SPECIAL INVITATION PLEASE JOIN US Capuchin Provincial Message: Dear Capuchin Friends, Peace and Good! Like his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, our Holy Father Francis gladly proclaims that God is the source of all Good and the font of all Mercy. The Sacrament of Reconciliation, Confession, is a great gift which shows God’s merciful love. Hearing confessions and counselling those in trouble are an important part of Capuchin Franciscans ministry and our Holy Father has chosen two Capuchin saints, St. Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) and St. Leopold of Castelnovo, as patrons of God’s merciful call to reconciliation and grace. The Capuchin Franciscans Western America Province is pleased to announce that Fr. John De La Riva (National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, San Francisco), Fr. Michael Mahoney (Our Lady of Angels Parish, Burlingame), Fr. Matthew Elshoff (Old Mission Santa Ines), and Fr. Jesus Vela (St. Lawrence of Brindisi, Watts) were recently selected by the Province, and approved by Pope Francis, to serve as Missionaries of Mercy along with several hundred other Franciscans from across the globe. In February, Fr. John De La Riva will travel to Rome to be commissioned personally by the Pope as a Missionary of Mercy and to bring first-degree relics to our Capuchin Province from Rome of both Saints, St. Pio and St. Leopold. Among the liturgies, there will be a private Mass and conference with all the Capuchin Franciscans with the Pope discussing the purpose of the Missionaries of Mercy for those commissioned. We invite everyone to join us as we venerate the relics of these two saints and turn to God for forgiveness and healing as you visit our Capuchin sites throughout the state of California, and view the relics from February through November 2016. Please refer to calendar on back. God bless and keep you! With gratitude, Fr. Harold Snider, OFM, Cap., Provincial Minister Capuchin Franciscans WESTERN AMERICA PROVINCE

Capuchin Provincial Message:

Dear Capuchin Friends,

Peace and Good!

Jesus Vela(St.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

If one sacrament could be said to embody the Year of Mercy, it would be Confession. Pope Francis has

chosen to bring the relics of two prominent confessors, Saints Pio and Leopold, both Capuchins, to Saint Peter’s

Basilica in Rome to be venerated during the season of Lent. Following his example, we have chosen also to

have the relics of our brothers present to remind us of the power of the Sacrament of

Reconciliation and renew our understanding of the merciful love of God in our lives.

St. Pio (1887-1968)

In 2002 many people gathered as Pope John Paul II canonized the Capuchin friar known to the entire world as “Padre Pio.” Born Francesco

Forgione, at age 15 he joined the Capuchins taking name Pio. Ordained in 1910, Pio came to the

friary in San Giovanni Rotondo, and on September 20, 1918, received the stigmata.

For nearly 50 years, Padre Pio was a minister of God’s mercy. After morning Mass he would

hear confessions for almost 10 hours a day. Many penitents said that he knew details of their lives

that they had never mentioned. St. Pio saw Jesus in all the sick and suffering and God’s healing

power often came through him. He continued his ministry of mercy until his death on

September 23, 1968.

Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy

St. Leopold (1866-1942)A native of Croatia, St. Leopold joined the Capuchin Franciscans and after his ordination spent most of his life in Padua. St. Leopold was a teacher, but he was best known for his work in the confessional. Despite poor health, he would often spend 13-15 hours a day hearing confessions. He was known for his kindness and patience with penitents. Several bishops sought out his spiritual advice.

Leopold had a profound sense of sin and an evenfirmer sense of God’s grace and mercy. He would say, “I must cooperate with the divine goodness of our Lord who has deigned to choose me so thatby my ministry, the divine promise of mercy might be fulfilled.” St. Leopold died on July 30, 1942, and was canonized in 1982.
