One of the roles of professional associations like AGA is to develop new thinking on issues affecting those we represent. This new thinking is developed out of research and draws on the considerable resources and experiences of our members and counterparts in the private sector – our Corporate Partners. These organizations all have long-term commitments to sup-porting the financial management community and choose to partner with and help AGA in its mission of advancing government accountability.
AGA has been instrumental in assisting the develop-ment of accounting and auditing standards and in generating new concepts for the effective organiza-tion and administration of government financial man-agement functions.
AGA conducts independent research and analysis of all aspects of government financial management. These studies make AGA a leading advocate for im-proving the quality and effectiveness of government fiscal administration, program performance, and ac-countability.
These in-depth studies are made possible with the support of our Corporate Partners.

Chapter President’s Message
LaTaya Lucas
2014-2015
Welcome to the February 2015 issue of the Capital City Focus. This is the midpoint of the 2014-2015 program year, but you would never know it, because the Montgomery AGA committees con-tinue to be running full speed ahead. I’ve decided to talk about the month of FIRST things happen-ing with the Chapter.
February is Early Career Month, and that’s nothing new. But, did you notice Navigation 2015 on the website? The Membership/Early Career committee has spearheaded the first workshop for Young Professionals and others. Just take a minute and read that. For the first time, career counselors will be on hand to help the attendees navigate their career path. Don’t you wish we could have started our careers with an opportunity to find our professional fit? The workshop is free, but the Chapter would like to extend an invitation for the students to network with us at the luncheon immediately following their training. If you would like to participate as a sponsor ($15), contact [email protected]. February will also be the first time ALL members can preview the video from the Journey event. Remember the questions many of you stopped to answer for the Young Professionals (YPs) at the Fall training? Well, it’s time to see how they captured your advice on camera. Come out Friday, February 13th to see which chapter members are in the video. Could one of them be you? The Community Service committee is also putting the Chapter on the map also. For the first time, Montgomery AGA
will participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). I am thrilled about our partnership with Ala-
bama State University to bring volunteers together for FREE tax preparation for the community. VITA will be availa-
ble each Saturday by appointment only. Please spread the word. Let me reverse, and say that our January luncheon
was very entertaining, hands-on, and educational.
Michael Jackson brought his family to role play active shooters. He used the
audience to demonstrate that a person cannot sustain themselves for a long
period during a fight, and he had other props to illustrate how we can pre-
pare ourselves in advance to handle
difficult situations that may occur in
the workplace. Below are two excerpts
from his discussion (full slides to be
posted soon). Remember that one hour
of CPE was available; please contact
[email protected], if you did not receive your certificate.
March is right around the corner; I mentioned that because our CGFM Committee has started the work on having the CGFM program recognized by local governments across the state. If you live in a small town and would like to bring the CGFM to your community’s attention, our CGFM committee directors would love to help you in these efforts. Please contact them at [email protected] for tools you can use.
