Lending a helping handKevin MILLSMission record

As the holiday season approaches, the publics’ focus often turns to help-ing those in need.

However, the Mission Community Services Food Centre offers help 12 months a year.

The centre relies on volunteers to provide groceries to low income fam-ilies in Mission. A large number of those volunteers are seniors.

Phil Hope, coordinator of the Food Centre and of the annual Christmas Bureau campaign said there are more than 200 volunteers lending a hand.

“Without volunteers, this wouldn’t happen,” said Hope, adding that more volunteers are always welcome, espe-cially now.

The Christmas Bureau’s campaign has just started. Volunteers collect donations of food, money and new toys to create special holiday ham-pers.

Any donations to the Christmas Bureau that are left over are given to the food centre, so nothing is wasted.

Volunteers at the centre all agree on one thing, “it feels good” to help others.

Christine Goeghart has volunteered her time for the past 10 years

“I heard they (food centre) needed help. They didn’t have as many vol-unteers back then, so I thought ok... I wanted to do something for the com-munity, help out, and I wanted to be active a little bit,” said Goeghart.

She volunteers twice a week and wants to encourage other seniors to come out and lend a hand.

“It provides a purpose in life, you’re not sitting, doing nothing.

“We came always use more seniors.”Molly Hawkins agrees. She has

spent that past decade offering her time to help anyway she can.

“I just love helping other people

Mission residents Anne and Cornelius Bergen were married in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on November 7, 1939.

Earlier this month, the happy couple celebrate their 76th wedding anniversary.

The couple came to B.C. in 1947 along with their three young daughters. They settled in Burns

Lake and later moved to Clearbrook. After that the relocated again, first to Fort St John, then to Abbotsford and finally to Mission where they’ve made their home since 1989.

Anne and Cornelius raised 8 children (one who is now deceased) and have 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Mission’s Anne and Cornelius Bergen were married on Nov. 7 1939. The couple had been together for 76 years.

Ice, snow and cooler temperatures makes life challenging for everyone. Slippery sidewalks and cold weather can cause a wide range of injuries and illnesses – especially for seniors.

Dress warmly: Cold temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia.

Avoid slips: Falls are a common occur-rence for senior s especially during the winter months. Wear shoes with good traction and non-skid soles, and stay inside until the roads are clear.

Fight depression: Because it can be hard to get around, many seniors have less contact with others during cold months. Avoid these issues by having family members check in on seniors or call or use faceTime to stay in contact.

Power outages: Winter storms can lead to power outages. Make sure you have easy access to flashlights and a bat-tery-powered radio in case the power goes out. Stockpile warm blankets.

Hi to those aging in Mission. I’m Gordon

Dainard and I successfully aged 65 years last

week. I moved to Mission five years ago with

my wife after aging in Alberta and working

for a major energy company in their head

office in Calgary for 35 of those years. I also

volunteered in various areas during the same

35 years.

Since moving here, I’ve been busy volun-

teering with various groups such as Mission

Community Services, Mission Seniors Centre

Association and Lifetime Learning.

I recently completed training as a facilita-

tor to present workshops from the Council

of Seniors Citizens Organization (COSCO),

Health and Wellness Institute. You might see

me at the Leisure Centre, in the gym or on

the golf course when I’m not volunteering or

doing retail therapy with my wife.

So what’s Gord have to say? It will be an

honour to condense the COSCO workshops

into a short summary each month for the

community. There are currently 42 workshops

available and they are free to community

groups, not-for-profit Associations, libraries,

retirement residences and any group that’s

interested in a topic.

The workshops should be booked directly

through COSCO at the contact information in

their brochure. If you’re interested in hearing

what Gord has to say for 90 minutes, please

request me as the facilitator.

If you would like a brochure, please send me

an email and I’ll send you one. gdainard333@

gmail.com

My first topic is Advanced Care Planning

covering who makes decisions for you when

you have aged 19 years and are not capable

of making decisions for yourself, including

when you may be temporarily incapable due

to an accident.

So that’s all Gord has to say for now. Hope

to see some of you at a workshop.

and I like community services, I really believe in it and its a great way to reach out to people that need help,” said Hawkins, adding it gives her a feeling of joy.

But the food centre isn’t the only place this busy senior like to volun-teer. She has also helped with the homeless count, at the Christmas Bureau office and other community projects. She says seniors should get

out and lend a helping hand.“I think that probably all of the

people who help out here fall under the category of retired or senior. I think there is lots that seniors can do. They have all that life experi-ence,” said Hawkins.

Another food centre volunteer, Mervin Hildebrandt, decided volun-teering was the smart move.

“I retired and needed something to

do and I though this would be good,’ he said.

He also volunteers one day a month at the prison.

“Most of the times you are helping people, you get a smile out of them and they say thank you.”

That makes it all worth it.If you wish to volunteer at the

Food Centre, contact Mission Com-munity Services at 604-826-3634.

Are you overwhelmed taking care of aging parents?

Today, seniors make up about 12 per cent of the Mission popula-tion, and Statistics Can-ada predicts this num-ber will double by 2036. An increase of seniors impacts many things including the health-care system, the econ-omy and our workforce. In addition, this demo-graphic shift is affect-ing adult children, also called “the sandwich generation,” who are balancing caregiving

responsibilities of aging parents while raising their own children and maintaining careers. The Health Council of Canada noted that 57 per cent of family care-givers have other full time jobs and they are stretched beyond their capacity. Many report high levels of stress and have difficulties balanc-ing responsibilities. Most often, those caregivers are the eldest daughter.Few families are

aware that medical and non-medical care exists beyond the four walls of the hospital. It’s import-ant for family caregiv-ers to utilize available resources in the com-munity, like private home care, to lessen the burdens of care. Unfor-tunately, it’s often not until there is a medi-cal emergency that the topic of enhanced care is first discussed. It can be challenging to broach the topic of increased

care with parents. In fact, the number one fear of seniors is lost independence, which is why seeking help from experts at initiating happy aging talks is so important. Some tips include

casually asking ques-tions like “what are your worries as you age?” “What do you want for the future?” and “how can we work together to make sure you are happy and healthy?” Home care can be a great first step, because there is no drastic change of address or lifestyle, and this can help with the transition of accepting help. Keep in mind that services like home care are flexible to meet indi-vidual needs. Services

can range from a few hours a week of com-panionship and errand running, to round-the-clock nursing care.Instead of daughters
