Oh, Oranges!Oh, Oranges!Though stockings today are filled with everything from GummiBears to iPods, tucked in the bottom of some is still an age-olddelicacy: a fresh, shiny orange. Toys and gadgets come and go, butoranges endure. Heres why we cherish this tasty tradition.

Good Old St. NickAccording to Citrus: A History

by Pierre Laszlo (University of ChicagoPress, 2007), the orange-giving tradi-tion began in Europe, where orangetrees became part of celebrations ofrenewal because they came to fruitionin the winter. Te practice began inpagan times and persisted in Christmas

    festivities. Oranges were only available

to the wealthy and powerful until theIndustrial Revolution, so they were longconsidered special gifts.

Te St. Nicholas Center, Holland,Mich., credits European immigrantsfor bringing the tradition of puttingoranges in Christmas stockings toAmerica. Te story goes that Nicholas,

the third century saint, threw gold to apoor family in need of dowry money.Artists came to depict the saint hold-ing gold balls to symbolize the goldenoffering, and sometimes used oranges orapples to symbolize the dowry. Orangescame to be a traditional gift, oftentucked in the toes of stockings to recallSt. Nicholas gifts and generosity.

Orange You Glad I DidntSay Banana?

Just like their timeless knock-knockjoke counterpart, the origin of orangescant be pinpointed. According to Sunk-ist Growers, Inc., this sweet, juicy fruitcan be traced to Southeast Asia all theway back in 4,000 B.C. During theMiddle Ages, citrus spread throughoutsouthern Europe. Later, ChristopherColumbus is said to have brought

orange, lemon and citron seeds toAmerica on his second voyage. Span-iards then began planting the first citrusseeds in 1769, followed by the first bigCalifornia citrus orchard at Mission SanGabriel in 1804.

Oranges became a hot ticket afterthree navel orange trees arrived in 1870

from Brazil to be planted at the homeof Eliza and Luther ibbets. After fiveyears, bud stock for the trees sold forfive dollars a bud. wo years later, thetranscontinental railroad was com-pleted and the first load of orangeswas shipped to St. Louis, beginningthe wholesale marketing of Californiacitrus.

Depression DelightTe rise of modern transportation

systems played a role in furthering thefruits holiday fame. Until the trans-continental railroad changed the faceof America, shipping oranges fromCalifornia and Arizona was diffi cultand expensive. While some areasreceived many oranges, other regionshad few, making an orange in thestocking a special Christmas indul-

gence. Most importantly, oranges wereone of the few fresh fruits availableduring the winter before global trade, making them a sweet treat during theholiday season, cheering up the chillywinter with a little sunshine in thestocking. Te childrens book An Or-ange for Frankie tells the story of the

authors Depression-era family andits Christmas tradition of providinga single orange for each of the ninechildren.

The Orange RitualTough nowhere mandated, author

Jayne Cohen, Jewish Holiday Cook-ing (Wiley, 2008), says oranges havea place at Jewish holidays for manyreasons. During the Middle Ages, some

Jews began growing citrus to provideJewish communities with citron forSukkot, their fall harvest holiday. Jewsin Spain, Portugal and other Sephardicommunities in the Diaspora becamefond of the fruit and orange juice, which was particularly popular at Pass-over. Cohen says it was used to flavorflourless nut tortes and sponge cakesand was a perfect substitute for milk.

Oranges are also popular during uBShevat, the New Year for rees, whenits customary to plant trees and eatfruits found in Israel.

Golden WealthIn their Asian homeland, oranges

still make a splash in holiday celebra-tions and culture. From family reunionsto the Chinese New Year, the fresh fruit

    makes an appearance.

According to Ina Asim, associ-ate professor in Asian studies at theUniversity of Oregon, the goldencolor stands for wealth and prosperity, making an orange a popular gift-giv-ing item. Te round shape stands forunity, which is particularly importantto remember during holidays and

other family gatherings, she says.Te sound of the word for orange isvery similar to the Chinese word forwealth.

Creative PossibilitiesOranges rich color and scent en-

hance any celebration. Consider usinga basket of oranges as a decoration orcenterpiece to offer luck to your familyand guests as they enter your home.Navel oranges return into season inNovember, with Cara Cara and Morooranges plentiful in December. Dryorange slices and use them to embellishplatters, wreaths and other decorations.Carve out oranges to make fresh tealights for the table and create a color-ful centerpiece with traditional orangepomanders.

It starts out as a routine event: Every yearyou dig out those holiday decorations, withthe intent to systematically turn your home

into a tasteful winter wonderland. But thingsspiral downward quickly, and before you knowit youre crying in the middle of an evergreen

war zone, where your children are assaultingeach other with Grandmas antique ornamentsand the cat is adorned with more tangled lightsthan the tree.

Its amazing how many people make(holiday decorating) complicated, saysStandolyn Robertson, president of the Na-tional Association of Professional Organiz-ers. If we can get people to think simpleand sophisticated rather than over the top,

they can set themselves up for a stress-freeholiday.

Top CleanA clean home is really important, so that

you start with a blank palette, says PatriciaGaylor, an interior designer in Little Falls, N.J.According to Julie Edelman, author of TeUltimate Accidental Housewife: Your Guide toa Clean Enough House (Hyperion, 2008), fo-

cus on cleaning high traffi c and visibility areas,as well as the kitchen and one designated bath-room for guests. If your house is organizedenough, it looks cleaner, so shift and straightenas much as possible, she says.

Use Common ScentsAt the holidays you need to take a breath,

sit back and enjoy, Edelman says, and whatsbetter than breathing in delicious holiday

scents? She creates a scent decoy by bak-ing frozen cookie dough before guests arrive.People think youve been baking for hours, she says. Fresh pine is a great seasonal scent, says Gaylor, who suggests arranging boughs ina stone pitcher.

Organize OrnamentsFor Gaylor, the tree is a very sentimental

addition to the holidays. I can still remember

every single ornament Ive gotten in thepast 35 years, she says. I like to mixthem up and make the tree very per-sonal, and the skirt is an antique quiltthat I own. But if youve amassed quitea collection, Robertson says it may be

time to let go. If youve been collect-ing ornaments over the years, you maywant to think about passing them onto the kids and downsizing, she says, noting that no matter how many youhave, its important to organize yourornaments so that theyre stored prop-erly and youre only using things thatyou love.

Go Lean on the LightsI think people sometimes get toointo outside lights, because they alwaysdid them and they think they haveto continue to do them, Robertsonsays. Ten it becomes a burden. Asimple lighted bow is elegant and justenough.

And what about indoor lights? Youdont have to have lights on trees, Edel-

man says. Going without them cutsdown on energy use, and you can useshiny garland instead.

Play FootsieEdelman avoids the awkward messy-

shoe conversation at get-togethers witha unique and fun twist. When peoplewalk in, have a basket filled with holidaysocks your guests can put on, she sug-

gests. It makes a nice little gift.

Center Your EffortsCenterpieces are great, and it

doesnt mean you have to go out andspend tons on fresh flowers, Edelmansays. Fill glass bowls with anythingfrom marshmallows to red and greennacho chips to candy canes. Gaylorlikes to fill simple bowls with pinecones

or silver balls, and says that silver orna-ments flanked by silver candlesticks andcandles can be elegant and easy.

Fan the FlamesYou can never have enough

candles, Gaylor says. Even if its thosefake ones that look so real thoseon a mantle with some greenery lacedbetween them are gorgeous. Gaylor saysyou can add quick elegance for partiesby using tea lights grouped around theroom, and Edelman notes that candle-light can save energy as well.

Liven UpI like to take my cues from nature

and use elements in the home that arenatural and relate to the season, likespruce and greenery, Gaylor says.

Ill use anything I can fill withpine cones or crab apples or lady apples theyre bright red with some yel-low and you can put little pieces ofpine boughs between the apples and itlooks very beautiful. Live boughs onthe mantle or table are inexpensive, andRobertson says they add a simple andsophisticated festive touch.

Make It A Family AffairDont take all of the holiday

decorating upon yourself. Robertsonsays it should always be a family event.Involve hot chocolate or wassail and

make it a day of decorating and fun,she suggests.Edelman hosts BYOB (Bring Your

Own Bulb) parties, inviting neighborsand friends for a tree-decorating party.Give yourself a break, she says. Enjoyyour family and friends and enjoy theholidays, because thats really whattheyre all about.

CChristmas trees strung with col-ored lights and covered in or-naments and other trinkets arestaples of the holiday season. Finding theperfect tree and decorating it is as mucha Christmas tradition as egg nog and badgifts from distant aunts and uncles.

Tere is much debate over whattree is better artificial or real butthe fact of the matter remains that anartificial tree will not provide the aromaor experience a real tree can offer.

Before you go out shopping at

your tree farm or just up the corner atthe Christmas tree lot, first measure

the openings of your home and thespace where you will set up your tree.A tree out in the open, or beneath the12-foot ceilings of a warehouse storewill look small. But when that sametree is brought into your home, it canbe immense. A measuring tape canhelp remove any doubt about the treesdimensions.

freshest. If youre cutting the tree downyourself at a farm, its easy to determinethe trees vitality. However, it may notbe so apparent at a tree lot where treesmay have been sitting around sinceright after Tanksgiving. Consider thesepointers when choosing a tree:

Fir trees tend to hold to their

needles even when they start to dry out, making them ideal Christmas trees.

Examine the tree you like carefully.A good one will look healthy, be vibrantgreen and have a strong pine aroma.

If the tree has dry, brittle twigs,a musty smell or any sign of dryness orbrowning, you probably want to chooseanother as this one is past its prime.

Look for a tree with strong

branches to hold ornaments.Te needles should be soft and flex-

ible. Tey should not fall off easily if yourun your hand over boughs of the tree.

Remember, a healthy tree can last sev-eral weeks if it is brought indoors freshlycut and maintained with regular watering.

Be sure to shake the tree out beforeyou transport it home. Tis will loosenany dead branches and needles, which

will make a mess of your car and home.

Most tree lots and farms will wrap thetree in netting so that it stays condensedand portable for the trip home. ie itsecurely so you dont end up with anairborne tree on the roads home, whichhas happened to many people. Also, besure to cut off an inch to two inches ofthe trunk off to promote good water

    absorption later on.

When the tree is home, carefullybring it indoors (those door measure-ments will come in handy now). Makesure that your tree stand will fit thecircumference of the trees trunk. Donot shave the sides of the trunk to getit to fit or you risk compromising howlong the tree will last.

A cut tree first can absorb as much

as 1 gallon of water 24 hours after it iscut. After that the general rule is that atree needs approximately one quart ofwater per inch of trunk diameter. Add-ing special mixes to the water will nothelp it last any longer.

By following these tips you can en-sure you have a beautiful and healthy tree

to enjoy for the duration of the season.

Keep away from heat: Make sure the tree is kept away fromsources of heat, such as heating vents, fireplaces (keep a reason-able distance away from flames), and even sources of direct sun-light so the tree can remain healthy.

Ward off all pets: Cats, in particular, have exhibited a puzzlingdesire to jump into Christmas trees. If you cant keep pets out of theroom entirely, use a ceiling hook to keep the tree from falling overshould a pet bump into it.

Turn lights off when leaving the house or going to bed: Treesare a fire hazard even when the lights arent on, and that risk onlygets greater if lights are left on when youre not home.

Place heavier ornaments near the top: Keep heavier andfragile ornaments higher up on the tree to lessen the risk of thembreaking at the hands of curious kids.

and Its Ornaments Last Through the Season

    y g g , , y, ,

Festive is the typical mood ofthe holidays. While the seasoncertainly has its stressful mo-ments as well, many realize that suchmoments are fleeting and approach theseason in good spirits.

As many people know, however, some are inclined to spend the holi-

days celebrating a little too much. Itsno secret, for example, that Americashighways are never as dangerous andpeople more accident prone than duringthe holiday season. Many find the mostheartbreaking part of many alcohol-re-lated crashes are the innocent victims.Oftentimes, drunk or impaired driverscrash into law-abiding motorists.

Te heightened number of drug- or

alcohol-related accidents during the holi-days only underscore the importance formotorists to be more aware during thisfestive season. With the roadways oftenbusy with shoppers and revelers alike, adhering to the following tips can be thesafest way for motorists to keep them-selves and their families safe this season.

    Dont Drink and Drive

If you have consumed any alcohol, call a cab. Even if youve had just onedrink and feel perfectly capable of driv-ing, that one drink might have impairedyour driving at least somewhat. Play itsafe and take a taxi whenever youve hadany alcohol, even if you only had onedrink. Fully aware that drunk drivingaccidents increase during the holidays, police forces across the country set up

checkpoints to ensure all drivers aresober. Avoid any potential problems bysimply calling a ride whenever youvehad any alcohol.

Be AlertPay close attention and know where

youre going. Even if a light is green, pay close attention to the intersection asyou approach. Just because youre aware

the light is green, that doesnt mean apotentially impaired driver or pedestriancrossing your lane knows that. Be sureto closely examine an intersection as youapproach to safeguard you and thoseyoure traveling with from anyone whomight be running a red light, particu-larly if youre driving later at night.

Its also important to travel with direc-tions on hand. Te more you drive duringthe holiday season, the more susceptibleyou become to an accident. In addition, ifyou dont know where youre going, youremore inclined to drive aimlessly and notbe as attentive as you could be.

Buckle UpMake sure everyone is buckled up.

Simply put, there is never a good excuseto travel in a car without wearing a seatbelt. In a study titled Association ofDriver Air Bags with Driver Fatality, seatbelts were found to be more effective atreducing the risk of death than air bags.Seat belts were shown to reduce the riskof death by 65 percent, while air bagsreduce the risk by 8 percent. Much ofthe risk that comes with driving involves

relying on how well the strangers sharingthe road with you drive. By wearinga seat belt at all times, youre greatlyreducing the chance other drivers canfatally harm you.

Obey the Speed LimitTe holidays are a busy time of year,

and nearly everyone on the road is ina hurry to get somewhere. However,

speeding is not only against the law,but potentially very dangerous as well.Obey the speed limit at all times. Whenspeeding, its easy to lose control of yourvehicle should a fellow motorist beginswerving or driving erratically. Defensivedriving should be practiced at all times, but even more so during the holidayseason, when motorists cannot predictwith whom theyre sharing the road.

Planning a party is always acombination of anticipation andanxiety. No matter how fun and

celebratory the occasion, there is alwaysthe possibility of something not goingquite right. Murphys Law goes intoovertime during the holidays, whenwhat can go wrong at a party gener-

ally does, accelerated by fatigue, familyfeuds and high-octane holiday cheer.

You might be able to control (andthus prevent) some of the commongaffes, such as falling souffl s andrunning out of white wine. But youcant predict or control your guestsbad behavior. You can, however - and,of course, should - mitigate damagesby your reactions. Below are some

real-world party mishaps followed bywise advice from seasoned hosts andparty-planning experts on what to dowhen your good guests go bad. Beingprepared for the misbehavior of others,be it unintentional or otherwise, canhelp turn a potential party disaster intofuture funny cocktail party banter.

So, from the so-bad-its-true files(names have been withheld to protect

    the guilty):

The Picky EaterOne Colorado woman remembers

guests who called the day before Christ-

mas to say theyd be bringing their own

food to her dinner, because they didnt

eat certain foods. Te news threw the

    hostess lovingly planned menu into

chaos. Te hostess says she would havebeen more than happy to accommodatetheir diets in advance, but was sad andangry to see her plans (and meal) go towaste.

Hostess with the Most-ess: ake theinitiative. When you issue invites, ask if

anyone has any allergies or other dietary

restrictions. Tis will allow you to ac-commodate serious requests in advanceand discourage last-minute pickiness.

The CrasherGuests may bring uninvited chil-

dren, other guests and even pets to yourparty, despite invites (or what youve

done with your own pets and kids).Hostess with the Most-ess: You have

to roll with it, once the added membersof the party are at your party. Tis is agreat argument to always overstock andovercook; you can always have leftovers, says Donatella Arpaia, the New York en-tertaining and food guru. Having a teenwho is willing to volunteer for babysit-ting duty can help if those with kids

bring their offspring to an adults-onlyfunction. When it comes to those whocannot travel without Fido, directionsto the nearest kennel may be your onlyoption.

The Savvy Hostesss Must-Do ListDont Plan Any Party Without Taking These 3 Steps

Have a backup planPlanning on Uncle Albert making a special toast when you are

together for the holidays, but worried that he might have one hottoddy too many? Select a back-up person for the toast, so itll

look seamless even if you have to switch gears.

Enlist helpEven if you cant hire a caterer or party-planner, dont try to do

it all yourself. Find friends or family who can pitch in. That way, ifyou have to go put out a fire (literal or figurative) theres someoneelse to keep a watch on the stove.

Have funNo matter what happens, its just a party. Even the worst party

disaster isnt a matter of life and death. Learn to laugh with it.

A North Carolina woman has an ac-quaintance who is a bra fitter. She car-ries samples in different sizes with herand takes every opportunity - includingparties - to check with women to seeif their bras are fitting correctly. If not,she tries to sell them bras.

Hostess with the Most-ess: Beingblunt is OK in this situation; you needto protect your other guests from the

    unwanted sales pitch.

The DrunkardUncle Ed sometimes tries to go

one-for-one with the college kidswho are playing billiards and drink-ing beer in the basement but canthold his liquor like he used to. Soundfamiliar?

    Hostess with the Most-ess: Erica

Maurer, a partner and co-owner of

EMRG Media and Mantra, a New Yorkevent-planning firm and restaurant, has run into this problem when a CEOtries to keep up with younger employ-ees at the offi ce party. Shes learnedto gingerly ask to talk to the CEO inanother room, ostensibly about somekind of business, and then, once inprivate, offer coffee, water, whatever isneeded, so that he isnt embarrassed infront of the crowd. ry this tactic ratherthan calling your uncle to task in frontof everyone.

The Night OwlEveryone has had the guests who

just wont go home. Subtle hints like

turning off the music, doing the dishes, putting the kids to bed and even chang-ing into pajamas arent clear enoughsignals for some people.

Hostess with the Most-ess: Somesavvy hostess have had success mak-ing jokes about having to kick theirfriends out. A coy, Honey, weve keptthese folks up long enough. Its time tolet them get to bed, might also work.
