Krys Kolanos, the Heat’s leading scorer during the regular season, was unstoppable during Abbotsford’s fi rst-round series with the Milwaukee Admirals.

The veteran forward racked up eight points (four goals, four assists) to lead the Heat to the fi rst series sweep in franchise history.

“Krys is a money player,” Heat head coach Troy Ward analyzed. “He always wants to be on the ice when the game’s on the line . . . He feels like he can change the outcome of the game.

“The big thing about Krys versus a lot of guys at this level is, you’ll fi nd a lot of guys aren’t really sure they want to be out there when things are kind of hairy. But Krys always wants to be out there.”

The second round has been tougher sledding for Kolanos, as the Toronto Marlies have limited him to just one assist over the fi rst three games.

Journeyman goalie Danny Taylor (pic-tured above) has suited up for 12 different teams since turning pro in 2006, but he’s found a home in Abbotsford.

With Leland Irving, the Heat’s 2010-11 MVP, spending much of the campaign up with the Calgary Flames, Taylor stepped in and performed admirably. And with Irving unavailable at the end of the regular season due to the birth of his fi rst child, Taylor sparked the team on a winning streak that netted the No. 4 seed in the Western Con-ference.

When the playoffs began, it was Taylor who got the nod, and he came through with fl ying colours, backstopping the Heat to four straight wins.

Taylor stumbled in Game 2 of the second round against Toronto, allowing four goals, prompting Ward to give Irving a shot in Game 3. But the 26-year-old goalie has made a strong case for a contract next season.

Max Reinhart joined the Heat at the tail end of the regular season, after his junior campaign with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice wrapped up, and he wasted little time mak-ing an impact.

The 20-year-old centre made his pro de-but in the regular-season fi nale against the Marlies, and scored two goals.

He was a healthy scratch early in the play-offs, but distinguished himself in Game 1 of the second round against Toronto. Reinhart led the Heat to a 3-1 victory, notching a goal and an assist to go with a team-high fi ve shots on net and a +2 rating.

“The one thing about Max is, he fi nds himself to always be in positions to make an impact on the game,” Ward said.

“We’ve seen him now, in a short amount of time, score some goals at this level, and that’s not by coincidence. That has to do with his hockey intelligence.”

Troy Ward’s impressive work in his fi rst season at the helm of the Heat has earned him signifi cant buzz as a candidate for NHL head-coaching openings.

The Calgary Flames, the Heat’s NHL parent club, are among those in search of a new bench boss after parting ways with Brent Sutter. General manager Jay Feaster has lavished praise on Ward for his work in Abbotsford, and confi rmed he’ll be consid-ered for the vacancy.

Ward led the Heat to a franchise-record 42 victories during the regular season – all the more noteworthy considering the AHL trimmed its schedule from 80 to 76 games this year.

Abbotsford’s 11-game winning streak running from the end of the regular season into the playoffs was also a team record, and it’s clear the Heat have taken on the character of their even-keel, process-orient-ed head coach.

CALDER CUPCALDER CUPPLAYOFFS

In each edition of the Abbotsford News's Faceoff magazine, beat reporter Dan Kinvig chats with head coach Troy Ward about the state of the team.

We spoke with Ward last Saturday, prior to Game 3 of the Heat's second-round match-up with the Toronto Marlies.

Q The playoffs are a productive period for player development, and I imagine it's also a growth opportunity for coaches. How do you learn and grow at this time of year?

A “It’s about managing your bench a little bit differently than you do in the regular season. You’ve got to be more aware of match-ups and in-game situations.

“Obviously, for us, I’ve talked all year about how we’re going to develop players, and we’re going to move players in and out of the lineup. But at the same time, now in the development stage that’s going on, you have to understand who’s your bread and butter in a game, and who’s giving you chances to be successful and who’s not allowing you to be successful. And so you become a little bit shorter (on the bench) at different times of the game, and you

have to be a little more aware of instead of throwing them over the boards, so to speak, it has to have a little more method to the madness at this time of year.

“Match-ups become more important. But they became more important in early March for us, because we were trying to get ourselves into a playoff spot. The last fi ve years I’ve been in this league, the play-

offs usually start in early March. That’s how it’s been for our team.”

“But you’ve also got to be a good enough coach to realize that you can’t get too hung up on that (match-ups). Sometimes you’ve just got to let boys be boys – let them play and let them grow up.”

Q Your team got off to a great start in the playoffs. What's

pleased you most about how the team has gone about its business?

A "I think we've been prepared, in terms of coming out and generating a good start to our games. For fi ve games in a row here now, we've been really good out of the gates. We're 4-1 in the playoffs, and we haven't really put ourselves in a (bad) spot.

"I'm happy with that. It's given us a chance to win."

CALDER CUPCALDER CUPPLAYOFFS

Did you know that your Abbotsford Heat is the only professional hockey team still playing playoff hockey this side of Toronto? Our Heat players are in an awesome West/East battle with the Toronto Marlies in the second round of the Calder Cup post-season.

I love playoffs! I was fortunate enough to participate in 113 NHL playoff games. These games were by far the best part of my career. I have personally experienced all of the feelings that our Heat players are experiencing right now. I am thankful for the op-portunity to have been part of a team that experienced the exhilaration of winning the Stanley Cup, and I have experienced the sorrow and agony of putting in endless effort only to come out second best. Obviously our hope for our Heat team is the former feeling, not the latter.

On a related note, I would like to share a short excerpt from a recent letter to the edi-tor written by UFV’s Dr. Alan Cameron:

"Now that the facilities have been built, we should encourage people to attend any and all games, exhibitions and such that use those venues, to help pay the rent. This includes the Abbotsford Heat. Granted, the

team's fi nancial circumstances are unfortu-nate, but if Abbotsford didn't have the Heat, who else is going to occupy the stadium?

"It seems to me that the citizens of the Fraser Valley continue to hold a grudge against the Heat for the politicians' deci-sions, which doesn't seem fair to me. They also seem unwilling to attend games because of their loyalty to the Vancouver

Canucks. I too, am a huge Canuck fan and bleed blue and green when we come so near and yet so far to winning it all. But I believe we can be loyal to the Canucks and still be fans of the Abbotsford Heat, our local team."

Thank you, Alan! You articulate our Heat heartbeat perfectly.

Our deep desire is to have anoth-er 10,000 people from our Abbots-ford community (especially people

who have not yet experienced a Heat game) come out and cheer on your home team this Tuesday and Wednesday night. Our hockey is amazing and our experience is incred-ible. Please call 604-743-4328 or email me directly: [email protected].

When you turn on your tap and clean, safe water comes out, do you ever wonder how it got there or what happens when it goes down the drain? Or why you should care?

“It is oft en said that the ability to provide clean drinking wa-ter and treat sewage is the greatest con-tribution to public health our world has seen,” says Daisy Foster, CEO of BC Water & Waste Asso-ciation. “Yet, in our part of the world, we take for granted that we can simply turn on the tap and clean water gushes out. We forget that we use that same treated water to hose down our driveways and water our lawns. We fl ush our toilets and away it goes along with whatever we put down there.”

She adds, “We make the eff ort to turn out lights to conserve energy, yet we don’t make the connection between energy and water use. Many of us are unaware of the energy that is used to treat and distribute water.”

During Drinking Water Week, May 13 – 19, 2012, BC Water & Waste Association

asks you to “Get to know your H2O.” Th ink about the impact of your everyday ac-tions and how a few simple changes really can make a diff erence.

Have you thought about how much water you can

save by limiting your shower time to fi ve minutes, or by turning off the tap while brushing your teeth? How about by reducing lawn water-ing or raising the level of your lawn

mower blade to cut down on evaporation?

Did you know that what we put down our sink or toilet can have a serious impact on fi sh and the aquatic environment? Detergents, medications, and many other household products end up at wastewater treatment plants where special process-es are required to minimize the impact on the receiving waters. Fats, oils and grease that we put down our drains can oft en cause blockages in sewer lines resulting in costly repairs. During Drinking Water Week, take the time to fi nd out about safer disposal

methods in your area. We invite you to get in-

volved and learn more about your water. Start by tak-ing the Community Water Challenge and pledge to be water wise. By incorporat-ing practical actions into our daily routines, we can make a diff erence.

Visit www.drinkingwater-week.org to fi nd out about Drinking Water Week events in your area, and to down-load activities and education-al resources provided by BC Water & Waste Association.

We need to value our drinking water

Here in BC we often take our tap water for granted, but it is a fi nite resource that we should value and protect.

DRINKING WATER WEEK

Be Water Wise:■ Limit your shower time to 5 minutesper day.■ Install a low-flow fixture or appliance. Look for the WaterSense label on retail shelves across BC. ■ Return unused or expired medications to the pharmacy for proper disposal. ■ Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, shaving and doing dishes.■ Dispose of household wastes such as cleaners, paints and grease responsibly, instead of putting them down your sink or toilet.

Did You Know? ■ 26% of British Columbians have no idea where the water that flows from their tap comes from.*■ The average Canadian uses 329 litres of water per day. However, the average Cana-dian thinks they only use 132 litres per day.* ■ We use up to 50% more water in the summertime when people are watering their lawns and gardens.**

ANSWERS: 1.True: British Columbians use an average of 426 litres of water per day; the average Canadian uses 329 litres of water per day (nearly double what Europeans use!)* 2. False: Never put fats, oils or grease down the drain - when these substances enter our wastewater they can clog pipes and deplete oxygen in the aquatic environment. 3. False: Watering your lawn thoroughly once per week rather than lightly at a greater frequency will strengthen the roots and promote a greener, healthier lawn.

SATURDAYMAY 26 Tips to Conserve & Reserve

• Use a rain barrel.• Lawns only need 1 inch of water every 7

days to stay green in the summer. • Leave grass at least 3 inches long. Longer

grass retains more moisture and requires less watering.

• Use a spring loaded shut-off device on all hoses.

• Use mulch, so water moisture is retained in the soil longer and plants stay cooler in hot weather.

• Use a broom, not the hose, to clean walkways and driveways.

Heat remain upbeat after Game 3 defeatDan KINVIGAbbotsford News

In the wake of a 4-1 home-ice loss to the Toronto Marlies on Saturday evening, the Abbotsford Heat find themselves trailing in a series for the first time in these Calder Cup playoffs.

But don’t expect Troy Ward to reach for the panic button.

In fact, to listen to the Heat head coach talk, he’s not certain as to the location of said button. He may not even be aware of its existence, metaphori-cal though it may be.

Abbotsford has yet to solve the Marlies’ top-

ranked penalty kill in the series – they went 0-for-4 on the power play on Saturday, and are now 0-for-16 over the first three games.

The Heat were also second-best in the

goaltending depart-ment on Saturday, as Ben Scrivens out-dueled Leland Irving, who was making his first start in nearly three weeks and sur-rendered a suspect

goal just 58 secondsinto the game.

But on both fronts,Ward offered spiritedpost-game defences. Heliked Irving’s play “alot,” and he pointed outhe evaluates the powerplay based on the num-ber of scoring chancesgenerated. Ward felt theHeat were much betterin that department onSaturday than they hadbeen in Game 2, whenthey went 0-for-9 withthe man advantage.

“We’re down 2-1 (inthe series), but wefeel awesome,” Wardasserted. “You guys(the media) mightbe a little down, butthere ain’t nobody inthat room down. Weliked our game. Theydidn’t get out of theirend at times, we didsome good things onthe forecheck.

“You’ll find us allenergized on Tuesdayand ready to go (forGame 4). We’re excit-ed. They’re the twoseed – why shouldn’twe be excited? They’rean unbelievable team.We just keep comingat them. We love this(stuff). Seriously. Welove it.”

Irving, who watchedfrom the bench asDanny Taylor startedthe Heat’s first fiveplayoff games, got offto a rough start, as thesecond shot he facedfound the back of thenet. Marlies forwardNazem Kadri did thedeed, sweeping aroundthe net and tucking ina wrap-around.

Matt Frattin doubledToronto’s lead at the11:43 mark of the first. The red-hot Frattin, who has scored in eachof the three games inthe series, stole thepuck from Clay Wilsonin the neutral zone, then swept in and fireda wrist shot from theleft circle that deflect-ed off Heat defenderChris Breen’s stickand went over Irving’sglove.

The Heat got toScrivens early in thesecond, as DustinSylvester tipped inWilson’s point shot atthe 2:21 mark.

The hosts werepressing for more, andnearly got the equaliz-er when Greg Nemiszand Max Reinhart gotaway on a two-on-onebreak. Nemisz senta pass across, butReinhart couldn’t get astick on the puck.

Shortly thereafter,

Heat goalie Leland Irving smothers a shot during Game 3 action against the Toronto Marlies.
