None of These Diseases:A Lesson from History

The Corona Virus has changed the way we live, at least for the near future.Yet, because of medical advances and technology we look forward tocontainment, a cure, and a recovery. Sadly, we have lost touch with a segmentof our American history that was shaped dramatically by unintendedpestilence visited upon Native Americans by European settlers seeking aland of promise. Highlighting a subject many of our history textbooks fail toadequately cover or simply omits, writer Ralph Buntyn explores a disturbingfact of our colonial past in his timely article titled: “None of These Diseases:A Lesson from History.”

Encouragement Regarding theTimes We Are In and Pesach

By Morgan and Nita Knudsvig

(I am using the name YHVH to refer to the God of Israel, the Father, in thiswriting)

Recently as I have watched what is happening in the world (Pandemic of2020) and the Hebrew word: “Mitzrayim” has come to mind. Mitzrayim isusually translated into English as Egypt. In the Ancient Hebrew PictographMitzrayim is the concept of a pressing in or on someone…pressure from allsides.

Throughout our lives we have found ourselves under the stress oflife/pressure in a lot of areas: health concerns, finances, relationships, safetyof ourselves and loved ones, our faith, responsibility, doing what is rightaccording to YHVH in each situation, etc. The pressure seems to me moreintense in the crisis of the world at this time. Thinking on this, I amreminded that this kind of pressure built in intensity for the Children ofIsrael the longer they were in Egypt/Mitzrayim “the place of pressure fromall sides.” Are we experiencing some of the same?

It is amazing to me that this intense pressure of these times now is unfoldingbefore our very eyes during the season of preparing for Pesach/Passover…not just physical preparation but preparing in our inward parts (using theterm that King David used).

Pesach/Passover: the time we are to remember the circumstances of theChildren of Israel in Mitzrayim/ Egypt, the place of great pressure fromslavery, plagues and hardship.

Pesach/Passover: the time we are to remember and honor YHVH and Hisgreat power, His Deliverance, Salvation, and Redemption by His MightyHand toward His People, and His Character (full of faithful kindness, longsuffering, forgiving, compassionate, full of mercy, mighty, glorious, etc.).

Pesach/Passover: the time to remember that many of the Children of Israelin the midst of great pressure turned to YHVH and cried out with a greatvoice, many chose to be obedient to stay in their homes the night of Pesach, many were willing to flee Mitzrayim following Moshe into the wilderness.

Pesach/Passover: a time to remember to learn from the ancient people of

Page 5: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

Pesach/Passover: a time to remember to learn from the ancient people ofIsrael to continue to choose to walk in YHVH’s Ancient Paths, to continue togrow in His Character in us, and to choose in a time of testing/great pressureto continue choosing His Ways.

May this time of preparing for Pesach/Passover and the week long Feast ofUnleavened Bread be a time of great joy even under pressure. May it be atime of drawing near to YHVH. May it be a time of more releasing from theworld system in our lives and embracing being led into the wilderness/bemidbar (Ancient Hebrew pictograph word for wilderness having theconcept of the wilderness being a place of YHVH’s order), choosing more ofHis Kingdom, His character, His Shalom (completeness), His Ways cominginto our lives. Notice that the pressure did not leave when they went to thewilderness…it was just different circumstances. Still the pressure to chooseto trust YHVH and walk in His Ways.

May YHVH continue to bless you with His Emet (Ancient HebrewPictograph word for His Truth which is the concept of something that isfirm) and that He would shomar you and your family (Ancient HebrewPictograph word which is the concept of guard, keep, watch over andprotect). Same word in scripture when it says that YHVH keeps Israel andthat YHVH says for us to keep the commandments.

With much love, Morgan and Nita

One of the Editor's Grandsons at a Past Pesach

Telling the StoryFrom all of us at United Israel World Union I want to take this opportunity towish you all a wonderful, meaningful, and joyous Festival of Passover.

One of the key points of Passover is the telling of the story. It is mostcertainly the greatest story ever told. This act of salvation is the very thingfor which YHVH, the God of Israel is known. Repeatedly in the HebrewScriptures, we find YHVH described as the God that brought forth thechildren of Israel out of bondage. It is a story worth telling and now is theappointed time to do so. This note is intended to provide you with some helpin telling that story. Of course there are plenty of resources on the internetto assist you, but this is my own contribution to your search. Assemble yourfamily. Invite some friends. Study the passages in this note and tell the story! If you find yourself alone, read the story anyway. Tell yourself the story!

This is mainly intended for those who perhaps have never hosted a Passovermeal. I have participated in Passover meals that went so long the childrenwere bored and the adults were beginning to feel as though the host wantedthem to get a taste of the entire 40 years in the wilderness in one L O N Gnight! One thought that went through my mind as I sat through the longestand most boring Passover was – Didn’t the Bible say that they ate this meal inhaste (Exodus 12:11)? Why is this night different than any other night? Theanswer to that question should be a positive one. A learning experience thatis both informative and fun. Engaging and joyous. Look. I am not knockingthe approach of others, but as a teacher I have learned that if the studentdoes not learn, then the lesson has been wasted.

I love the picture in this note of one of my grandsons as he held the piece ofunleavened bread. What went through his mind? Probably something quitesimple, like…this is one HUGE cracker! Use the meal to teach and to tell, but

Page 9: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

simple, like…this is one HUGE cracker! Use the meal to teach and to tell, butplease don’t forget that the little ones (and many of the big ones) will belooking and listening to learn. You will have a captive audience. Don’t losethem. It is our job to educate and inspire.

The name of the meal is the seder. It is a word that means “order.” The bookthat lays out the order of the service is called a Haggadah. The root wordmeans “to tell.” The traditional Haggadah”S” (there are multiple versionsavailable) are meant to share the story in order. Whether you have aHaggadah or not is not essential. You can tell the story quite well if youknow the story well. So, familiarize yourself with the story by reading thesepassages and make a few notes.

You will need some unleavened bread and bitter herbs. For the bitter herbs, many use horseradish. Go easy on the horseradish. A little dab will do ya aswe say in the south. The bitter herbs represent how the lives of the childrenof Israel were made bitter through hard bondage. You may want to have saltwater and parsley. When you speak of the tears of the children of Israel(they cried because of the hard bondage), have everyone take a piece ofthe parsley and dip it in the salt water. This will make an impression. Thetraditional “charoseth” is a mixture of apples diced and mixed with honeyand nuts. Recipes on the internet abound. It is supposed to represent themortar that was used to make bricks. Experiment with this. It is hard to messup apples, honey and nuts. Plus compared to the horseradish, it will be thefavored part of the meal.

Here are some other things that will help make an impression. If the sky isclear where you are, go outside and look up. See the moon? This is the way itlooked when the Children of Israel left Egypt! The full moon gave them light. The sky looked just like this when the children of Israel left Egypt.

Passover is about experiencing the past and future as well. It is aboutredemption and freedom. The Prophet Jeremiah says that another Exodus iscoming for the people of God…an even greater exodus than the one we readabout tonight! (see Jeremiah 16:14-15)

The Story According to the Hebrew Bible

This is not a comprehensive list of passages, but it should be helpful as youprepare to tell the story. Remember, this is not intended to be presented asan authorized Haggadah. If you choose to do a more traditional version, there are plenty of resources on the internet that one can find and downloadfor free. What follows were notes that I assembled several years ago for thepurpose of sharing the story.

The reason we tell the story

Deuteronomy 6:20-25, Exodus 10:2, Exodus 12:24-27

Passovers Past - A Look at theBiblical Record

This teaching, delivered on Shabbat HaGadol, is the first in a three-partseries on the themes associated with the ancient Hebrew Festival of Pesach,or Passover. In this introductory lesson, Ross takes a look at the Biblicalrecord regarding the keeping of Passover. How many Passovers arementioned in the Hebrew Bible? What can we learn from the Passovers ofthe past?

Here is the link to the blog post entry on our website for this teaching. Atthe link you will find the video files from YouTube and Facebook, the audiofile, and John "Baruch" Perry's helpful class notes.

The Last Supper, Passover, GoodFriday, and Easter Sunday: Digging

into our SourcesDr. James Tabor has recently posted a blog post on his popular TaborBlog. This post contains an extensive list of several articles meant to address whatthe New Testament has to say about the season of Passover, in particular, thefinal week of Jesus' life. These articles cover a variety of topics related to theHistorical Jesus. Don't miss, The Last Supper, Passover, Good Friday, andEaster Sunday: Digging into our Sources.

Just a few days ago we witnessed the tiny sliver of the new moon ofNissan, the First Month on the Biblical Calendar and now 10 days later,as we mark the close of this Sabbath day (Shabbat Hagadol on theobserved Jewish calendar) we are on the countdown to Passover, yetthis will be a Passover like no other for as we make our preparations forthis ancient festival we are trying to make sense of our world whichseems to have been turned upside down.

Indeed our world is currently in dire straits…many are sick and dyingfrom the Corona Virus which is rapidly spreading at an alarming ratethroughout the globe causing a Pandemic of gigantic proportions.

Along with our struggle to keep our head above water and maintainour faith, many of us may have questions about Passover… in light of ourcurrent situation is it even relevant for us today? The answer is aresounding YES! Let’s take a few moments for some questions and a bitof background so as to understand its powerful message for us as bothindividuals and as a global community…and in so doing discover someof those hidden sparks beneath the surface!

What is the Connection Between the Moon’s Renewal and the EgyptianExodus?

The connection is of course PASSOVER!!! But in order to make it our ownand bring it down to a personal level, each of us must first take stock ofwhere we are! As we celebrate Passover this season, we can look backwardsnot only to that first Passover 3500 years ago and strive to put ourselves intothe minds of those Hebrew slaves; but as we do, we must take a look atourselves to discover our own Mitzrayim and then go forward as did theChildren of Israel when they came out of Egypt and were afforded amiraculous crossing of the Red Sea. As Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks says, weonly see the Providence of HaShem as we look backwards, but we must liveour lives forward…and I might add… we must live our lives forward each dayespecially in the light of the situation we are currently facing!

Back to the Beginning

Going all the way back to the Creation, beyond the First Passover, we read inGenesis 1:14, “And G-d said, Let there be lights in the firmament of heaven todivide the day from the night and let them be for signs and seasons and fordays and years.” The Hebrew word used here for sign is ot. An ot is a stamp,a seal, a reminder to help us keep in touch with our Creator. In His infinitewisdom, HaShem knew that we would need many signs, otot… manyreminders to enable us to remain close to Him. Through these signs, Hecontinually calls us to Himself in covenant relationship.

The Mo’edim, Mikra Kodesh - The Festivals, Holy Convocations

Not only does HaShem give us many otot, signs, He also gives us specialtimes that we are to meet with Him. We see that HaShem placed the lights

Page 14: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

times that we are to meet with Him. We see that HaShem placed the lightsin the firmament of heaven, not only for signs, but also for seasons. TheHebrew word used here for seasons is mo’edim or festivals. We read inLeviticus 23:2 that that these festivals are called “Feasts of HaShem, mikrakodesh, Holy Convocations. HaShem refers to these festivals as “My feasts.”When we come together with kavanah, heart felt intent, to celebrate Hisfeasts at His appointed times, His mo’edim, we bring honor to Him andHe blesses us with His Divine Presence and draws us close to Him. In Hisinfinite love He provides us with many opportunities to be drawn and re-drawn over and over again into holy relationship with Him.

The Sabbath was the first festival that HaShem made holy, kadosh.(Leviticus. 23:1-3). The Feast or Festival of Passover (Pesach) andUnleavened Bread is the next. (Leviticus 23:4-5). In Exodus 12, we are giventhe account of the very first Passover, a wonderful festival that we are tocelebrate under the light of the full moon from year to year.

The Message of Passover

“Draw out and take for yourselves sheep for your families and kill thePesach offering.” (Shemot, Exodus 12), this is to say, Withdraw your handsfrom idolatry, take for yourselves, sheep, slaughter the gods of theEgyptians and make a Pesach offering. In other words, “Withdraw fromidolatry and cleave to the Mitzvot." (Yalkut Bo 206)

The message of Pesach is freedom, redemption, new birth, new life, movingfrom darkness into light…but not without a price. Our ancestors of old paidthe price, first when they were enslaved in Egypt, Mitzrayim…and manytimes thereafter throughout history. The enslavement continues to this day, both for the Jewish people and those that have attached themselves to themin their love for HaShem, the One G-d and Creator and for His Torah.

Many of us have spent our lives with false beliefs and fears which have in thepast entrapped us, strangled, and entangled us. Then we found Torah, BaruchHaShem, and we were set free! Yet the struggle continues as oftentimes wehave carryovers that unconsciously seep into our newfound Torah faith.

Pesach, the Festival of our Freedom sends us a message to wake up, toremember…to remember our affliction, and go forward and be free…thepromise of freedom is right at our doorstep, but it is up to us to releaseourselves, but how? We must, with bitachon (trust) take the plunge like theChildren of Israel did…take the plunge into the sea and follow the paththrough it…not around it!

Mitzrayim – Breaking Out!

Rabbi Donnel Katz teaches that we are in exile; and when we are in exile weare not totally conscious. It is as if we are on auto pilot. Being in exile, he saysis living consumed by fears, false pretenses and things that are not

Page 15: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

is living consumed by fears, false pretenses and things that are notimportant. When we are unconscious, we don’t know that we areunconscious, so in a sense we are living a lie. We are actually double-boundwhen we are in this condition. The Hebrew word for Egypt is Mitzrayimwhich means a narrow, constricted place. It is spelled with a doublemem, a letter which in the beginning of the word is slightly open, but atthe end of the word it is completely closed, as if to indicate that once weare in this place, we are trapped!

We must break out! Again we ask ourselves the question, but how do webreak out? HaShem says that He brought us out to bring us in…to bring usin not only into the Land, but into connection and relationship with Himbecause His ultimate purpose is to shechan… to dwell within us…in ourmidst. In Exodus 25:8, we read HaShem’s promise to His people, ,ועשו ליAnd let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may“ מקדש; ושכנתי, בתוכםdwell among them.”

We each have a purpose, but in the day to day living of our lives, we oftenforget WHO we are, and WHAT is really important. We need a wakeup calland sometimes that only comes with a jolt… when we reach rock bottom! For some of us, this current world situation is our wakeup call…some havesaid that it is a “wakeup call for the world”…a wakeup call to do t’shuvah(repent/return) to HaShem, our G-d and Creator. “Return to me and I willreturn to you,” implores HaShem.

As difficult as it is, it is actually a hidden blessing to be in that conditionbecause we then begin to realize those things we weren’t aware ofbefore. We are broken…yet we are in a good place because we are on ourway to becoming more conscious, to discovering those hidden sparksbeneath the surface, those sparks within ourselves and within oneanother…within life itself!

We are unable to change until we first come to the realization we are inexile. During exile, we forget that we have a destiny, a Divine purpose. Weeasily become consumed by our negative thought patterns and our habitsthat have become second nature…habits that entrap us and inhibit ourgrowth; we forget who we are…we must grow and break out, break out ofour comfort zones. Considering our current world situation, I don’t believeany of us are still in our comfort zones!

Passover is a time when we can look back and see the mighty workings ofthe Creator amidst all odds. It is a time when HaShem can show us what ispossible if we just open our eyes and our consciousness and walk forward inbitachon (trust).

The Kotzker Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotz) said, “There isnothing as whole as a broken heart!” In Psalm 147, we find the comfortingpromise that HaShem not only “builds up Yerushalayim, but that He gatherstogether the outcasts of Israel, He heals the broken-hearted and binds up

Page 16: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

together the outcasts of Israel, He heals the broken-hearted and binds uptheir wounds!” And as if that is not enough, the text continues, “He countsthe number of stars. He calls them all by their names. Great is our G-d and ofgreat power!” What an amazing concept! The same G-d who creates thestars and calls them by their names is the one who binds up our brokenhearts! When we are broken, HaShem welcomes us with open arms becausewe are humbled and we realize (become conscious) that we are far awayfrom where we wish to be…and that is with Him.

Passover – Past Present and Future

When you ask an Israeli how they are, many will reply “B’seder!” Weusually take that to mean they are okay, but it means much more! “B’seder"literally means that “everything is happening according to an order,” likethe Seder…according to a purpose!

Whether we will be doing a traditional Passover Seder or simply reading anddiscussing the text from the Book of Exodus, it is important to keep in mindthat HaShem had an order and a purpose for ordaining this festival to beobserved in every generation, dor v’dor, for all time. It was to be a memorialand a night of watching, a night to commemorate HaShem’s passing over,(actually skipping or jumping over) the houses of His children whofollowed His commandment to place blood on their doorposts, thus sparingtheir firstborn sons from death (Exodus 12:24-42).

There have certainly been lapses in the past 3500 years as far as the Jewishpeople keeping Passover, but perhaps this year it will most likely be morewidely observed than it has been in many years…and it will be different.Instead of large communal gatherings, people all over the world will becelebrating Passover in their homes either alone or with only a few familymembers. But none of us are really ever alone… Throughout the Torah, weread the heartfelt cry of our Creator to us, “Return to Me and I will return toyou.” (Malachi 3:7, Zechariah 1:3)

HaShem has been calling out to us since the beginning of time…it is timefor us to call out to Him, and in the midst of this global pandemic withthe Corona virus spreading across the globe, what better time but now!

Rabbi Michael Skobac and UIWU Vice President, Ross K Nichols recentlyshared a very captivating observation pointing out that the virus is calledCorona, in Hebrew it is spelled קרא נא which means “Please call out” (to Me).Nah is a soft “please.”

Rabbi Skobac in using ancient rabbinic sources also adds the followingthought provoking information “The virus is also called Covid-19. The wordCovid shows up in a Mishnah at the beginning of Masechet Berachot. It saysthere, אין עומדין להתפלל אלא מתוך כובד דראש –a person should not get up topray unless he has covid rosh. What is covid? Rashi says it means humility, recognizing we are nothing and we can’t do anything without HaShem. We

Page 17: Special Passover Edition...2020/04/06  · Ross will be live on Erev Pesach (Facebook and YouTube) to tell the story of redemption. You can all join us online, April 8th at 6:00 p.m

recognizing we are nothing and we can’t do anything without HaShem. Weneed to call out to Him with covid (humility). And what should we call out?19- the 19 berachot of the Amidah.”

Whether we are praying the prescribed prayers in the siddur or praying inour own words, the point is that HaShem implores us to call out to Him…andhumility is the key…

“If My people who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways; then will Ihear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal theirland.”(II Chronicles 7:14)

In the coming days as we continue to prepare our hearts and our homes forthis awesome Season of Pesach, may we think on these things andremember that it is a mo’ed, a Divine appointment with our Creator set fromthe beginning of time.

Its message of redemption and deliverance that calls out through the ageshas now come full circle to us once again…may we let it penetrate deeplyinto our innermost beings…and as a result discover even more of thoseHidden Sparks Beneath the Surface, those sparks of wisdom and insight justready for us to embrace and propel us forward through these difficult andheartbreaking times as we look forward to the Great Coming Redemption!

“Therefore, behold, the days are coming, says YHVH that it shall nomore be said: 'As YHVH lives, that brought up the children of Israel outof the land of Egypt,' but: 'As YHVH lives, that brought up the childrenof Israel from the land of the north, and from all the countries whitherHe had driven them'; and I will bring them back into their land that Igave unto their fathers.” (Jeremiah 16:14)
