Leadership is about working with teams toward a common goal. The team that leads the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games is comprised of dynamic community leaders who share the goal of bringing high level competitive sport to Mission from February 20-23.
The focus for the "board of directors" is to provide an exceptional experience for almost 2,000 athletes, coaches and officials who are coming to Mission full of hopes, dreams, competitive spirit...and their own goal-setting.
Goal-setting has been a key part of the planning for each directorate. For instance, Bryan Fawcett's Transportation team has the goal of delivering competitors to sport venues safely, securely, and on time. Peter Bucher's Food Services team will deliver 25,000 meals to Games participants. Cal Crawford's Ceremonies team produces dynamic opening and closing ceremonies. Danny Plecas' Accommodations team provides secure space for participants to sleep in local schools. Peter Robson's Medical Services team ensures venues are supported by qualified medical and physio personnel.
The list goes on through Steve Sharpe's Sport team which coordinates all competitions activity, and Shaun Wright's Security team which ensures activities are safe and secure. Eden Green's Registration and Results team handles accreditation for all participants and posts results. Kayla Johannessen's Promotions team leads public relations activities, and Bob and Leslie Reed's Special Events team organizes evening events.
Jordon West's Communications team ensures Games venues are connected electronically, and Grant Mottershead and Barbara Bremner's Friends of the Games team engages sponsors and supporters and ensures proper recognition. Elyssa Lockart's Protocol team manages all receptions and government involvement. And Ann Harper's Administration team controls all financial aspects and works with Operations Manager Rodd McCormick to facilitate all Games operations.
Teams working for teams: the concept is working well for the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games board throughout the Games.

For the first time ever, Mission is hosting British Columbia’s premier multi-sport event, the BC Winter Games. More than 1,800 participants and up to 2,000 volunteers will celebrate sport and community over four action-packed days.
The BC Winter Games are the first multi-spor t experience for British Columbia’s best emerging high performance athletes, trained coaches, and certified officials. These participants have been training throughout the past year for the chance to represent their home zone at the BC Winter Games. This experience is an important development opportunity and stepping stone for athletes, coaches, and officials to one day represent the province or country at the most elite levels of competition.
“ The future of sport in B.C. will be in Mission and we want to see these young athletes compete to the best of their ability,” said Kelly Mann, president and CEO of the BC Games Society.
“The BC Winter Games are the first step towards national and international level competitions where we see BC Games alumni taking centre stage.”
The timing of the BC Winter Games this year is particularly exciting as it coincides with the final weekend of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi. Thirteen BC Games alumni are competing for the Canadian Olympic team including 2010 Olympic gold medalist Maëlle Ricker (snowboard), 2011 World Champion Kelsey Serwa (ski cross), NHL star Carey Price (hockey) and former track and field standout turned bearded bobsleigh driver, Justin Kripps.
Athletes like our Canadian Olympians have been supported throughout their careers by family, organizations, and countless volunteers. It is the volunteers who are truly the driving force and heart and soul behind the BC Winter Games. It is their commitment that provides an experience of a lifetime for our young athletes.
A local organizing committee has been planning and preparing for more than 18 months to welcome the province. The team of Games-time volunteers is taking care of every aspect of the event from the sport competitions to ceremonies, food, transportation, accommodation and special events.
This is where it begins. Let’s make the Mission 2014 BC Winter Games an experience to remember!

About 60 Fraser Valley culinary students will be earning a unique and significant experience during the BC Winter Games.
They’ll be put to task throughout the four-day event, preparing everything from boxed lunches to formal dinners. Under the guidance of about seven lead chefs, the students will help prepare up to 2,000 meals daily, three times a day.
About a dozen of those students will come from Maple Ridge secondary school, with their chef instructor Trevor Randle.
When the call came from fellow chef instructor Peter Bucher at Heritage Park secondary to help out in the Games’ kitchens, Randle didn’t think twice.
“There are only about 68 teaching kitchens around B.C.,” Randle said, so the instructors tend to be a tight-knit group who help each other out whenever possible.
“Peter’s the one running the show,” when it comes to feeding hungry athletes, coaches, parents and dignitaries,“ Randle explained. “So we’re all excited to help him out and I know he would do the same for us.”
Randle will be bringing in his students
over three time slots. Along with the other volunteers, they’ll be creating more than 1,800 box lunches daily out of Hatzic Secondary. A further 2,000 or so breakfasts are being served at Heritage Park on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Games,
and another 2,000 dinners on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
It’s a monumental task, but Randle is certain that his students can handle it. At Maple Ridge’s commercial kitchen, students already learn to plan, prepare and serve
meals in large quantities. Like the athletes they’re feeding, the Games is a premium opportunity for the student chefs to push their own limits.
“It’s the perfect scenario,” he said. “I’ll have students from my school not just working with me, but working with other chefs and in a high-volume situation. It’s a win-win.”
Even better, the students in the kitchen will be cheering for the students competing.
“Their peers are the ones competing,” Randle said. “So the whole thing is student-centered. And they’ll see that if it wasn’t for all the volunteers, things like this wouldn’t be able to happen.”
Randle was the food coordinator when the BC Disability Games was held in Maple Ridge in 2008, and took in the BC Summer Games as a spectator when that event was held in Langley.
“It was fantastic watching these guys in our neighbourhood, in our backyard. How could I miss it?” he said. “Seeing these young people. These are our future Olympians and seeing them now is wonderful. They’re top-notch.”

The BC Winter Games is bringing the best athletes to the forefront, Feb. 20-23 in Mission.
But before the first skis even hit the slopes, before the first drop of the puck, there will be a dazzling, culture-filled opening ceremony. Filled with drumming, music and dancers, the ceremony pulls together dozens of local artists and a large troupe of dancers.
One of those artists is Jennie Bice, a Mission-area musician and owner of Annwyn Studios. Through her involvement with Fraser Valley arts and culture organizations, Bice was commissioned to compose the theme song for the Games.
“Bronwen Sutherland phoned me last summer and asked if I’d be interested,” she recalls. “I thought, ‘Oh, that’s kind of neat.’ I’d never done anything like that before.”
Bice’s focus is on the fiddle, and she’s equally comfortable working with Celtic groups or rock bands.
But there were a few parameters that the theme song needed to follow.
“It has to be sports-related, and youth-focused,” she says. In short, it had to be a bit “pop.”
“I’ve never really written a pop song,” she confesses. But she has now, and the result is a song that encapsulates the spirit of the Games. But it also drums up a sense of community. With help from her husband Joe Samarodin as engineer, the song is a blend of local musicians and many of her own music students.
Each of the six main musicians has been into Annwyn Studios to lay down their tracks, including the multi-talented Boris Sichon.
“He can play something like 300 instruments,” Bice says. He contributed to the recorded track with 10 different instruments, from the drum to the didgeridoo.
Andy Hillhouse, executive and artistic director of the Harrison Festival Society, has
also contributed to the track as a guitarist. All the musicians involved will be invited to the mainstage at the opening ceremonies at the Mission Raceway on Feb. 20, where they’ll perform the song live.
That performance will feature more than two dozen musicians, Bice says.
Sichon will have eight or nine students on stage, Bice will have a dozen of hers there, and a central band will round out the group. Kaitlin Holtsby and Caroline Samarodin will offer the vocals.
Many of the performers are younger, with an age range of five to 17.
“It’s a pretty neat experience to unite so many players on stage,” Bice says. “It’s a big opportunity for them. How often do you get to present a tune for such a big event?”
But even for an experienced performer like Hillhouse, one of the founders of the band Mad Pudding, performing at the BC
Winter Games opening ceremony is a career highlight.
“It will be exciting,” he says. “I’ve just moved back to B.C. from Ontario, so it’s a nice arrival — to be involved in this right when I get back.”
He’s worked with Bice before, and while they have yet to perform the song in a full live rehearsal, he
knows she’s hit the mark.
“She did a great job,” he says. “The song perfectly fits the occasion.”
The BC Winter Games opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Mission BC Games Event Centre located at Mission Raceway Park.

BC GAMES HELPED LAUNCH HAYDENBy Dan KINVIGABBOTSFORD NEWS
Brent Hayden, Mission’s own Olympic hero, is living proof that the BC Games can yield some mighty impressive returns.
Back in 1998, Hayden was a 14-year-old member of the Fraser Valley swimming team at the BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. He authored a dominant showing – six gold medals, one silver and two bronzes.
“All those medals translated later on to that one Olympic medal,” Hayden said in an interview with Black Press last week, alluding to the bronze he won in the 100-metre freestyle at the 2012 London Summer Games. “It definitely made me a lot more confident and a lot more competitive as an athlete.”
Hayden, now retired from competitive swimming and residing in Vancouver, is thrilled that his hometown is hosting the BC Winter Games. He’ll be making an appearance at the opening ceremony, and his wife Nadina, a Nettwerk Records recording artist, will be singing the national anthem.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for Mission to showcase what they have in terms of the community and the local talent.”
Reflecting further on his own BC Games
experience, Hayden noted that 1998 was his first exposure to a sprawling multi-sport event. The experiences beyond the pool, he said, were as beneficial to his development as the competition itself.
“Quite frankly, it ’s very similar to what you experience at the Olympic Games or a Commonwealth Games – it’s just a smaller scale.”
“A lot of times, athletes don’t get to experience being around athletes from other sports at the same time. When you go to a swim meet, you’re only around other swimmers.
“And I know when I went, we were all sleeping in a classroom in sleeping bags. It’s actually better that way, I think, because when you go to the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, it ’s not always so glamorous. The beds are usually too small if you’re a bigger athlete (Hayden is 6’4”), and the mattresses are usually really cheap. I think it kind of teaches you as well that no matter what your living situation is, you still have to get up and perform.”
Hayden’s glittering career included a gold medal in the 100m free at the 2007 world championships (he tied for first with Italy’s

Filippo Magnini), along with three other silvers and a bronze at the worlds. He was also a double gold medalist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, winning both the 50m and 100m free events.
Now 30 years old, Hayden retired from swimming after his podium finish in London, and he acknowledged it hasn’t always been an easy transition.
“It’s been tough . . . I definitely miss competition,” he said. “Watching the World Championships last summer on TV, it was actually kind of tearing at my emotional strings a little bit. I almost contemplated coming out of retirement and going for 2016 (the Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro).
“But then I remembered that the reason I retired in London was wanting to go out the way I did. It was the perfect ending to my career, and I really didn’t want to ruin that.”
These days, Hayden splits his time between artistic and athletic pursuits.
Photography was a hobby when swimming monopolized his time, but his camera work is starting to take off. Some of his photos are currently on display at the Mission Art Centre, and he’s got another show scheduled for March 11-24 at the Cassera - Foot of Main Gallery in Vancouver.
“It’s given me the chance to really work on my photography and take it from more of a hobby and a way to escape a depressing swim practice, and actually focus on it a little more professionally,” he noted.
“I’m mostly doing minimalist sort of landscapes. I like to get a painted sort of look that can only be achieved by using certain filters and things like that, dragging out the shutter speed. . . . I don’t like just recording what’s in front of me – I like transforming it into something else entirely, that you can only do with a camera.”
Hayden is also staying involved in swimming by doing private coaching and online video analysis.
“People submit videos of themselves swimming, and I kind of pick it apart and send back a PDF with a full breakdown of the things that they can work on,” he explained.
“It’s very rewarding to me to give back to the swimming community – I’ve learned so much over the years, and I think it would be incredibly selfish of me to keep it all to myself and just move on from the sport.”
Athletic retirement, Hayden said, can be “pretty shocking,” but a year and a half in, he’s getting a handle on it.
“I think I’m finding my feet,” he said.

An unseasonably warm winter in the Fraser Valley initially led to questions if that would affect the BC Winter Games’ (BCWG) skiing events at Hemlock Valley Resort. However, contingency plans and a recent blast of cold and snow have improved the picture considerably.
Hemlock is set to host both alpine and freestyle skiing during the Games, and while the weather has impacted conditions and organizers’ original plans, contingencies have been put in place to ensure the Games go off without a hitch.
Jan Voss, chief of course for the BCWG, is in charge of preparing and maintaining the courses at Hemlock.
He noted in a recent email that Hemlock typically hosts its alpine races on a run called Roddy’s, and that is still the
primary objective if the snowpack gets deep enough.
Last week’s cold snap created 1.5 feet of “bulletproof snow,” according to Ross, which creates the fast, icy conditions that racers prefer. With the new powder predicted for this week, Voss is optimistic there will be more than enough depth on Roddy’s. This run is preferred because it means spectators, volunteers and workers will be in the sun, rather than the shade.
Nevertheless, Plan B – already approved by BC Alpine – is to move the alpine events to an east-facing run called Timbercruiser.
“The run has lots of snow on it,” said Voss. “We are 100 per cent confident that the alpine races will proceed.”
BC Alpine has also approved two potential alternate locations
for the ski cross course.
Voss won’t know until Monday which alpine run will be used. The final decision will be based on how much snow is available to install the racing gates – the poles that racers ski around – as well as build the banked turns and roller features.
Voss is thrilled at the expertise of the course builders and workers who are helping get Hemlock ready for the Games. Many have helped set
up ski races for the Vancouver Olympics and World Cup events in Lake Louise and Whistler. Additionally, ski cross course builder Johnnie Balfour recently returned from the Sochi Winter Olympics.
“We are very excited to have all these high-calibre volunteers with both national and international expertise donate their time to give the young ski racers participating at BCWG a top-notch ski race event at Hemlock,” Voss said.

What do CFL football and ringette have in common? Ask Richard White.
As a young athlete, Richard was not on skates but, instead, applied his talents to the gridiron. He was a linebacker for Simon Fraser University’s football team and then was drafted by the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1981, which led to a five-year career in the Canadian Football League.
Richard started coaching ringette when his daughter became involved in the sport and has coached at the 2011 Canada Winter Games and the 2012 Junior World Championships.
As head coach of Vancouver-Squamish Zone 5 ringette, Richard will lead his team to the 2014 BC
Winter Games in Mission this February. In addition to his coaching duties, he is also taking part in the Female Coaching Mentor/Apprentice Program and will be mentoring a female apprentice coach at the BC Winter Games.
Here are a few Q&As with Richard White.
How did you get involved in coaching ringette?
My oldest daughter didn’t get into soccer in Grade 1 and she was very sad. One of her friends saw that she was sad and told her she could play a sport with her other friends. Her friend told her that there was lots of room on her ringette team and she could play with her. So, Lynita joined the team.
After the first year of watching the sport, and me having a little bit of experience of coaching I
offered to help out on the ice. The next thing I knew I was asked to head coach her team the next year. In the second year we placed second in the provincial championships and won a great many tournaments and the league championship. Over the past few years I have been offered positions coaching elite teams, which is a great honour.
Lynita played for Team BC at the 2011 Canada Winter Games and has been part of the National Ringette League in Ontario for the
last five years.
What do you love about coaching?
I love to see players want to come back and take on the challenge of getting better at their sport. I really love watching players develop and improve. I also love mentoring new coaches in the sport, because it is something where I really see improvement being needed. So many times at the most important time for a player’s development is when we have the least experienced coaches working with them.
What do you hope to accomplish by being a mentor coach for the BC Games?
My goal for being a mentor is making ringette better in B.C. I would like to accomplish this by introducing coaches to all aspects of preparing a player for an elite-level competition. This way the newer coaches can go back with a complete arsenal of information that they can use when they feel comfortable trying it.
Why do you think a program to mentor female coaches is important?
In the sport that I coach, where the majority of players are female, it gives the players a person that they can relate to as an athlete that would understand their way of thinking. Also, this gives our local communities all the way up to our
country, a more diverse level of coaching, with a more balanced view on dealing with challenges. In order to have your athletes believe that there are opportunities out there they need to see people that have achieved and accomplished goals and opportunities that they may someday want to be in that position.
What are you most looking forward to at the 2014 BC Winter Games?
I am looking forward to introducing a fresh batch of athletes to what high-level performance is all about. It is an incredible feeling when new people show their excitement for something they have never experienced and want more of.
The Coaching Mentor/Apprentice Program is a partnership of the BC Games Society, ViaSport and Promotion Plus and provides mentoring opportunities for female coaches at the BC Winter and BC Summer Games.

It’s all coming together. As more than 1,000 athletes
and their coaches count down the days to the BC Winter Games, one group of dancers and their choreographer are ticking down the moments as well.
Ticking, clicking, tapping and swishing.
Choreographer Debbie Calicetto, owner of CanDance Studio in Mission, has been working with a group of almost 50 local dancers for the past four months. Together, they’ll be performing a 10-minute dance as part of the Games opening ceremonies Thursday, Feb. 20, at the Mission BC Games Event Centre at Mission Raceway Park.
“What they asked me to do was to put together a dance that conveys the spirit of the Games,” she said. To achieve
that effect, she has created segments that represent each of the sports played at the Games.
Those sports include curling, basketball, judo, karate, skiing events, speed skating, and many more.
To find the right dancers, Calicetto held two days of auditions, to which more than 100 dancers showed up. She narrowed it down to 47 youth, ages seven to 18. Some happened to be her own students from CanDance.
The excitement is growing amongst the young group.
“They’re very keen, and they’re showing up for all the practices,” she said.
Once they take the stage, they’ll all remain in action for the entire dance, Calicetto said. But that won’t be difficult for the experienced teacher.
“It’s totally fine for me,” she said. “I like big groups. It looks
a little more dramatic.” Calicetto feels confident
that she and her troupe will be in fine form for the opening ceremony, a huge event that includes a live presentation of the official BC Winter Games Theme song, and much more.
Calicetto has been teaching dance in the Mission area for 25 years, and this is her second time working with the Games committee. When the Summer Games were held in Abbotsford in 2004, she was asked to create a dance segment for the opening ceremonies as well. That year, she chose a circus theme.
She said it’s wonderful that the entertainment component of the Games, including the theme music, is all being handled by local artists.
“It’s an honour to be a part of a community event that is bigger than the community itself,” she said. “It’s a great honour to be a part this.”
