Enquirer, March 5 1 ,4 Prom the It chmond i^'irg . The cry of emancipation from any section of the slavehoi.i.ng States breaks upon the Southern ear, under tne circumstances tjjatr -surround us, like an alarm ot mutiny at mid-night, after the •Storm has subsided, and while the damages done are being rapidly repaired. But four months ago, our institutions and our Union were trembling and tottering under the throes of the most anxious, excited, and painful political contest that has ever agitated thisnation.andthepopularmind isbutjust beginning to resain its equilibrium, the public pulse to resume iL< regular and healthful tone, when from Missouri, an old and unyielding outpost of Slaverv in the West, comes the murmur of a move- ment towards emancipation. With what prospect of ultimate success, or under what auspices, this suicidal scheme is opened, we are not prepared to say. But that there are ardent and active advo cates on either side, and that the question is t^ be definitively decided, sooner or later, we tljink there is little doubt. The malcontents of Missou- ri raav move heaven and earth in theiig efforts to sweep Slavery from their soil, but ttjgy will be manfully met at every point and fiercely fought upon every inch ot ground, by tne undaunted de- fenders of the opposition. There was a time, when not a few of the wisest and best men in Virginia concurred in the opin- ion that negro Slavery was an evil, and an incubus upon the interests of the State, wheti^perhaps, if possible, some immediate means of QnaBoipation would have been eagerly embraced by j o m e of the ablest spirits iu our councils. And it may bo, indeed, that the opposite extreme of public sen- timent on the subject, which now prevails with every class and craft of our people, is attributable more to the investigations and disquisitions induc- ed by the doubts and fears of that day, than to every other cause combined. The institution of Slavery soon sunk deep into our social system ; once embraced and incorporated among the ele- ments of oiiir organization, its influences, for good or for evil, extended rapidly iu every direction, coloring everything it touched, and carrying weal or woe wherever it went, its agencies either im- mediately or mediately, ramified through every branch of business and principle of legislation ; every vein and artery in the body politic were im- bued with it. And being deemed an evil in the abstract by those honest and able but misguided • men^Eo whom we have alluded, it devolved upon them only to prove their premises, and the cat- alogue of incidental ills would have been incalcu- lable, when an end so desirable would have read- ily suggested the means ; and on the other hand, it became incumbent upon their opposing cotem- poraries to disprove their theory, explode their false philosophy, and disabuse the public mind of the emancipation taint with which it was beginning to be affected, or to give up their ground, and en- ter into a crusade against the sins and iniquities, the demoralizing and impoverishing effects of fbe institution of Slavery. Investigation on both sides ensued, and the result is that negro Slavery is now considered in the Southern States, not " a mildew, a blight, and a scourge," bnt a social, political, and, moral blessing, a special boon of Providence, both to the African and Anglo-Saxon races. Sub- jects so inscrutable in their origin, so profound in their philosophy, so intricate in their relations, and so comprehensive in their influences, demand a thorough understanding in every form and phase, aiM accurate apprehension in every Bearing and effect And we cannot bnt belfeve.fhattUiB eman- cipation movement in Missouri, however, it may be abetted by the outside influences of Aoolitionism in the North, after it has been deliberately disensst ed and analyzed and essayed, will eventuate in a more encouraging conviction, on the part of that people, of the indijpenaability of the institution, under the enjoyment of which, in common with the other slayeholding States of the (Confederacy, it is growing greater and stronger, andricherand happier, with every year that elapses. Emancipat ion in Missouri .

Enquirer, March 5 1

,4

. The cry of emancipation from any section of the slavehoi.i.ng States breaks upon the Southern ear, under tne circumstances tjjatr -surround us, like an alarm ot mutiny at mid-night, after the •Storm has subsided, and while the damages done are being rapidly repaired. But four months ago, our institutions and our Union were trembling and tottering under the throes of the most anxious, excited, and painful political contest that has ever agitated thisnation.andthepopularmind isbutjust beginning to resain its equilibrium, the public pulse to resume iL< regular and healthful tone, when from Missouri, an old and unyielding outpost of Slaverv in the West, comes the murmur of a movement towards emancipation. With what prospect of ultimate success, or under what auspices, this suicidal scheme is opened, we are not prepared to say. But that there are ardent and active advo cates on either side, and that the question is t^ be definitively decided, sooner or later, we tljink there is little doubt. The malcontents of Missouri raav move heaven and earth in theiig efforts to sweep Slavery from their soil, but ttjgy will be manfully met at every point and fiercely fought upon every inch ot ground, by tne undaunted defenders of the opposition.

There was a time, when not a few of the wisest and best men in Virginia concurred in the opinion that negro Slavery was an evil, and an incubus upon the interests of the State, wheti^perhaps, if possible, some immediate means of QnaBoipation would have been eagerly embraced by j o m e of the ablest spirits iu our councils. And it may bo, indeed, that the opposite extreme of public sentiment on the subject, which now prevails with every class and craft of our people, is attributable more to the investigations and disquisitions induced by the doubts and fears of that day, than to every other cause combined. The institution of Slavery soon sunk deep into our social system ; once embraced and incorporated among the elements of oiiir organization, its influences, for good or for evil, extended rapidly iu every direction, coloring everything it touched, and carrying weal or woe wherever it went, its agencies either immediately or mediately, ramified through every branch of business and principle of legislation ; every vein and artery in the body politic were imbued with it. And being deemed an evil in the abstract by those honest and able but misguided

• men^Eo whom we have alluded, it devolved upon them only to prove their premises, and the catalogue of incidental ills would have been incalculable, when an end so desirable would have readily suggested the means ; and on the other hand, it became incumbent upon their opposing cotem-poraries to disprove their theory, explode their false philosophy, and disabuse the public mind of the emancipation taint with which it was beginning to be affected, or to give up their ground, and enter into a crusade against the sins and iniquities, the demoralizing and impoverishing effects of fbe institution of Slavery. Investigation on both sides ensued, and the result is that negro Slavery is now considered in the Southern States, not " a mildew, a blight, and a scourge," bnt a social, political, and, moral blessing, a special boon of Providence, both to the African and Anglo-Saxon races. Subjects so inscrutable in their origin, so profound in their philosophy, so intricate in their relations, and so comprehensive in their influences, demand a thorough understanding in every form and phase, aiM accurate apprehension in every Bearing and effect And we cannot bnt belfeve.fhattUiB emancipation movement in Missouri, however, it may be abetted by the outside influences of Aoolitionism in the North, after it has been deliberately disensst ed and analyzed and essayed, will eventuate in a more encouraging conviction, on the part of that people, of the indijpenaability of the institution, under the enjoyment of which, in common with the other slayeholding States of the (Confederacy, it is growing greater and stronger, and richer and happier, with every year that elapses.
