    Oral care can be very challenging,but with planning, patience and time,it can lead to better oral health.

    This booklet is designed to helpcaregivers maintain goodoral health for theirclient/family memberwith special needs .

    D a i l v B r u s h in g~eryday a sticky film called plaque forms on the teeth.If plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing on aregular basis, it not only causes cavities, but can lead togingivitis and periodontal disease.A two minute brushing twice a day is recommended.If the client/family member you care for is unable to brush,follow these steps:

    Take a p iece of floss approx im ately 45cm(18 inches) long and w rap it around yourm iddle fm gers until you have no m ore than2 .5 em (1 inch) in leng th betw een them

    With the thumb and index finger of each hand,guide the floss gen tly and carefully betw eeneach tooth using a back-and-forth m otion untilit reaches the gum line

    Curve the floss in to a C -shape around eachtooth and slip it under the gum line

    Slide it up and down the side of the too th

    M ove the floss to the side of the neighbouringtooth and repeat

    Rem ove the floss in a back-and-forth m otionand repeat the steps fo r each too th

    U se a clean section of the floss for each tooth

    Ensure that every surface of the denture is thoroughlyscrubbed free of p laque and food p articles. Rinse w ithlu ke-wa rm wa ter.

    If a nightly cleaner like Polident or E fferdent is used,alw ays brush and rinse denture p rior to soaking .

    If cleaning a partial denture, ensure that the claspsare gently cleaned. V igorous scrubbing of the claspscould bend or break them causing the partial to fitin co rrectly or n ot at all.
