About the Science Talent SearchThe first Science Talent Search was conducted and sponsored by the Science Teachers’ Association of Victoria Inc., in 1952. The then Secretary, Mr Hugh McKnight, invited students from all secondary schools to submit a 1000 word report titled ‘My Science Project’.

A special judging panel of prominent Scientists interviewed the entrants and awarded 17 bursaries, totalling £380.00 ($760.00). There were two major bursaries of £100.00 ($200.00) and £60.00 ($120.00) respectively, five intermediate bursaries of £25.00 ($50.00) each with ten other awards, seven worth £10.00 ($20.00) and three worth £5.00 ($10.00).

Over the past 66 years, the Science Talent Search has undergone much change. Currently, there are ten Sections in which students can enter: Computer Programs, Games, Science Photography, Posters - Scientific Wall Charts, Working Models, Inventions, Experimental Research, Creative Writing, Video Productions and Class Experimental Research Project for primary students.

The Search is open to all students enrolled in Years Foundation to 12 in both Government and non-Government Schools.

The Science Talent Search has three broad aims:1. To stimulate an ongoing interest in the serious

study of Sciences by:

a) encouraging independent self-motivated project work amongst students of science;

b) giving students the opportunity to communicate their achievements to a wider audience;

c) according recognition of effort and achievement for their scientific enterprise.

2. To promote the direct involvement of the students in the process of science and its communication.

3. To give the public at large an opportunity to see the quality of work being achieved in Science, by both primary and secondary students.

‘In a world where it is so easy to neglect, deny, corrupt and suppress the truth, the scientist may find his discipline severe. For him, truth is so seldom the sudden light that shows new order and beauty; more often, truth is the uncharted rock that sinks his ship in the dark. He respects all the more those who can accept that condition; and in returning thanks tonight we are saluting all those who make our load lighter by sharing it’John Warcup Cornforth, Nobel Prize Banquet speech, December 10, 1975

John Warcup Cornforth (1975)Professor John Warcup Cornforth (1917-2013) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1975 whilst at the University of Sussex for his work on the stereochemistry of enzyme-catalyzed reactions. He shared the prize with Swiss Professor Vladimir Prelog, for his research into the stereochemistry. While they did not work together, the commonalities of their research led to international recognition.Cornforth investigated the role of enzymes, the biological catalysts that control important chemical reactions, by detailing how they construct the essential precursor for cholesterol, squalene, in the cell. His focus was on how the shape of a molecule, or its stereochemistry, is created, and how this affects its behavior. Conforth could track which choice the enzyme makes at each stage to create the correct product.

In Memory of Dr Noel Schleiger(1926 – 2013)A Proud Sponsor of the 66th Science Talent Search Dr Noel Schleiger was a teacher of maths at TAFE level, and a highly active member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria (FNCV) between 1984 and 2013. His primary interest in natural history was geology; he actively led many excursions, wrote articles and gave talks on his area of expertise. Noel was also the author of Roadside geology (1995), which was published jointly by FNCV and the Geological Society of Australia (Victorian Division). Noel was a great support for science education over his career, which included his involvement in the ‘Scientists in Schools’ program. He leaves a legacy that we hope will inspire a future generation of scientists.

Computer Programs (Games and Simulations)STS Section Coordinators: Blair Odom & Joseph GhalyJudging Day 2017 was an opportunity for many excited students to bring their entries before an official Science Talent Search Judge in order to explain the processes they went through to create their entry for the competition. There were numerous submissions, covering a nice selection of software and science topics, as well as the entire range of divisions — from Lower Primary right up through to the Open Division. The judges thoroughly enjoyed meeting with the students. They had the challenging task of assessing each project against the criteria of the competition in order to determine bursary winners. In the end, we were able to celebrate each student’s entry and celebrate individual successes, while identifying a number of entries as being worthy of high praise.Judges noted with enthusiasm that many of the entries had a high level of sophistication in both computer programming skills and scientific understanding. Given that this competition is, above all else, a science competition, it was pleasing to see that students endeavoured to become experts in an area of scientific focus, rather than merely concentrating on creating a computer program. Well done to these students in particular. Thanks to MLC for providing a friendly and well suited venue, to Janice at STS for her excellent organisation, to the team of volunteer judges for their illustrious assistance and to the students for furthering the cause and path of science.

Picture Story Books (Creative Writing) – Lower Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary divisionsSTS Section Coordinators: Leonie Lang and Judith Sise Like Judith, who has coordinated this section for many years, I have been amazed at the inventiveness of primary students’ Science Talent Search entries in the creative writing section. This year’s topic of FUTURE EARTH involved issues that really interested and concerned primary students. Sustainability, with an emphasis on recycling and water and energy conservation was a major theme, especially in the lower and middle sections. “It’s the little things...” was a popular topic, closely followed by “Congratulations, you’ve saved the earth”. The little things done by children and families to conserve or re-cycle can save the earth for the future. Upper primary students were also interested in future discoveries in science and medicine. “It is spreading...” was popular at this level. There were some wonderful science fiction stories predicting cures for diseases and technological advances.Students generally followed the criteria and it is pleasing that this year there were fewer students laminating their entries and using thick paper or cardboard for their stories. The use of spiral bound booklets and thick, cardboard folders has made for weighty and awkward packing problems, creating a costly postage bill. The entries are mailed to judges across

the city and country Victoria and as the postage charges rise yearly, the price of sending entries is considerable. Further, schools must pay for the postal return of the entries. So teachers, it is in your school’s interests to urge students to follow the criteria. If students complied with the criteria of “flat, A4 sheets of paper in manila folders” this money could be used for more bursaries rather than postage.This brings me to the wonderful team of judges who receive entries in mid July with a note to complete judging within the next fourteen days and they DO – well, with the exception of one or two who haven’t full Australia Post’s co-operation. Well done judges for a magnificent job and for always commenting positively on the creativity of the stories and the enjoyment of reading students’ entries. Thanks also to the science and classroom teachers for their continued support for this section of Science Talent Search. Also a big thank you to the many parents and grandparents who inspire and assist students to think, to research and to produce picture stories highlighting science. Congratulations to all students who took the challenge of creating such delightful picture story books in 2017. This year, Judith was away at a crucial time for the competition so I had the delightful job of collating the judged entries. As I said, the creativity shown by the students was amazing.

Creative Writing - Junior DivisionSection Coordinators: Rachel Johnson and Raquella NeigerStudents are well aware of the importance of tackling the challenge of sustainable urban and agricultural development. Whilst reading the Junior Creative writing entries it was evident that many entries acknowledged the various approaches to address some of humanity’s most complex problems, such as climate change, sustainability food security and water supply.The entrants’ responses to the theme Future Earth were of a very high standard and selecting the winners of the major bursaries and minor bursaries was a very difficult task. Many of the stories highlighted the importance of sustainability and about how you can use technology to address world wide issues. The judges were also impressed by the initiative and imagination shown by students in the quest to explore strategies to address future climate isssues. Many students showed evidence of detailed research, with a range of resources quoted in the bibliography, rather than relying just on the Internet. The essays of the bursary winners were those which incorporated good science into an imaginative and entertaining story line. Most students managed to follow the essential guidelines, such as keeping to the word limit, giving a word count, including a suitable bibliography and writing a sound appendix of scientific ideas. Teachers are urged to carefully check their students’ essays for relevance before they are submitted.

Congratulations to all who participated in 2017. The judges made many positive comments about your work. I would especially like to thank the judges for their careful assessments, thoughtful comments and co-operation in keeping to the timelines.

Creative Writing – Intermediate ReportSection Coordinator: Lynden FieldingIn 2017, seventy-seven Intermediate Creative Writing entries from twenty-five schools were assessed by a team of eleven judges. In comparison to 2016, this was a thirty-five percent increase in the number of entries received. Fifteen entries were not received. The overall standard of Intermediate Creative Writing entries was again consistently high in 2017 and judging has continued to be very competitive. There were four allowed topics. The Global Coalition of Traders topic did not attract any entries. The 2050 Nobel Prize goes to … topic attracted six entries, and It’s the little things … topic attracted seventeen entries. The Second Earth – Our Future topic was selected by the overwhelming majority of entrants. Eight Major bursaries of $55 and twenty Minor bursaries of $45 were awarded. This represents an increase from the previous year of twenty-two per cent in the total number of bursaries awarded, with a fourteen per cent increase in the value of the total award amount, thanks to the generosity of sponsors and donors. Eighteen entries gained the new Distinction certificate. The standard of entries was such that all other entries were awarded a Merit Certificate, with hardly an exception.In this year of the Future Earth theme, key judging criteria discriminators for the award of a Major bursary were the integration of science ideas into writing, the amount of scientific content included in the writing, and originality and creativity. It is important that students gain a thorough understanding of the section Guidelines page in the STS Handbook prior to commencing their writing project. The additional page on How to cite references and write a bibliography will alert entrants to the requirement to list both the date and time that they access websites. If students have this in mind from the commencement of their entry, then they should be able to fulfil this formatting and authentication requirement.When the student’s Entry Name is not holus bolus one of the topics for the year, it is important that the student identify their chosen topic at the beginning of their creative writing piece. All creative writing must be on one of the topics, and each entrant needs to ensure that which of the four allowed topics they are writing about is clear to judges. In 2017, there were a small number of entries that did not include science relevant to any of the Future Earth topics.Major and Minor bursary winning entries consistently gained nearly full scores for Presentation. One judging criteria discriminator was whether or not the entry Appendix included at least five key science ideas, and a two to three sentence explanation of them; others were spelling, grammar and word length, and a satisfactory conclusion. Entrants can ensure

that the section coordinator and judges are able to do their task smoothly by stapling their entry as A4 sheets in a manila folder with the Face Sheet attached to the front cover of the folder. However, in 2017, there were still a minority of entries received that did not adhere to this requirement. Importantly, students can use the Entry guidelines as a self-assessment checklist prior to submitting their entry.Well done to all the 2017 Years 9 and 10 authors on their creative writing achievement and congratulations to all who achieved bursary and certificate awards. The judging team from nine schools across Victoria did a sterling job of evaluating the entries using the judging criteria for Scientific Content and Presentation, and writing comments for each entrant. We are most appreciative of their volunteer time and expertise, and careful judging. Thank you to all the learning area directors and coordinators, and Science teachers across the schools for their valuable support and encouragement. We are also grateful for the involvement of parents and other mentors, which is invaluable.

Working Models and Inventions – All divisionsSection Coordinators: Janice Teng, Maureen Frith, Manju Mohandoss and Gregary BoylesThe Working Models category is an exciting and valuable section which inspires students to explore a scientific principle or idea that they find interesting. Individually with research or support, students translate their concept to a design and construction of a working model to demonstrate a particular scientific theory and/or principle. Students also have a chance to recreate a scaled model of an existing invention and explain the science behind their project.The Inventions category encourages students to explore their creativity in designing and constructing either their own original scientific invention to solve a problem, or making an innovation and/or improving on an existing scientific invention for new or existing devices. It is important that students explore their design and redesign in the development of their invention using different scientific solutions. Inventions must be an original concept, and students should research that their innovation has not been previously explored.In addition, we would like to encourage students to include more diagrams of their model/invention for their design brief in the report. Students should explain how their device has changed as they were building and developing it, with several diagrams of their prototypes. Diagrams should be labelled describing how the science applies to their device. Sample report formats are available online if required.Students interested in the Inventions section may want to explore the resource links in ‘The New Inventors’ ABC website. This year, our Inventions Major and Minor bursary winners are also eligible for entry in the BHP Billiton Foundation Science and Engineering Awards, in the Engineering category. Girls interested in the inventions category should look out for information on the STS website February or March of 2018 for a special workshop.

Many students are inspired by the year’s theme, but we would like to remind students that in Working Models and Inventions, they do not have to be limited to the theme and can be creative as well as pursuing their own interests in any aspect of Science!2017 entries included a diverse range of projects, such as the ‘Fully Autonomous UAV with Robotic Arm Application’; ‘Eco Bicycle’; ‘Brushless Motor Generator’; ‘Smart Lock’; ‘Tablet Sorter’; ‘Automatic Composter’ and a ‘Hand Heat Powered Torch’. In addition, we saw several sustainability entries and some working models such as ‘Tesla Coil’; ‘The Moving Earth’; ‘Richelle’s Light Worx’; ‘Micro-sensors In The Future’ and ‘Invisible Force’.Students are reminded that if they are re-entering a project that has been developed since the previous year, they must clearly show in their model/device and report all the new modifications and/or improvements made from their previous entry.Congratulations to all the bursary winners of the Working Models and Inventions. This year there were 19 Major bursaries and 36 Minor bursaries awarded in the Working Models section, and, 10 Major bursaries and 8 Minor bursaries awarded in the Inventions section.We would also like to commend all entrants into the Working Models and Inventions as we appreciate the amount of effort and persistence required to achieve a working device from their design.We would like to thank, Methodist Ladies’ College for hosting our Judging Day, and Sara White, Miriam Beasy and all the staff and students who were essential in the set up and running of the day. Our appreciation and thanks also go to all the judges who provided time and expertise to listen and speak to our student entrants, giving them valuable feedback and a richly rewarding experience.

Posters-Scientific Wallcharts – Lower Primary, Middle Primary and Upper Primary divisionsSection Coordinator: Ann PisarevskyCongratulations to all those students who made the effort to compete in the poster section of Science Talent Search.This year 267 posters were entered with 94 from Upper Primary, 111 from Middle Primary and 62 from Lower Primary. Of those students who entered the Lower Primary section 6 received a Major bursary and 12 received a Minor bursary. In the Middle Primary section 11 students received a Major bursary and 22 received a Minor. As for Upper Primary, 9 students received a Major bursary and 18 received a Minor. Students were asked to address one of the topics given – either Conserve or exploit?, Building healthy and productive cities, Water, energy and food to all, or Future Earth - Climate solutions.The judges felt that most posters were well set out and presented a good understanding of the scientific content relating to the topic. However, there were a number of posters that did not comply with the guidelines. In some cases fabric or photographs were attached to the poster. It specifically states in the guidelines that only original diagrams are to be used and if using references from web sites time and date must be included in the reference.Students should note, that as Posters-Scientific Wallcharts are usually found attached to the wall what is written on the back is not judged. On the other hand students and teachers should make sure that entry details on the back of the poster are complete.On judging day the judges were impressed by the enthusiasm of the students and their understanding of the concepts presented on their posters. Many thanks to those who gave up their whole Saturday morning to be involved in the judging.

Posters-Scientific Wallcharts – Junior and Intermediate DivisionsSection Coordinator: Diana VeremciukasThe judging Day on Saturday the 5th of August succeeded due to the tireless efforts of 54 volunteer judges made up of primary, secondary and trainee teachers who worked from 8.00am to 1.00pm non-stop.A big thank you to Methodist Ladies’ College for the use of their facilities and to the ground staff who helped set up the rooms and provided lift keys on the preceding Friday evening. Also thank you to the staff/parents that provided morning tea in the waiting area on Saturday and the MLC senior students who were on the Registration desk, and to the security guard who provided trolleys so that 450+ posters could be ferried down to cars using the lift. Also thank you to Ms Judith Sise for her extra help in sorting posters and loading up the cars.

STS Coordinator ReportsExperimental Research – IntermediateSection Co-ordinators: Susan Tawia and Miranda McKellarEach year we wait with anticipation to see the entries in the Intermediate Experimental Research section of the Science Talent Search. Students who enter this section are in Years 9 and 10 and It was clear this year that many students thrived when given the opportunity to work on a project that inspired them. There were forty-eight entries this year and many were of an excellent standard, which made the section very competitive. Six Major bursaries and twelve Minor bursaries were awarded. This year a new category was introduced: Distinction. This category enabled us to acknowledge the high-quality entries that just missed out on bursaries. Fifteen Distinction Cretificates were awarded in 2017.Pleasingly, girls and girls’ schools were very well represented in this section this year, with many being awarded bursaries.Some of the topics of investigation that were awarded bursaries included:• The sound of silence• Hot, warm or cold brewed Australian teas - are they

antibacterial agents?• Which fruits ruin your gelatin dessert?• Can a natural additive be added to wool when rinsed to

make it more comfortable?• Font-tastic!• Do liquid laundry detergents perform better than

powdered?Not only did these entries involve creativity to come up with an original idea to investigate, but also the discipline required to undertake a controlled experiment and document the process in detail. Undertaking research projects and then presenting them as a report parallels exactly what scientists do in the ‘real world’. All of the students who managed to undertake this process and produce an entry for the Science Talent Search, which satisfied the requirements of both originality and scientific rigour deserve congratulations.The Science Talent Search aims to stimulate an ongoing interest in the study of sciences by encouraging independent, self-motivated project work amongst students of Science.An entry in the Intermediate Experimental research section of the Science Talent Search satisfies the requirement of the Science Inquiry Skills strand of the Australian Curriculum for Years 9 and 10. The Australian Curriculum: Science has three interrelated strands: Science Understanding; Science as a Human Endeavour; and Science Inquiry Skills. Together, the three strands of the science curriculum provide students with understanding, knowledge and skills through which they can develop a scientific view of the world. Providing students an opportunity to enter the Experimental Research (Intermediate) section of Science Talent Search gives them an opportunity to conduct authentic research, with unknown outcomes, rather than replicating an experiment from a science textbook.

Another thank you goes to the parents and entrants who stood patiently in long queues waiting to register and to those parents who waited downstairs uncomplaining for over an hour for their children to be judged. A reminder to parents that judging times are 8.30am to 10.30am for primary students and 10.00am to 12.30pm for secondary students. Due to the congestion, it would be helpful if only one parent accompanied their child to the venue.The number of Junior entries received were one hundred and sixty, up on last year’s total. Of the entries submitted 20 won Major bursaries, 36 won Minor bursaries, 47 entries received a Distinction certificate and 41 received a Merit certificate.Thirty-three Intermediate entries were received, up on last year’s total. Of the entries submitted 5 won Major bursaries, 10 won Minor bursaries, 8 entries received Distinction certificates and 10 received a Merit certificate.The favourite topic for entrants was “Farming for the Future” at 28%. Next popular was “Building healthy and productive Cities” at 26%, closely followed by “Vegetarian- the way to go?” at 25%. Least favourite was “Conserve or exploit” at 21%.Some interesting projects covered by “Farming for the Future” topic involved: Bee farming, Aeroponics, Hydroponics, Vertical farming, Aquaponics, Algae farms, Drones, Robots and farmbots, Farming on Mars, Genetically modified crops and Urban farming.Posters based on “Building healthy and productive cities” included ideas on: Thorium power, Recycling, Air quality control, Reducing pollution, Renewable energy and Fuel, Reducing Carbon emission, Perpetual energy, Jenius project, Flash distillation, Reverse Osmosis, LED’s, Smart lighting and Future transport.Some interesting projects covered by “Conserve or exploit?” and “Vegetarian – the way to go?” topics involved: Global warming, Rising sea levels, Climate change, Water conservation, Coal versus Coral, Bushland versus Population growth, Ocean pollution by human waste, Mining, Deforestation, Nuclear fusion, Dark matter and energy, Food wastage, Animal welfare, Animal testing, More carrots, less carbon, Aquatic biomes, Vegetarian trophic levels, Antibiotic resistance and Cloning dead species.Students are reminded that diagrams must be hand or computer drawn - do not glue photos, cut-out pictures or samples of matter like water, soil or plants to posters. Diagrams should be referred to in your written information on the poster. Some students are still not fully laminating their posters when they have attachments, which leads to damage to the poster on cartage/storage. Remember when accessing the internet to include site dates and times in the bibliography.Congratulations to all students who entered. Judges thought that most posters were of a high standard as indicated by the number of Major and Minor bursaries, and Distinction and Merit Certificates awarded. We are already keen to see the research displayed in posters for next year’s topics.

It has been a pleasure coordinating the Intermediate Experimental Research section and having the opportunity to work with our valued judges to discover the many students with talent, creativity, and scientific inquiry skills. We would like to thank the judges for their work and commitment to the Science Talent Search. We also recognise and thank the teachers, school laboratory technicians and mentors who supported the students and, finally, the students who accepted the challenge. It instils confidence that Science in Australia has a positive future.

Experimental Research – Open divisionSection Coordinator: Tassie EleftheriouWhat a great year it was for Open Experimental Research. First of all, a big thanks is needed for all the students that submitted entries into the category. It’s no simple task to plan, conduct and report on any scientific experiment – let alone on top of all their other school commitments. This is made even more impressive when you observe the overall quality of the work, some of which could easily be found in a university laboratory report. A huge congratulations to our Major bursary winners Thanushi Peiris (Methodist Ladies’ College), Josephine Owen (Tintern Grammar) and Cassandra Dods (Tintern Grammar). They each completed fantastic reports and it was obvious that they put in many hours of effort to do so. It was a difficult decision to separate some of the Minor bursary winners from the Major bursary award so they too must be acknowledged for their time and diligence.For those wishing to enter again next year, it’ll be a good idea to look over your report and match it with the provided criteria. Make sure that you have fulfilled all of the requirements before submitting your final copy. Also, be sure to be succinct, especially in the abstract. Finally, thank you to all the judges that put aside time from their busy schedules to mark and provide feedback to these aspiring students. They are: Marta Cassidy, Adam Bylsma, Robert Bell, Kathleen Reynolds, Janice Youl, Caitlin Vine and Lisa Newton. The feedback is very much appreciated and helpful in developing the next generation of scientists.

Experimental Research – JuniorSection Coordinators: Asher Longney and Chris Rogerson As first time section coordinators and members of the STS Committee this year, Asher and I had no previous experiences of the quality of research from Year 7 and 8 students in a state-wide sample. Of course we have monitored our own students and judged the section before, but it was a real privilege to see the creativity and effort from students in experimental research. Biology experiments were popular, with investigations of mealworms, water temperature and plant growth, plant fertilizers, pollen filters and the powers of garlic, to name just a few. Physics was represented with investigations of viscosity, centripetal force, gravity, flights of soccer balls, basketball bounce height and how clouds form. Chemistry was resplendent in topics about icebergs, pH of seawater, chemical energy of foods and many more. It was good to see Psychology investigations in multitasking and the best methods of learning represented, too. The addition of the Distinction category allowed those entries that were better than Merit Certificate, but not in the Minor bursary grouping to be given something more encouraging.Successful entries clearly showed the students who had read the Handbook carefully and had made sure all sections of the report were clearly presented. If you are a student who did not achieve bursary status this year, please don’t be disappointed for too long. There’s always next year and there’s always opportunities to improve and learn from mistakes. I like looking at the word ‘FAIL’ and reminding students that it could stand for First Attempt In Learning and there will always be opportunities for other attempts in learning. If you can, come along to the Exhibition and Presentation Day at La Trobe University on Monday 23 October to see what great ideas you could work on for next year.I would like to thank all 21 judges from metropolitan and regional schools who gave their time to evaluate the projects, the teachers who encouraged their students to enter and of course all of the students who entered. Well done, all!

Class Experimental Research ProjectSection Coordinators: Sarah Shatford and Marisa JarvisThe Class Experimental Research Project of the Science Talent Search is a unique section in that it is the only one that allows an entire class to work collaboratively on a common investigation topic. Through this section, students have the opportunity to become emerged in an investigation where they firstly develop and refine questions of an experimental nature. They then seek answers to their questions following an experimental research structure. On completion of their experimental work, they evaluate and reflect on the entire process and look at ways to extend their learning further. The culmination of the project is on Judging Day where they celebrate and communicate their learning to the wider community.

The criteria for this section is closely aligned with requirements of the Australian National Science Curriculum, in particular, the Science Inquiry Strand. It also enables cross links between other areas of the curriculum, including Mathematics, in collecting, recording and analysing data, English with report-writing and communication, and some aspects of ICT where students may use spread-sheets to help create graphs of results. The Class Project Experimental Research can also complement the programs of those primary schools using a PYP or similar inquiry model. It is important, however, for schools coming from an inquiry style approach to remember that they use the traditional terminology linked to scientific method, as this was an area that caused some challenges.Topics are not limited to the year’s national science theme so a project can be chosen that integrates well with a class’s learning focus. Students completing a class project often use this experience as a stepping stone to group and individual entries in other sections in following years.A variety of schools from all educational sectors entered this year, with both new and returning schools, which was fantastic to see. All of the main fields of science were covered in the entries received this year, demonstrating the diversity of learning going on in primary schools in Victoria. We would continue to encourage teachers considering allowing students more freedom with their choices. While it can be a little ‘overwhelming’ to hand over control, the best projects were the ones that were truly developed and led by the students. Their understanding of concepts was at a deeper level than relying just on the boundaries of the formal curriculum. We would also remind teachers to make use of the criteria rubric that can be found on the Science Talent Search website to ensure that everything has been included that was required. The judges are still finding that important sections such as the discussion and risk assessments are being overlooked in the actual report. This does impact the final results.A most satisfying aspect as Class Project Coordinators is having the opportunity to speak with the students as they wait to present their work and again as they exit the judging room. Aside from a few nerves, the students had obviously loved being part of the learning journey and were very excited and eager to share their science learning. It is clear from many of the returning students, that this is one of their more memorable experiences each year. We always enjoy catching up with past students who come back year after year.For primary teachers who are thinking of entering Science Talent search next year, please consider the Class Experimental Research Project. It is an easy way to involve all students. Remember, Science is often inexact and ‘messy’, but often problems and mistakes can teach far more than obtaining perfect answers. It is the mess and the clarity that comes out of the mess that produces some amazing Science Projects and Scientists! Remember, also, that the best learning comes from students when they can make links beyond the task or initial topic. Have fun, allow mess, and be open to problems and discussions. Good luck and we look forward to seeing more fantastic science being communicated to us next year!

Games – All divisionsSection Coordinator: Leonie Lang and Damiano Lo NigroAlbert Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun” - at Wesley College this past week, this is exactly what happened. Educational research tells us that active learning increases student performance in science. What could be more active than students devising and playing their own science games? At the Games Judging Day at Wesley College, students enjoyed setting up their games and playing them with the science teachers who were the judges. We were also pleased to welcome student teachers from The University of Melbourne, who were mentored by the practising teachers. The judges used a rubric which closely followed the guidelines listed in the Science Talent Search Handbook.This year 141 entries (representing over 200 students) were judged and almost half of these were awarded bursaries. It is pleasing that teachers are making time available in the crowded curriculum for students to pursue STS endeavors; given that STEM is now such a vital cog in schooling. When completing their projects, students used their interpersonal skills to devise a project based on an area of science of their choosing. The best entries were those that not only contained good science, but showed evidence that research was used to develop the game around finding solutions to real life issues. Although students entering the Games section are not obliged to follow the theme for the year, the topic of Future Earth leant itself very effectively to concerns about global issues of Global Sustainability. Other popular topics were related Ecosystems, Food Technology or other environmental issues. Tasks that promoted problem solving were highly regarded whereas “luck” squares in board games, ‘Opoly’ based games and recall of trivial facts did not score well. Overall, the judges were very impressed with the creativity shown by students to produce eye-catching and innovative games, which were original and fun to play.All this was made possible by the generosity of many science teachers who encouraged their students to enter the Science Talent Search, guided their research of the science ideas and inspired them to express their creativity in many different ways. Many of these teachers also gave hours of their free time to judge the entries. We thank the parents for supporting their sons and daughters in preparing their entries, bringing them to the venue and sharing with them the experiences of the day. We also thank the students who put so much work into completing their entries and brought them to be judged. They have achieved much learning about science and shared their learning with the players of the games and with the judges.

To stimulate an ongoing interest in the serious

study of Sciences by:

a) encouraging independent self-motivated project work amongst students of science;

b) giving students the opportunity to communicate their achievements to a wider audience;

c) according recognition of effort and achievement for their scientific enterprise.

2. To promote the direct involvement of the students in the process of science and its communication.

3. To give the public at large an opportunity to see the quality of work being achieved in Science, by both primary and secondary students.
