How?! One day, I decided to launch a Youth Orchestra. After working
with Burbank High School director Mike Stanley & JBHS Band
Director Taylor Arakelian, the Summer Symphony was born.
Both directors offered old library music, and their band rooms for
practice space. I reached out to the IMA kids at BHS and JBHS
and created a 55 piece Symphony Orchestra.
On August 2nd, 2015, The Burbank Summer Symphony premiered
with a fantastic performance of Rhapsody in Blue, featuring pianist
Kurt Jordan.
After a short break, the Summer Symphony evolved into the
Winter Symphony. And the Season of Symphonies would very
quickly be confusing, right? So Burbank Young Musicians (BYM)
was born!
I borrowed Winter Symphony members and started visiting Luther
Burbank Middle School (Thank you Cathy Kim). Our intention
was to help them with their music. Turns out they’re super pro!
Which led to the birth of the BYM Concert band. They performed
alongside the Winter Symphony Orchestra on December 20, 2015
at our BYM Holiday Concert.
I knew I needed more members if I wanted to put together a
marching band, so I pitched at Muir (thank you Suzie Snell). In
February, we started marching basics with the hopes of bringing
these two schools together for Burbank on Parade. Well, on April
23, 2016, we did exactly that.
Thanks to the strings program at John Muir Middle School, we
proudly welcome our newest addition, the BYM String Orchestra.
We hope you enjoy the BYM Spring Pops.
