Elk Valley’s Got Talent Friday, June 10 7:00 p.m. at the curling rink. We have

another amazing line up of artists for you to enjoy... come out and support our valley’s talent!

This year we had three audition nights; one in Fernie, one in Sparwood and one in Elkford.

Jenni and Rosita, Conner Keehn and Parker Keehn, Clare Story, Sarah Lewis and Catherin Merritt, Kyrsten Johnson, Jeff Chambers, Maria Landa, Robin Hansam, Michelle Power, Kyra von Matt and Keyten Kunst will be gracing our stage this year. With representation from Elkford, Fernie, Sparwood and even Fort Steele this year’s performance will be one for the record books. Prizes are $500 for the winning youth performance and $1000 for an adult winner. Prizes donated by the Coal Miner Days Society.

We are so fortunate to have three amazing judges to support and guide our talented performers; Nicole Pallone, Jesse Sutherland, and Coraley Letcher. Our judges experience includes professional theatre, professional performing

artist as well as professional dance choreography. In Elkford we had special guest judges Dino Pallone, (professional actor) as well as our very own Justine Bowen (gymnastics specialist and musical background) As this is our second year hosting Elk Valley`s Got Talent, we have

kicked things up yet another notch by adding a coaching night to assist our performers on stage presence and professionalism. Each performer had the opportunity to show off their skills on stage in front of the judges and received some great instructions to highlight the very

best performance that will help them succeed onstage at the semi-finals and ultimately lead to the finals that same evening. Plan on taking in this outstanding free show Friday evening before the fireworks. We would also like to thank the District of Sparwood for their generous donation, our emcee, Ryan Keehn, our DJ Ray Gareau and our audition

venues, Mountainside Church Fernie, Mountainside Church Sparwood and the Alliance Church in Elkford, (these locations were donated for use to the Coal Miner Days Society and featured sound equipment as well as musical instruments that assisted in our auditions,) and Apex Power & Automation for helping to make this event happen.

The Sparwood Coal Miner Days Society is always looking for

volunteers! We start planning events in January, so there are a lot of details that take place well in advance of the second weekend of June celebrations. Everything from monthly board meetings, populating our website, designing posters, creating mini movie presentations, ordering supplies, coordinating entertainment, creating custom shirts, making tickets, sharing on Facebook, filing grant applications, rallying partners to sponsor events, organizing the market and so much more. Months of dedication goes into creating an outstanding weekend that helps highlight all of the great things that Sparwood has to offer.

Coal Miner Days works hard to help highlight service groups, businesses and physical activity that we offer in our part of the Elk Valley. During the second weekend of June every year, organizations have the opportunity to

raise thousands of dollars that get donated back into our community. We provide advertising and participation that would be harder to gather on an individual basis as typical weekend attendance is estimated to be around 4000 people.

This year’s events are shaping up to be better than ever! Over the many years that Marcia Johnson has been president of the Coal Miner Days Society she has been fortunate to be surrounded by many great volunteers and this year is no exception; here are just a couple of examples.

Dawn Weatherbee is once again running the Slow Pitch Ball Tournament and coordinating the Beer Gardens. The ball tourney alone involves around 400 people who help supplement our economy and local business by eating out and staying in either the campground or in hotels around town. She feels that all the work that goes into it is worth it because people really enjoy it and appreciate all of the time and effort put into it.

Our Fire Department volunteers their time to help Sparwood understand the importance of being prepared in the event of a disaster. They practice for countless hours to provide Coal Miner Days with a world class fireworks demonstration. Not to mention the Fire Truck rides, Fire Fit Challenges, participating in the parade as well as the new event of the Golf Ball Drop where people have the chance to win $1000.

Gene von Matt and Allan Barrass of the Knights of Columbus have been a part of Coal Miner Days for about 13 years, they enjoy the community interaction, like being a part of something that families can enjoy and they enjoy helping to raise funds for charity.

This will be the second year Joshua Frere of NAPA has hosted the NAPA Car Show during Coal Miner Days. He is hoping to have a large turn out this year because he loves the support of the car community in the Elk Valley and the Crowsnest Pass. Organizing all of these

amazing beauties is a tough job but he does it with a smile.

Without our amazing volunteers we would not be able to have the calibre of events that we do. These are just a few of our many volunteers; we have openings

for board members as well, we are looking for hands to help at each event. Volunteering is a great way to meet great people in our community as well as show your support to the organization you are helping out! Please let us

know on Facebook if you have a couple of hours to support Coal Miner Days or any of the groups that help put events on in Sparwood… together we make our community great!

Apex Power & Automation P a r a d e -

This is the sixth annual Apex Parade. This year we will be featuring cadets, businesses, the Cranbrook Bugle band, Elk Valley’s Got Talent Finalists, Lethbridge Exhibition and many more great businesses and organizations. There will be something for everyone from big machinery and classic cars to beautiful horses. Our goal is to create an enjoyable fun / SAFE parade... that does not STOP on route. In order to remove the congestion at the end of the route... the end of the Parade is after Teck’s MVO office. This provides three ways to exit the route.) We will also have the fire trucks spread throughout the parade to keep the flow of the parade consistent and moving as well as having CMD Staff spread throughout the route very visible in their hi-vis shirts. Any other ideas that you can think of please let us know.. We start at 11:00 a.m. from the Chamber .... proceeding in a tight formation so the parade is consistent with no breaks. Sign up forms are available on our website coalminerdays.com.

BLAST FROM THE PAST 50 YEARS OF CELEBRATING SPARWOOD!

1996

Over the years Coal Miner Days has moved around finding its place in history. It’s been part of Canada Day, Labour Day and now has its very own designated weekend, the 2nd weekend in June.To everyone who has ever been involved in Coal Miner Days we want to say a big thank you because we know the

hours and dedication needed to pull this off. On behalf of everyone in the community, Thank You.

Fire Truck Rides brought to you by the Sparwood Fire Department

from 12-4 p.m. beside the Teck BBQ at the Rec Centre Saturday

June 11. See you there!

Are we prepared as a community if a disaster were to happen tomorrow? Well let’s get a little more prepared by visiting the Emergency Awareness displays, equipment and demonstrations. Bring the whole family and learn about how to best prepare for any emergency. Should a disaster hit,

almost everything we have will not be available, including transportation, electricity, water, food, medicine, and access to a doctor. Therefore, the main goal is to generate awareness to the importance of emergency preparation. Again this year, the Sparwood Fire Department will be hosting Emergency Awareness Day on June 11 during Coal Miner Days. Complete with fire truck rides, our Fire Fit Challenge, auto extrication demonstration, ladder demo’s and meeting our local firefighters. We also hope to see Interior Health, CP Rail Police, BC Ambulance Services, Sparwood Search and Rescue Services, Bear Aware and many other emergency rescue organizations join in.

The Sparwood Fire Department is a proud part of our Coal Miner Days events each year. They provide everything from world class fireworks display on Friday night, participating in the Apex Parade, entertaining families from noon-4 p.m. with the Fire Fit Challenge events, fire truck tours, hosting Emergency Awareness Day as well as a vehicle extraction at 1:30 p.m.– on Saturday they are taking things further this year by providing us a Golf Ball Drop fundraiser Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Knights of ColumbusSoapbox Derby

Knights of Columbus Soapbox Derby has been held during

Coal Miner Days for 10 of our 12 years of Soapbox Derbies. Our first Derby was in 2004. Our first two years were not held during Coal Miner Days as this has always been a Knights of Columbus fundraiser, but after seeing the huge crowds our event drew, the Coal Miner Days Committee requested that we hold our event during Coal Miner Days. Money raised goes back to supporting our community. The Soap Box Derby is a youth car racing event which features cars that are unpowered, relying completely upon gravity to race down Sparwood’s Red Cedar hill. The event itself has between 58 and 86 children participating, however with parents, businesses and fans cheering racers on, this event is always an exciting highlight

to Coal Miner Days. The experience includes approximately 40 volunteer workers on race day, about 15 people the evening before the race for registration/inspection/trial runs, and many many hours by a small group prior to the actual event. From 4 to 6 p.m., Saturday June 11 will be this year’s Soap Box Derby practice,

with races Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration forms for drivers can be found at www.coalminerdays.com and anyone looking to sponsor a car can contact Allan Barrass: 250-425-6608 ([email protected] ) or Gene von Matt: 250-425-0663 ([email protected]) Thank you to all of the hearts and hands that make this event possible.
