Hello from the Winemaker“Spring is nature’s way of saying, Let’s party!” -Robin Williams

I thought this quote from the late and great Robin Williams was perfectly descriptive of the vibe that is in the air once spring comes. Our plum, apricot and peach trees are doing beautiful things in our backyard. Yay for rain, yay for flowers, yay for spring! Once I see flowers on our trees, I know it’s time to start checking vines. We are seeing bud break on our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines at our Estate Vineyard in Sonoma and out in Contra Costa too. Thus, we start the clock until harvest 2016; it is only about 4 and a half months away.

Sheesh. The past year really has flown by! April 3rd marks Skylar Rose’s first birthday. That is insane; I cannot believe my little nugget is a year old. She is walking around waving at everyone and everything-human or not. She says Mama, Dada, hi, bye-bye, my, puppy, hot, baba and nigh-night. She has figured out how to string words together too, my favorite saying being “my mama.” When either Jack or I leave the house she says “dada bye bye,” or “mama bye bye.” Anyway, she’s awesome, in so many ways.

Another thing Sky does without trying, is she marks how quickly time moves. Just like that we are bottling up all of our lovely 2015 whites and the balance of the 2014 reds. Things are tasting fabulous. 2015 was a fickle growing year that produced very concentrated fruit with lots of flavor. It is my pleasure and honor to present the wines of this vintage to you folks over the next year.

We just bottled up a 2015 Pinot Blanc and a 2015 Fumé Blanc that I am excited for you guys to try. Don’t worry, Brianna the Wine Club Manager came into the cellar while the Fume Blanc and Pinot Blanc were still fermenting and said, “I’m taking all of this for my people.” As Oprah would say, “You get a Pinot Blanc, and You get a Pinot Blanc...You all get a Pinot Blanc to take home with you!!” Obviously we’re excited about the Pinot Blanc-coming your way soon.

Speaking of exciting wines...I’m super stoked for the April shipment! We are getting the last of the 2012 Harris Kratka Zinfandel, the last of the Chalk Hill Reserve Zinfandel and the yummy 2014 Sonoma Chardonnay. As I’ve mentioned, I am a Club Viva member because we have strict allocations on wine club wines. I bought a case of the Chalk Hill Zin, and Jack and I drank it all. This wine is outstanding and we are in need of another bottle.

2014 Sonoma Chardonnay: This gorgeous Chard comes from a buddy’s vineyard just down the road from our Estate Lone Oak Vineyard. The Sonoma Coast American Viticulture Area may be Sonoma County’s most enigmatic wine region. Chardonnay does beautifully in this area due to the direct daily influence from the Pacific Ocean (which really defines this appellation). On our Chardonnays, I usually do all Medium+ toasted barrels, but on this one I used a combination of stainless steel and High Toast oak to capture the diversity of flavors from both. The “naked Chardonnay” flavors from the stainless steel fermentation have a beautiful interplay with the aggressive High Toast oak notes of cappuccino, and French vanilla. The beautiful minerality in this wine is followed by subtle aromas of French vanilla ice cream, sugar cookie and angel food cake with a host of tropical flavors including ripe sun-dried mango, papaya and passion fruit.

2012 Harris Kratka Zinfandel: On this wine, I do a co-fermentation of Zinfandel (90%), Carignane (6%), and Petite Sirah (4%). The complexity of this wine is due to the teamwork among all three grape varietals. All of these grapes come from the Harris Kratka ranch in Alexander Valley. It is planted on sloping red soil hillsides basking in views of Mt. St. Helena. The vines have been budded to the original old clone that has been there for more than 70 years. This wine boasts mouthwatering strawberry and raspberry that leap from the glass. Juicy plum, coconut, sarsaparilla, dark cocoa, rosemary, lavender, black cherry and Gala apple skin. YUM! This baby is juicy.

2013 Chalk Hill Reserve Zinfandel: This Reserve truly does justice to the capabilities of the Windsor Oaks vineyard site in Chalk Hill. I did a co-fermentation with 2% Petite Sirah in there to add complexity. We aged this Zinfandel in barrel for two-and-a-half years before bottling, giving the oak ample time to integrate and get all velvety and outstanding. This stunner exhibits aromas of ripe cherry, sarsaparilla, butterscotch and vanilla followed by flavors of strawberry, raspberry, sage, and a milk chocolate finish. Damn that’s good stuff.

Much Love!Shauna Rosenblum Winemaker
