely with Lois Buntz, our other co-chair, on past United Way annual campaigns.

Chris said about the Renewing God’s House Fund Appeal: “First Lutheran Church has played a vital role in our family’s life, serving as the place of worship and community for our parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and our children. I am honored to lend my skills and experiences to help ensure that the legacy of First Lutheran Church will continue for gen-erations to come.”

New Monthly ServiceBeginning this Sunday, March 26 the 11:15 a.m. service will gather together once a month for contemplative service based on Holden Village’s Prayer Around the Cross. This service is a quiet service which includes scripture readings, prayers, silence, and an opportunity to kneel or sit up front near the font/table/cross, light a candle, and pray. Short songs and re-frains are sung repeatedly as the gathered community medi-tates on a simple phrase that serves to focus and facilitate prayer. We hope you find this service a welcome change from the ordinary, and a respite for your soul.

The Light of First Lutheran 3

I am excited about the vision for the capital campaign and the leadership team that is being gathered for this important work. There is great enthusiasm in the congregation and the core leadership

team, and we are ready to move forward. In that spirit, I want to share some affirmations why I think this building project is critically important for us so that we may stay strong and vital as a congregation.

† When we take care of the building, we affirm our commitment to be a place of mission in the heart of the city. We are here to make a difference.

† The work on sanctuary and organ goes to the heart of our mission by maintaining the strength of worship. First Lutheran is one of few congregations to offer great traditional worship. Traditional worship sets us apart, as well as our ability to offer a vibrant contemporary worship.

† The priority of sanctuary and organ is something that is needed to maintain strength in worship for the sake of all the ministries. It is about worship, but it is about a whole lot more, because when worship is strong, we then have the resources to do all the other minis-tries we count as important. We are in this together.

† This church is about the present and the future. It is what we need to do now to continue to be the church we hold dear. I believe it is important to do things well, so that we don’t have to do them again. Because prior generations built a solid building, there is much we don’t have to do. Now it is our turn to leave a legacy of quality that will last.

† Over the course of two years, so many people have been involved planning this project through cottage meetings, surveys, and then the feasibility study. I believe a 95% yes vote at the annual meeting says we are ready to move forward.

† We are renewing the foundation stones of worship and building for the sake of the whole work of the church. What we do with the building and sanctuary lays foundation to support all the mission and ministry we do in the heart of the city.

I invite you to join with me in praying about the future of First Lutheran. Renewing God’s House can become a reality through everyone participating. I encourage you to prayerfully consider how you will support and play a role in Renewing God’s House.

Upcoming Youth Series:All AccessHave you ever been to a concert? Maybe you had tickets for great seats. Maybe you were in the nosebleeds. Either way, you probably noticed that everyone had the same goal in mind, to get as close as possible. No matter how good your tickets are, you can only get so close.

Maybe you’ve felt the same way when it comes to God. Sure, you come to church and sing songs or listen, but there’s a limit to how close you can get. But what if that’s never what God intended? In this series we’ll explore what the Resurrection of Jesus really meant—for real people like us. And, we’ll discover that, because of Easter, we have an all-access pass to Him and to the life He has for us.

Calling all Graduating Seniors! First Lutheran would like to celebrate and send you off with a special blessing!

Have you heard about the ennea-gram but didn’t know what it was? Would you like to find out? Beginning the week of April 24, Renovaré groups will use Ian Morgan Cron (author of Chasing Francis) and Suzanne Stabile’s new book, The Road Back to You, an En-neagram Journey to Self-discovery, to get to know ourselves and God better.

The authors tell us that “what you don’t know about yourself can hurt you—and your relation-ships, and how you make your way in the world. It can also keep you in the shallows with God.”

If you would like help figuring out who you are vand why you repeatedly stumble into the same self-defeating patterns, consider the ancient spirituality type system called the Enneagram. This unique, narrative-based approach allows us to see and experience the world through the eyes of people who represent each of the nine Enneagram spirituality types. This study is funny and full of stories and will keep you turning the pages long after you read each week’s assigned reading. When we come together, we’ll talk about what we’ve read, consider if we resonate with the week’s Type, and hear what others appreciate about that Type or what drives them crazy! It’s a light-hearted, open-minded approach to self-awareness that has led millions to new understandings to how God made them and to new life. Consider joining a group for this 5-week study.

Groups begin the week of April 24:Mondays at 9:30 a.m.in the Youth Room(Young moms group—childcare provided)

Prayer Shawl Gatheringis on a Wednesday! — April 26, 9 to 11 a.m.

The First Lutheran Church Prayer Shawl Ministry was created in March 2004 as a way to bring a healing presence to people in need of support and comfort as well as to be a blessing in times of celebration and joy.

Each shawl is begun with prayers and blessings for the re-cipient. Intentions are continued throughout its creation and the finished shawls are prayed over and blessed prior to being given. Inside each shawl is sewn a label that reminds the re-cipient that this shawl comes from the First Lutheran Church Prayer Shawl Ministry.

To date, this loosely-formed group called the Prayer Shawl Ministry has donated almost 600 shawls to the sick, to care-givers, and as a comfort to those who have experienced a significant loss. In addition, shawls have been given to those individuals in recovery, suffering a tragedy, entering a new ministry, and as a blessing for Stephen Ministers.

Whether you’ve been knitting prayer shawls for years or wanted to but didn’t know where to begin, please join us Wednesday, April 26th from 9 to 11 a.m. in Room 312 to learn the basics, receive help and inspiration from some “old pros” or simply visit with friends as you knit. If you’re new to knit-ting, donated yarn and needles will be available if you’d like to try it before you invest. OR, if you’re ready to jump in, please bring 3 skeins of Homespun yarn and size 11 knitting needles to create your prayer shawl. Yummy snacks will be provided. All are welcome.

On Palm Sunday we decorate the chancel with palm plants as a symbol of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. On Easter Sunday, flowering plants are added to the chancel as a refreshing reminder of the new life given to us through Jesus’ resurrection.

Donations given for palms are used for the rental of these plants. Donations given for flowering plants will be pooled together to purchase a large variety of flowers, which vary in cost. If you desire to take home a plant after the 11:15 a.m. Easter service, we ask that you indicate this on the bottom of the form. Any gifts given beyond the cost of plants will be given to Helping Hands Ministries, who provide financial assistance to people in need within our community.

Your dedications (in memorial, celebration of an occasion, anniversary, etc.) will be printed in the Easter bulletins. Please use the form below to make your dedication and include

your money when you turn in the form to the information desk or church office.
