EWS BRIEFS Fire training in Fort St. James
REBECCA WATSON
Caledonia Courier
Once started, a fire
can burn through a mod-
ern-day home over five
times faster than an older
home considering the
type of fuel. Where old-
er homes are built with
solid wood, newer homes
have particle board and
synthetics. Nonetheless,
a fire can rip through
any building faster than
people can escape some-
times, so it’s always good
to be prepared, said Fort
St. James Fire Chief Mi-
chael Navratil.
“We’ve got [wildfires]
all around us but were
doing alright. We had a
couple little fires in the
past few weeks but they
were contained and were
lucky they were,” said
Chief Navratil.
About six to eight
times a year the Fire
Rescue Team in Fort St.
James holds a training
session in the two-storey
concrete structure behind
the North Arm Pub
and Public Works. The
building mimics the first
floor and basement of a
house.
“Many times we are
going down into a fire
so this will simulate that.
It’s called a blow grade fire
attack,” said Chief Navratil.
Typically, firefighters
will suit up inside the truck
on their way to a call and
then pull the hose from the
speedlay (hose holder) for
immediate use. For training
purposes the volunteers had
the hose already laid out and
were able to focus on properly
dressing themselves.
“We’re starting from
scratch. It’s much quicker
if were going to a fire and
plus, it’s hot out.” said Chief
Navratil.
A firefighter uniform can
add around 70 extra pounds
and consists of flame re-
tardant boots, pants, coat,
gloves, helmet, and air pack.
Using a buddy check system
each firefighter must check
their partner to make sure no
skin is showing, their pants
are secure and their coat is on
properly.
Once everything has been
checked, the water is on, and
the delegating officer outside
gives the go ahead,
the attack team can
approach the entry.
But before entering
someone must re-
move their glove and
use the back of their
hand to find the ‘hot
spot’ of the door. This
is where the thermal
line is and determines
how low they can
walk in the building.
“If we get there
early enough the line
will be higher up.
The line also tells us
where the gases are
that can be upwards
of 800 degrees. I’ve
gone into structures
were the top of a big-
screen TV is melted
and the bottom in fine,” said
Alex Gross, 25, who is cur-
rently the training officer and
in charge of delegating over
radio from outside the build-
ing. It is also his job, prior
to entry, to do a walk around
spotting gas, oil or hydro
lines and to notify BC Hydro
or PNG if there are any pos-
sible live wires or lines.
After finding the hot spot,
the firefighter must then
check the floor with an axe or
halligon (multipurpose tool)
to sound the floor and make
sure it is structurally safe to
enter.
“This [practise building]
is concrete but most residenc-
es are wood so this will let us
know if we can enter or will
the floor fall,” said Mr. Gross.
If it’s ok to enter, it will
be completely black inside
and since they won’t be able
to see anything most of the
time, it’s essential to follow
the walls and open doors to
search each room. There are
two types of teams that will
enter the building. An attack
team and a rescue team.
“For tonight we did an all-
in-one just to train and have
us thinking that way,” said
Chief Navratil.
Richard Sutton, 25, and
Davin Birdi, 17, are firefight-
er volunteers that went into
the burning building a couple
times for practise.
“It’s nice to be apart of
the community. It allows
you to give back, you learn
some life-saving skills, and
plus, you get to hang out with
sparky,” joked Mr. Sutton.
Firefighter volunteers are
low, especially during the
summer months, said Chief
Navratil. If anyone is inter-
ested in becoming an on-call
paid volunteer firefighter call
250-996-8670 and talk to
Nancy for an application.

The risk of wildfires
for Fort St. James has
been apparent in the
recent ash and smoke.
Although there
are currently no wild-
fires in the area, the
Nak’azdli Band and
District of Fort St.
James offices continue
to monitor the situa-
tion through informa-
tion provided by the
Wildfire Management
Branch.
“If and when a
wildfire starts that
could impact the com-
munity, the Wildfire
Management Branch
(WMB) will contact
the District of Fort St.
James and Nak’azdli
Band and the Integrat-
ed Emergency Man-
agement Plan will be
activated,” said Emily
Colombo, economic
development officer, in
a media release Friday
July 18.
Residents will be
notified by the Dis-
trict of Fort St. James
and Nak’azdli Band if
either an ‘Evacuation
Alert’ or ‘Evacuation
Order’ is required via
door-to-door notifica-
tion, the district and
band websites, Twitter
and Facebook feeds,
local radio station 97.9
and electronic signs.
The District of Fort
St. James also reminds
families to review their
emergency plans in-
cluding the steps they
would take in the event
a home evacuation was
in order. Families may
consider things like
insurance papers and
important documents,
personal memorabilia
and medical require-
ments such as pre-
scriptions and glasses.
The district also re-
minds residents within
municipal boundaries
that a burning permit

NEWS BRIEFS Nak’azdli greenhouse
expanding
REBECCA WATSON
Caledonia Courier
For the first time in de-
cades an effort is being made
to produce fresh produce on
Nak’azdli land.
The Nak’azdli green-
house, now in it’s second
year, is moving forward as
planned, said greenhouse
manager Andrew Stairs.
The project even has a
small demonstration garden
in front of the Nak’azdli band
office to show people the
growing vegetables.
“We are trying to re-es-
tablish the notion that fruits
and vegetables can be grown
on the Nak’azdli reserve just
like in the old days,” said Mr.
The operation con-
nhouse,
ten raised flatbeds and three
rows of ground-level flat
beds. The greenhouse alone
is filled with over 600 toma-
to plants that will be ready
in 5-6 weeks. The six com-
mercial types
being grown
include red and
yellow cherry,
two types of
red beef steak,
pink beef
steak, and yel-
low beef steak.
Ten plants of
heritage vari-
ety are also being
grown to show people what
they look like.
The outdoor raised and
flat vegetable beds will also
soon harvest potatoes, on-
ions, cucumbers, leeks and
strawberries.
Some of the produce will
go to the Nak’azdli Health
Centre while most will be
sold at the local Sana’aih
Market and farmers market.
With so many tomato plants,
the field tomatoes will be
fully replaced at the grocer
with many left over to sell at
the market. This means a way
of financial earnings and also
provides band members with
more opportunity for jobs off
the reserve, said Mr. Stairs.
“Commercial gain and
social gain. It’s employing
people and producing food,”
said Mr. Stairs. Currently
the greenhouse
staff consists
of only a few
employees. La-
rissa George,
19, and Steven
Basil, 23, of
the Nak’azdli
reserve, are
the two new-
est employees
who were giv-
en the opportunity
through help of the Nak’azdli
band’s resource co-ordinator
Alexandra Lvqqi. The band
was able to provide them
with proper work ware in-
cluding gloves and boots to
ensure they are able to work
in a safe environment.
“We don’t have a lot of ag-
riculture but since the green-
house started last year its
been a positive experience,”
said Ms. Lvqqi.
If everything continues
as planned, greenhouse
employees will soon be given
the task of cleaning up the
land around the greenhouse.
The plan is to remove the
waste left by a nearby mill
to make room for a huge
vegetable patch. Any unused
wood pieces still in good
condition will be used to
create an indoor heating
system to help the greenhouse
sustain the winter.
“These are the first steps.
Next year we will see at least
10 more raised beds, and a
much wider variety of crops,”
said Mr. Stairs.

fresh
produce
REBECCA WATSON
Caledonia Courier
The Sana’aih Market
is owned and operated
by the Nak’azdli band.
Although it is impos-
sible for the market to
replace all it’s fresh
produce, this year will
be the first time the
grocery store offers any
type of locally grown
vegetable.
Since opening five
years ago, the market
has employed over 15
full-time and part-time
band members and
gives a tax exempt to all
status natives.
Many employees
and customers feel the
market gives them a
real sense of communi-
ty including store clerk
Diana Morris, who lives
on the Nak’azdli re-
serve and has worked at
the Sana’aih Market for
two years.
“This is a place
where families meet. I
have worked many jobs
as a waitress, in a day-
care, in an office, and
I was never able to in-
teract with people like I
do here. I can talk with
people about anything.
New cooking recipes,
or just about how they
are doing in general. I
love it here,” said Ms.
Morris.
The market not only
provides people with
the opportunity for
work and means of fini-
cal gain for the band, it
helps ensure fair prices

By Jesse ColeOmineca ExpressJamie MacDonald says that her
favourite aspect of speedskating is
how exciting the sport can be. “I’m
in short track speedskating and it
can be pretty intense,” the Fort St.
James local says. “There is a lot of
G-force and speed - you really need
to be able to be agile coming in and
out of the corners. It’s like roller
derby on ice.” MacDonald, who has been named
as part of the Canadian national
speedskating team’s development
team branch, has been speedskating
since she was only six years old.
“Our neighbour recommended the
sport and I just ended up falling in
love with it.” The national development team is
the training ground for speedskat-
ers who show exceptional promise.
It serves to hone their skills in
hopes of helping them compete on a
national and perhaps even olympic
level. The Canadian national team con-
sists of 12 of the top speedskaters
from across Canada, of which eight
are part of the national team while
the remaining four are placed on the
development team.“Basically they’re training us to
bring us up to a world-class level ”

Lakes District News
School District No. 91
(Nechako Lakes) has reached a
decision to close schools in Fort
St. James and Fort Fraser.
Sowchea Elementary in Fort
St. James and Fort Fraser El-
ementary will close as of June
30, 2015.
The board of education vot-
ed to close both schools after
a 60-day consultation period.
Two public meetings were held
in both Fort Fraser and Fort St.
James. Manu Madhok, Director
of Instruction for School Dis-
trict No. 91, said community
members offered possible al-
ternate solutions to closing the
schools.
“The Fort St. James com-
munity presented the board
with a very well done proposal
around creating neighbourhood
schools,” he said. “Although
that proposal was insuffi cient
to keep Sowchea Elementary
open, the board is hopeful to
keep working with that commu-
nity on some of their key ideas
and concepts for the existing
two schools.”
Fort St. James Mayor Rob
MacDougall said he under-
stands that the board of educa-
tion was faced with a very dif-
fi cult decision.
“I respect that decision; I
know it was tough,” he said.
“Having been involved in this
decision-making process, I
know it was not easy; they did
it with heavy hearts.”
The approximately 125 stu-
dents from Sowchea Elemen-
tary will be amalgamated into
David Hoy Elementary, creat-
ing a combined school of just
over 260 students. David Hoy’s
operational capacity is assessed
by the Ministry of Education at
345 students.
The approximately 50 stu-
dents from Fort Fraser El-
ementary will be amalgamated
into Mouse Mountain Primary
School and Fraser Lake Ele-
mentary Secondary School.
Madhok said a continuous
decline in enrollments was the
reason for the school closures.
In the Fort St. James area,
the school district has seen a
decline in enrollments from
900 students in 2000/01 (grades
k–12) to 594 students in the
2014/15 school year.
In the Fort Fraser/Fraser
Lake area, the school district
has seen a decline in enroll-
ments from 664 to 464 students
over that same period.
“School closures are not
a pleasant part of running a
school district,” said Madhok.
“However, the reality is that we
have far fewer students in our
communities; by closing these
two schools we have increased
utilization of our existing
schools and have ensured that
the board is being fi scally re-
sponsible in allocating the ma-
jority of their resources towards
students rather than partially
empty buildings.”
“We hope to see our com-
munity populations stabilize in
the next few years so that we
don’t have to continue dealing
with declining enrollments,” he
added.Over the last fi ve years,
School District No. 91 has
closed Topley Elementary
School in Topley, Muriel Mould
Primary School in Burns Lake,
and Prairiedale Elementary
School in Vanderhoof.
School District No. 91 announces school closures
Schools in Fort St. James and Fort Fraser will close by end of June
This is a photo of the last bus-load of students with some of the staff from Fort Fraser Elementary School
on June 25 2015. The students are happy that it is end of the school but sad that their school will be
closing for good on June 30th. Most of the students in September will be bussed to the Fraser Lake
schools in September. On June 22nd, the School Trustees from S.D. #91 voted to close Fort Fraser
Elementary and Sowchea Elementary in Fort St. James due to declining enrollment.
