LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Dear Special Olympics Georgia Fans and Supporters:

In a time of economic downturn and the tightening of belts, Special Olympics Georgia (SOGA) held fast to the universal power of sports creating champions, unlocking potential and breaking down barriers. Your belief in “compassion creates action” allowed us to have a great 2009. We are grateful for your continued support

as you spread the word that people with intellectual disabilities are more similar than different from you and I, and that everyone has the right to be treated respectfully. No one should be considered “retarded” or use the “r” word.

SOGA athletes are inspirational in their journey of self-discovery, hard work, and determination, and this continued throughout last year. Helping athletes achieve their dreams are 18,000 engaged volunteers, athletes’ families and friends, generous donors, a knowledgeable Board of Directors, the Honorary Board, law enforcement and our staff. It was these groups working together with the common goal of empowerment and understanding that created success in 2009.

In 2009, we grew the number of participants at State Games, we hosted our first ever week-long athlete camp, began preparing for an individual major gifts campaign and screened more volunteers than ever before. Your unwavering support created a strong momentum and provided SOGA the positive boost needed to kick off our 40 year anniversary in 2010.

At this 40 year mark, we continue to increase the number of participating athletes by five percent. We also continue to grow our volunteer base, which is getting stronger every day. Now more than ever, we are bringing today’s youth without intellectual disabilities into our programs so that they can share in the excitement as well as understand that our athletes and the Special Olympics games are vital in creating a sense of community in Georgia. Thank you for your continued support in helping the athletes achieve their goals and dreams. With your help, we continue to empower children and adults with intellectual disabilities and remove obstacles so they feel accepted, respected, and accomplished. We look forward to the future and your support in commemorating 40 years of Special Olympics Georgia in 2010. Sincerely,

GM Sheats Ben Deutsch Georgia Milton-Sheats Ben Deutsch Chief Executive Officer Board Chairman page 4

~ A Trailblazer in Sports and Spirit ~ The Story of Katelyn Eaton

The first time Katelyn Eaton swam down a competition lane at State Summer Games, she heard her family’s cheers and turned around to wave hello. Winning is good, but competing, feeling loved ones’ support, and being recognized is reward enough. So being the only Special Olympics athlete applauded at a regional sports awards night was more than exciting. It is Katelyn’s joyful spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that earned her the athletics award that only one other athlete in history has won among athletes without disabilities. The award, named after well-known Kennesaw State University athletics benefactor Bobbie Bailey, recognized the achievements of about 30 high school female athletes from 34 schools in Cobb, Cherokee, Paulding, Bartow

and Douglas counties. Hearing her name called out at Kennesaw State University’s auditorium was Katelyn’s proudest moment. Among the competition medals, the high school letter for swimming and track and field competitions, this is the biggest award the Cherokee High School student has received since she began competing at the age of 12. “It’s wonderful that people with special needs are more accepted and recognized. Even though not all students are at the same level of ability, the effort is at the same level and they still have a competitive desire,” said Katelyn’s mom Ginger Eaton. Katelyn’s parents describe her as a personal, loving, caring and sensitive child. “She’s really never met someone she doesn’t like,” her dad Tom said. “She just enjoys camaraderie, whether her teammates have intellectual disabilities or not. She taught us years ago what was really important; everyone is happy, healthy and together,” Ginger said.

`Athlete Overcomes Medically Fragile Challenges with a Camera ~ The Story of Tim Pruitt Athlete Tim Pruitt gives new meaning to the expression taking time to smell the roses. It has become his gift. Tim hangs back and takes his time photographing people and still life. He has photographed award winning beautiful images that faster paced photographers might miss. One of his photos, a cowboy in a plaid shirt, jeans and cowboy hat, tipping his head and snoozing in a lawn chair, won great acclaim at the Georgia National Fair winning first prize. His photo was selected out of 1,000-plus other entries in the beginner’s category.

Tim is medically fragile and sometimes has to wear a cast because his bones are weak. He doesn’t participate in contact sports so he competes in skills competitions instead. His participation in sports is somewhat limited, so photography has given him the world. “Pictures make me feel good,” Tim says. His mother, Becky Pruitt, said light-heartedly that Tim, a senior at

Jones County High School, is so laid back that people can easily think he doesn’t enjoy much. Tim is a member of the ShutterBugs Camera Club in Macon, where athletes learn photography and take field trips. Just two years ago, Pruitt and other club members learned how to hold the camera, turn it on, and change the batteries. They went on field trips to Massey Lanes Gardens, Scarborough Gardens, and the River Walk to photograph the beauty of daylilies, camellias, and still life settings. Since then, he and his family always pack the camera so he can photograph

his favorite things on everyday trips. “This was the opportunity to compete in the real world; and say, ‘I am a photographer. Here are my prints,’” said the camera club founder Jim Berry. Today, Tim is breaking ground not only for himself but for other athletes alike. “I think people are realizing that people with special needs have abilities and skills like you and me,” Berry said. “Let’s put a camera in their hands. They’re seeing that there is beauty all around them now.” page 7

~ ~ Young Athlete Makes a Great Start in Cognitive Development ~

The Story of Jack Roney

When physical therapist Skye Camp met seven-year-old Jack Roney, who has autism, he would scream during one-on -one therapy. That plan didn’t work so she brought him into a small class that played follow the leader, threw and caught balls, ran and hopped.

Twice a week, students participate in exercises within the Special Olympics Young Athletes program, where children learn the basics of cognitive development, hand-eye coordination and motor skills. The school is one of about 60 similar programs in Georgia.

“I would watch him and if Michael or another student would roll the ball, it was as if Jack said to himself, “if Michael did it, I’ll do it, too,” Camp said. “Everything I couldn’t get him to do, he did in a group setting,” she said.

Jack and other Young Athletes are introduced to sports, with the goal of preparing them for Special Olympics. The program focuses on basics crucial to cognitive development. Young athletes begin to interact with other children, whether or not they have intellectual disabilities. Jack’s mother Jennifer Roney, said Camp and the program has already changed his life. “Sometimes, other children still can’t understand Jack. Even with autism, he’s been a child who’s been social and wants to interact and this has given him a chance to make friends,” she said.

Camp Inspire The mission of Camp Inspire is to provide Special Olympics Georgia athletes the opportunity to attend an overnight, week- long camp, where they train in sports in a camp atmosphere; encouraging play, laughter and fun.

Camp Inspire hosted 48 campers and 12 counselors from all over Georgia in 2009 in activities ranging from sports to dance. At first, some campers were shy about the experience ahead of them. Others missed parents because this was their first time away from home. But as the days went on, friendships formed, fun caught on, and by the end of the week, campers developed lasting relationships and memories that will live on. Staff members who lead camp said:

●“The silly songs sang during camp helped break down the barriers our society constructs and created a sense of community among our athletes and our staff,” said Daniel Lockart. ●“I saw the athletes smiling and laughing with one another, I saw them set goals and surpass those goals every day, I saw them try new things for the very first time, and I saw them develop friendships that will last a lifetime,” said Emily Young. ●“I have seen many athletes since camp and they recognize me by name and continue to talk about how much fun they had and cannot wait for next Year,” said Rex Dorsey. page 8
