Red Deer Rebels netminders Taz Burman and Rylan Toth are like young actors taking over for the likes of Hugh Jackman in a hit Broadway play.

Burman and Toth are replacing a big name in the person of Patrik Barto-sak, the much-decorated stopper who has moved on to the pro ranks with the Los Angeles Kings organization.

The fresh-faced duo fully realize exactly who they’re following, but nei-ther is intimidated by the notion of being the men between the pipes this season.

“We just have to be ourselves, we can’t try to be Patrik Bartosak Part 2,” said Burman, who appeared in 17 games last season as Bartosak’s understudy. “That’s not our job, our job is to be the best we can be. Patty was a great goalie, there’s no doubt about that and everyone knows that. But now I’m trying to be a great goalie and be myself, and that’s all I can do.”

Toth, who posted a 2.42 goals-against average and .923 save percentage in 16 regular-season game with the midg-et AAA Battleford Stars last season, hasn’t seen Bartosak as often as Bur-man but knows all about the Czech netminder.

The 18-year-old, however, offered an interesting perspective on the situ-ation, pointing out that Bartosak was in a similar spot when he followed cur-rent Minnesota Wild netminder Darcy Kuemper into the Rebels net three years ago.

“Yeah, we have big shoes to fill, but he (Bartosak) came into the same type of situation,” said Toth, “Everybody has to start somewhere.”

Burman struggled somewhat at times last season, particularly down the homestretch. But there’s a reason

he was selected by the Rebels in the second round of the 2012 bantam draft and the Vancouver native worked hard during the off-season to make sure he can live up to his potential this winter and in the future.

“I spent a lot of time in the gym just trying to get stronger and a little bit bigger. I wanted to put on a bit of weight, which I did, and that was im-portant because I’m naturally not a big guy,” said the six-foot-one, 170-pound netminder. “I added to my strength and also worked on my quickness with off-ice workouts. Getting quicker was

the biggest thing. “I feel good now, I’m

ready to go and it’s an exciting time.”

Toth, who recorded a 2.59 GAA and .914 save percentage in nine midget AAA play-off games last spring, worked out five days a week during the sum-mer.

“I made sure I was eating right and taking care of my body, and I also skated quite a bit just to stay on the ice

and keep improving,” he said. The Rebels’ puck-stopping pair

work well together.“I really like Rylan. We’re really

good friends and that’s great,” said Burman.

“There’s only two goalies on a team and not all of the guys understand what you go through mentally and stuff, so it’s really important to have a good re-lationship with the other goalie. which Rylan and I have.”

Toth agreed, adding: “We get along really well and challenge each other every day in practice. And after prac-tice, we’re great friends.”

If Burman has an advantage over his teammate, it’s the one winter of major junior seasoning that he has under his belt.

“No doubt being here last year will help me this season,” he said. “The first year is always a bit of an adjust-ment period. The calibre of play is so

good, so fast, and then there’s just the whole thing of being away from home.

“Now I feel older and more comfort-able, which is definitely a good thing and can do nothing but help me.”

Toth flourished at the midget AAA level last winter despite feeling he had progressed beyond that point when he was reassigned by the Rebels after at-tending training camp a year ago.

“It was tough going back to midget because I felt that I was kind of done with that level at that point,” he said. “But it was good to kind of take a step back and look at what I needed to do to improve.

“We didn’t really have a goalie coach there (Battleford), although (Rebels goaltender coach) Taylor Dak-ers did work with me at times and helped me some during the season. I just kept working hard at practice ev-ery day, working on the things I needed to work on.”

So far, so good.“The difference between last year

and this year is that I felt a lot more comfortable in training camp and through the exhibition games,” said Toth.

“I felt more confident and I think that showed. I felt I did really well for the most part.”

Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter is confident that Burman and Toth can carry the club’s goaltending torch this winter.

“They’re pretty even-keeled, they’re good teammates and they work hard in practice,” said Sutter. “What I like about it is it’s a competitive environ-ment with them, but in a very positive way.

“They just have to be themselves. They’re both young goalies who are going to be good goalies. We just have to be patient with them and they’ll be fine. Burman was a second-round pick for a reason and we really liked Tother’s development over the last two years.”

Goaltender Taz Burman, in black, and Rylan Toth will be between the pipes this season for the Red Deer Rebels. Both goalies know they have big shoes to fill after Patrik Bartosak’s departure. But instead of following in his footsteps, they hope to make their own marks with the Rebels.

‘PATTY WAS A GREAT GOALIE, THERE’S

NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT AND EVERYONE

KNOWS THAT. BUT NOW I’M TRYING TO BE A GREAT GOALIE

AND BE MYSELF, AND THAT’S ALL I CAN DO.’

As the newest member of the Red Deer Rebels coaching staff, Clayton Beddoes harbours an old-fashioned sense of excitement.

In fact, the Rebels skills and development coach is convinced he’ll get as much out of the job as the players he’s been hired — on a part-time basis — to teach.

“I’m finding my way in a bit of a different role than I’ve had as a coach. I’m certainly excited about

it, though,” said Beddoes, following a recent practice session at the Enmax Centrium. “One of the same things you get excited about as a coach, no matter what level you’re at, is that you can help individual players and see an improvement in a player over a year, and that’s what my reward is going to be.”

Beddoes, a carpenter by trade, will attend prac-tices and home games this season. As a result, he’s watched his students perform in game conditions just once — during a 5-3 preseason win over the Edmonton Oil Kings Sept. 12 — and came away im-pressed.

“I’ve only seen one game but I did see a lot of raw talent,” he said.

“There’s so much potential and a lot is going to depend on almost every player and what kind of character they have and what their practice habits are. These guys have God-given abilities, that’s how they got here. Now it’s just a matter of helping them develop those abilities and habits.”

A native of Bentley, Beddoes was a star forward with the old Red Deer Rustlers in the late 1980s be-fore taking his act to the SJHL and the Weyburn Red Wings.

He earned a U.S. college scholarship while in Weyburn and won two NCAA championships during his four years at Lake Superior State.

Beddoes signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent in 1994 and played a total of 60 games in the NHL, scoring twice and collecting 10 points.

He also played in the American and International leagues and closed out his playing career over four seasons in Germany and Italy. He retired in 2001 and two years later was back in Germany as an assistant coach with the Cologne Sharks.

Beddoes also served as a head coach with the Sharks and Frankfurt Lions, before taking over as bench boss in Cortina, Italy, for the 2012-13 season. It was his last coaching job until Rebels general man-ager/head coach Brent Sutter offered him a post with the Western Hockey League team.

In Europe, Beddoes was coaching professionals, most of whom were five to 10 years older than the players he’s now instructing. He doesn’t see that as a hindrance as he becomes more comfortable with his new position.

“I’ve coached lots of younger players, 18- and 19-year-olds,” he said. “But coaching younger instead of older players leaves more room for the reward. In an older player, you’ve pretty much got what you’ve got. Now you have to find his role and play him where he’s going to contribute the most.

“With young players, they haven’t fulfilled their potential yet, so you’re able to help them become the players maybe they thought they could be.

“There’s a lot of raw talent here and I’m really looking forward to working with what seems like a great group of young men and a top-notch coaching staff.”

The presence of Sutter, associate coach Jeff Truitt, assistant Steve O’Rourke and goaltender coach Tay-

lor Dakers was instrumental in Beddoes pursuing the skills development position.

“That was part of the motivation for me to come here and coach. I’m not doing it for the money, I’m doing it to be around the game and be around these guys and — from a selfish standpoint — to learn from the coaches who are here,” said Beddoes.

“They have a wealth of experience. I’ve been working (as a coach) by myself for the last four to five years and it’s nice to hear some of the same words that I’ve been using and also hear some different words regarding tactics and things like that. For my-self, there’s also some skill and development that I’m gaining as a coach.”

Beddoes’ casual ties to Sutter helped land him his current gig.

COACH: Connection“I’ve known Brent for a long time,”

said Beddoes. “I have a close enough relationship with him to be able to call him or email him once in awhile, and it was always in the back of my mind to do something with the Rebels. I’m very fortunate that I have a connection with Brent and also a bit of a connec-tion with Steve, who I knew before, and Jeff, who I got to know during the spring and summer.

“For me to be here and be able to integrate through the season . . . I feel very fortunate. A lot of guys would have loved to have the opportunity. A lot of it is connections and knowing people.”

Beddoes will be in the Centrium press box taking notes when the Reb-els open their regular-season schedule tonight against the Kootenay Ice.

“Practice is one thing, it’s in the games that you really see what a guy needs to work on,” he said. “You get to see how the training is affecting how he plays and make the adjustments, if necessary.

“It’s also important for me to be watching the games in the sense that I have to integrate some of the tactics into skill and development, too. I can’t be teaching something that’s not with-in the system or the coaching philoso-phy that Brent follows.

“This is going to be a feeling-out process for both Brent and myself. This is a level I’ve never coached at, but it’s a win-win situation, no one has anything to lose. If it doesn’t work out, he certainly has a competent coaching staff. Whatever evolves, no one is go-ing to get hurt and everyone is going to benefit.” Beddoes’ hockey travels have taken him from Central Alberta to the U.S. and Europe and now back home. “It seems to work like that a lot,” he said. “The hockey world is small and things often come full circle.”

THE FRONT-RUNNERSCalgary HitmenThe Hitmen return the vast majority

of the team that last season finished tied — with Edmonton — for the most points in the conference and the re-turnees include LW Jake Virtanen and RW Greg Chase, likely to be among the WHL’s top scorers this winter . . . The club has a nice problem in the over-age department with forwards Mike Winther, Adam Tambellini and Con-nor Rankin, and D Kenton Helgesen. Any combination of the three will give the Hitmen arguably the league’s best group of 20-year-olds . . . Travis San-heim and Ben Thomas tie down the back end and Mack Shields, 20-3-0 as a back-up last season, is ready to assume starting goalie duties . . . The Hitmen are for real.

Swift Current BroncosThe Broncos boast a handful of

proven scoring forwards in Jay Merk-ley (34G,32A last season) and overag-ers Coda Gordon and Colby Cave, both of whom reached 70 points last win-ter. The real strength of the club is on the blueline, perhaps the league’s best while boasting the likes of first-rounder Julius Honka and fellow NHL draft picks Dillon Heatherington, Brett Lernout and Brycen Martin . . . A ques-tion mark looms in goal, where Landon Bow replaces effective Finnish stop-per Eetu Laurikainen . . . The Broncos, plain and simple, are contenders.

Brandon Wheat KingsThe Wheat Kings boast perhaps the

best young talent in the entire league and there’s nothing wrong with their cast of veteran players, either. C Nolan Patrick and D Kale Clague are the most

highly-touted of this season’s group of rookies, while D Eric Roy (Calgary Flames) RW Peter Quenneville (Co-lumbus Blue Jackets) and Czech LW Richard Nejezchleb (NY Rangers) are all in pro camps, but are unsigned by their NHL teams. LW Rihards Bu-karts (28G, 26A last season), is another offensive weapon, as are 2014 NHL draft picks C John Quenneville and RW Jayce Hawryluk . . . The Wheaties will be contenders this season but are likely a year away from realizing their full potential.

Medicine Hat TigersThe Tigers should match last sea-

son’s fourth-place finish in the con-ference if overage G Marek Langham-er returns from the Arizona Coyotes camp and a small but skilled group of forwards led by C Trevor Cox contin-ues to progress . . . Tommy Vannelli, who’s eligible to play in the AHL since he was drafted out of college, would be another large piece of the puzzle, although the team has a fine back end — anchored by Tyler Lewington — re-gardless . . . Langhamer and C Markus Eisenschmid are the imports . . . The Tigers should be good enough to host an opening-round playoff series in their final season in the old Arena.

IN THE MIXRed Deer RebelsAn improved blueline — in terms

of puck-moving talent and mobility — should help the club qualify for the playoffs while limiting the shots on goal against second-year G Taz Bur-man and rookie sidekick Rylan Toth. Burman and Toth are replacing argu-ably the league’s top stopper in Pa-trik Bartosak, so the spotlight will be

on the duo . . . The Rebels narrowly missed the playoffs last season but ap-peared re-energized during a decent preseason . . . Red Deer’s outright studs are first-round NHL draft picks C Conner Bleackley and D Haydn Fl-eury and there’s a fine supporting cast with forwards Adam Musil, Grayson Pawlenchuk, among others.

Edmonton Oil KingsThe Oil Kings lost a large group of

key players to graduation and the pro ranks, including LW Mitch Moroz, D Griffin Reinhart and C Henrik Samu-elsson, and may lose C Curtis Lazar, 19, to the Ottawa Senators . . . Luckily, Tristan Jarry is the best netminder in the conference and there’s enough tal-ent both up front and on the back end

to keep the club in the post-season hunt . . . The roster turnover, though, makes it unlikely that the Oil Kings will make another championship run.

Kootenay IceThe Ice will almost certainly lose

go-to C Sam Reinhart to the Buffalo Sabres, but still have some offensive weapons in the persons of RW Jaedon Descheneau and C Luke Philp . . . Tan-ner Faith anchors a decent blueline and G MacKenzie Skapski will be a big piece of the squad if he doesn’t stick with the New York Rangers’ AHL af-filiate in Hartford . . . There’s nothing fancy here, but Kootenay hasn’t missed the playoffs in 16 straight years and

EAST: Offensive weaponsKootenay IceThe Ice will almost certainly lose go-to C Sam

Reinhart to the Buffalo Sabres, but still have some offensive weapons in the persons of RW Jaedon De-scheneau and C Luke Philp.

Tanner Faith anchors a decent blueline and G MacKenzie Skapski will be a big piece of the squad if he doesn’t stick with the New York Rangers’ AHL affiliate in Hartford.

There’s nothing fancy here, but Kootenay hasn’t missed the playoffs in 16 straight years and should be there again next spring.

Prince Albert RaidersThe Raiders edged out Red Deer for the final

playoff berth last spring but that was with the sub-stantial aid of 20-year-old LW Collin Valcourt and C Leon Draisaitl, who will almost certainly start the NHL season with the Oilers and could very well make the club full-time.

If the Raiders also lose outstanding 19-year-old D Josh Morrissey to the Winnipeg Jets, the rebuild will be on and qualifying for the playoffs will be difficult despite the presence of key returnees D Sawyer Lange and C Reid Gardiner.

If Draisaitl and/or Morrissey return, P.A. should make the playoffs.

MAYBE NEXT YEARRegina PatsFormer NHL coach John Paddock has assumed

bench boss duties with the Pats and will be looking for big things from LW Morgan Klimchuk as well as Kyle Burroughs and Colby Williams, the only true veterans on the blueline.

G Daniel Wapple is another key returnee and he’ll play that way to keep the Pats away from the bottom feeders.

The loss of clutch forwards Boston Leier, Dyson Stevenson and Chandler Stephenson, along with re-arguards Jesse Zgraggen and Dmitry Sinitsyn has left Regina with a young squad that’s probably a year away from competing for a playoff spot.

Moose Jaw WarriorsNew head coach Tim Hunter takes over a team

with one true star in C Brayden Point, meaning the revamped offence will need increased production from the likes of overage forwards Tanner Eberle, Jack Rodewald and Jaimen Yakubowski.

An inexperienced defence will mean the goalten-ding tandem of Justin Paulic and Zach Sawchenko will be leaned upon heavily.

Making the playoffs may be a stretch for the War-riors, who finished 10th in the conference last sea-son.

Saskatoon BladesUnder new head coach Bob Woods, the Blades are

expected to make somewhat of a rise in the stand-ings, but after finishing 11th in the conference last season, there’s not a lot of room to regress.

THE FRONT-RUNNERSKelowna RocketsWith a cast of 18 returning players,

the Rockets appear primed to threat-en their 2013-14 record of 57-11-4 and again finish atop of the B.C. Division and Western Conference . . . Madison Bowey anchors a solid blueline and centres Nick Merkley and Rourke Chartier headline a balanced forward group that could have plenty of 20- to 30-goal scorers . . . Jackson Whistle and rookie Jake Morrissey should provide adequate goaltending.

Victoria RoyalsThe Royals bid adieu to some fine

players, including G Patrik Polivka and C Steven Hodges. However, there’s an impressive cast remaining, a group that’s led by forwards Austin Carroll, Tyler Soy and Brandon Magee, defend-ers Keegan Kanzig, Joe Hicketts and Travis Brown, and G Coleman Vollrath, who last season posted a 2.29 GAA and league-best .928 save percentage in 34 games . . . After finishing third in the conference with a team-record 48 wins and posting a franchise-first playoff se-ries victory, the Royals will be looking for more this season.

Portland WinterhawksThe ‘Hawks lost three key rear-

guards in Mathew Dumba, Derek Pouliot and Garrett Haar and there are no replacements of that ilk on the roster. Still, the team has some dynam-ic forwards with Danish RW Oliver Bjorkstrand, Nic Petan, Chase De Leo and Paul Bittner, so scoring will not be a problem . . . One of the new faces is head coach Jamie Kompon, who faces a tough task in replacing former GM/bench boss Mike Johnston . . . Lacombe native and D Josh Smith has made the club as a 20-year-old . . . There are question marks on the blueline and in goal with veteran Brendan Burke, but a dominant offence will have the defending conference champs back among the contenders.

Seattle ThunderbirdsD Shea Theodore and C Matthew

Barzal are among the league’s best at their respective positions and the team currenly harbours five 20-year-olds

— two more than the league limit — with each one, including goalie Taran Kozun, having value. The imports are rookie forwards Alexander True of Denmark and Austrian Florian Bal-tram . . . The T-Birds have an experi-enced defence and young and talented up-front skaters, therefore should be able to challenge for a second-straight top-four finish in the conference.

IN THE MIXEverett SilvertipsThe ‘Tips posted 39 wins in 2013-

14 and then lost four of their top five scorers in LW Joshua Winquist, D Matt Pufahl and C Manraj Hayer, all to graduation, and C Jujhar Khaira to the professional ranks. A strong and expe-rienced blueline anchored by Mirco Mueller and Ben Betker is a huge plus, however, and the goaltending is in find

EAST: BladesRussian RW Nikita Scherbak is the

club’s top player by a country mile and will likely be traded as the Blades con-tinue their rebuild.

Much will be expected from relative newcomers C Wyatt Sloboshan and D Jordan Tompson.

The Blades will be better, but will miss the playoffs again.

Lethbridge HurricanesThe biggest changes the ‘Canes

made during the off-season were the

additions of Peter Anholt as assistant to general manager Brad Robson and Bryan Maxwell as assistant to head coach Drake Berehowsky.

If the club stumbles out of the start-ing gate, which is quite possible, it may be just a matter of time before Anholt and Maxwell are running the show.

What has to change is the poisonous environment that forced the team to move disgruntled players last winter.

Forwards Tyler Wong and Reid Duke are the best of the returning players and G Stuart Skinner will be a league all-star, just not this season.

WEST: In the mix

Everett SilvertipsThe ‘Tips posted 39 wins in 2013-14 and then lost

four of their top five scorers in LW Joshua Winquist, D Matt Pufahl and C Manraj Hayer, all to graduation, and C Jujhar Khaira to the professional ranks.

A strong and experienced blueline anchored by Mirco Mueller and Ben Betker is a huge plus, how-ever.

And the goaltending is in find hands with third-year stopper Austin Lotz, who shed 23 pounds during the off-season to prepare himself for a heavy load.

Still, without more offensive punch, the team might be hard-pressed to match or improve on last year’s fifth-place conference finish.

Tri-City AmericansMike Williamson, hired as head coach during the

off-season after being canned by the Calgary Hitmen, takes over a team with a so-so blueline featuring the likes of stay-at-home specialist Justin Hamonic, a 36-goal scorer Brian Williams up front and one of the league’s top netminders — Eric Comrie — as the last line of defence.

The imports are 17-year-old Russian forwards Vladislav Lukin and Semyon Krasheninnikov.

Comrie will be the key to any Americans’ success.

Prince George CougarsThe Cougars have a top-notch netminder in Ty

Edmonds and an up-and-coming star in C Jansen Harkins.

The club has an adequate mix of scoring, tough-ness and goaltending and will be spurred on by big-ger crowds at the CN Centre this season, thanks to a change in ownership.

A young defence might make for more than a few long nights, but the Cougars should be a playoff team.

Vancouver GiantsQuestion marks abound as Troy Ward takes over

a club that finished seventh in the conference last season.

How will the former Abbotsford Heat (AHL) bench boss handle juniors with his puck-possession schemes and how well will LW Tyler Benson, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft, play?

Vancouver does have some decent veteran pres-ence with C Carter Popoff, RW Jackson Houck and blueliners Mason Geertsen and Arvin Atwal, but the goaltending situation hasn’t been settled.

Making the playoffs will be a strain.

MAYBE NEXT YEARKamloops BlazersThe Blazers were dead last in the Conference in

2014-15 and even with the legendary Don Hay back behind the bench of his hometown team, the forecast doesn’t appear to be much brighter heading into the current campaign.

Forwards Matt Needham, Cole Ully and Matt Revel will provide much of the scoring and D Ryan Rehill brings toughness.

As former Kamloops Daily News sports editor

Gregg Drinnan suggested, the Blazers are coming off the worst season in franchise history and while they’ll be better this season, it will be an uphill struggle to make the playoffs.

Spokane ChiefsAfter racking up 40 wins and placing sixth in the

conference last season, the Chiefs are most likely en-tering a stage of decline due to the loss of WHL scor-

ing leader Mitch Holmberg and 38-goal sniper Mike Aviani to graduation.

In addition, 56-assist D Reid Gow chose not to re-turn to the club, as did D Jeremy McIntosh, while LW Carter Proft signed with a German team and G Eric Williams took his 39-19-2-2 record into graduation.

Unless new legs rise to the challenge, it will be a long season for the Chiefs.

BY BRAD BROWN

PRAIRIE POST

Tyler Steenbergen has always en-joyed the big games. All the better if they come with the chance to needle a good friend on a daily basis.

That’s what happened last season when Steenbergen’s Red Deer Chiefs beat Cole Johnson’s Lloydminster Bob-cats in the Alberta Midget AAA Hock-ey League final.

Six months later, both players are itching to make their WHL debuts with the Swift Current Broncos, and at least one of them is probably looking for-ward to finally having something else to talk about.

“Winning was a great feeling, espe-cially beating Cole,” said Steenbergen. “We’re pretty good buddies so there’s been quite a bit of joking going back and forth about it . . . or when someone

brings it up I always just look over at Cole and he’ll just shake his head.”

Steenbergen and Johnson were the Broncos’ first two picks of the 2013 WHL bantam draft, 12th and 34th over-all, and came into camp with strong post-draft resumes. Johnson was sec-ond in the Alberta league with 28 goals and fifth with 45 points last season, part of a Lloydminster team that also included top Brandon prospect Kale Clague and had five players among the league’s top 22 point-getters.

“Against him it’s kind of a pain be-cause he’s one of those guys likes to get in your grill,” said Steenbergen. “He’s a skilled player but he’ll grind it out and be really rough to play against.”

Steenbergen also cracked the league’s top 30 scorers, and finished fourth on the Chiefs with 31 points in 32 games.

SKILLED: Knows how to play

It was in the playoffs where Steen-bergen really shone with 11 points in 11 games, including five points in the four-game championship series.

“He’s a hard guy to play against,” said Johnson. “But playing with him, he’s awesome. He really knows how to play the game. He’ll do anything to help his team win and even though he’s a little smaller he’s not afraid to get down in the dirty areas either.”

Despite the pre-season injuries to Johnson (shoulder) and Steenbergen (suspected concussion), early reviews from the coaching staff have been just as glowing.

“They’re both very smart players, really mature beyond their years,” said Broncos head coach Mark Lamb. “What I’m seeing so far, Steenbergen is an all-around player, one of those guys who can put up numbers and play against the best players. But he’s also smart enough to check, he can play wing, he’s just very versatile.

“An Johnson is like that a little bit too but he has a lot more fire to his

game. He’s a very aggressive player who can really use that to make a dif-ference.”

In one way they already have. The Broncos re-assigned five players ear-lier this month, including two-year vet-eran Justin Spagrud.

The Broncos’ hand was forced by the inspired play of some new faces in camp, including Steenbergen and Johnson, Luca Leone, Andreas Schu-macher and Tyler Adams.

There could be more veteran casu-alties too as the Broncos are expected to enter the season with 16 forwards on their roster, but will eventually pare down to 13 or 14.

“Lamb’s been preaching a lot how no veterans have a secure spot on this team,” said Steenbergen. “Obviously there’s a couple that are there, but as you’ve heard ... it’s a very competitive camp and nobody’s a for sure.”
