Hi Everyone, Welcome to our latest newsletter, also welcome to our new members and past members who have just renewed again, nice to see ya interest in the Blues hasn’t faded! Wow so much has been happening since the last newsletter. The West Coast Blues Club and Serenity Lodge would like to thank all that contributed and supported our fundraiser. Your donation was very much appreciated. The amount raised for Serenity Lodge was $1500. The money raised will go towards trying to ease the ever-increasing need for the services that Serenity Lodge provides. We could not have held the fundraiser if it were not for our sponsors full thank you’s on pg 5.

Also, I sincerely want to thank the guys Jeff, Derek, & John from Mississippi Shakedown. Fresh off the heels of their latest, CD these guys came across the Nullabour to enlighten WA audiences to their style of Blues, showcasing at our fundraiser for Serenity Lodge. There is a smooth quality to their playing. Their tracks were varied in style from slide guitar to rockabilly as well as R&B Definitely foot tappin’ material. The production of this band was extreme class. These boys put on a great show not only great muso’s but nice guys at that. Let’s hope they come back again and say g’day.

Our 5th birthday was a total blast, if you missed it you certainly missed out on a great nights entertainment. Lloyd was just brilliant. Lloyd says he has the highest selling acoustic CD in Japan. Well done Lloyd it won’t be long till more people take notice of the excellence the music scene in Australia has to offer.

Bridgetown, well what can I say I was so proud of our showcase and the production. All the muso’s were just grand. The Southwest Blues Club came across from Bunbury for the first time to Bridgetown as these guys have been up and running for about 6 months now. Good on ya boys’ brilliant sounds love the brass. You had the crowd rockin’. You had me a bit worried though 2 days before the show when you said we were without drums, hmmm but as usual things just fell into place. The day started with no shade for the muso’s then a little rain but by the time we were ready to rock the sun came out and shone upon us all, the gods must have been on our side. Bluetongue, a band I haven’t seen since there CD launch at the club were brilliant, the smooth sounds of Gary’s guitar could be heard way up the street. Their new songs were just great, adding a few covers seemed to draw the crowd and I might add they stayed through all the boys’ originals which says a lot. You’re on the right track guys keep it up. I thoroughly enjoyed it and so did everyone else.

One more act was on the bill and that was our baby to the Club Matt Gresham. We have seen Matt rise as a young man and the crowds were in awe at Bridgetown. Matt sold 30 CD’s in an hour only wishing he had brought more down. Matt you underestimate yourself! Matt attracted more than 200 people on the Main St up dancing and best of all I looked around and everyone had smiles on their faces, now that’s what I am talk’n about.

The WCBC has 3 very important events in Feb 2007 make sure you mark ur calendars. 4th Kwinana K Town Blues & Roots, this concert will be the farewell to our finest in WA to journey across the nation to Australian Blues Music Festival in Goulburn representing WA. Musicians included in this showcase are Mark Vine and the Myx, Blue Shaddy, Matt Gresham, Ben Witt and Ivan Zarr. I have to say that this is a first for a WA Blues Club and let’s hope many more to come eh! 2

From the fame and hysteria of pop stardom in the Sixties to the poignancy of his current

situation, his story is a tale of courage in the face of adversity, and survival against the odds. Steven Wright was born on December 20 1948 in Leeds, England. His family came to Australia as assisted migrants. Bitten by the rock ‘n’ roll bug at an early age and in the early sixties he fronted two local bands, The Outlaws, followed by Chris Langdon & The Langdells. Wright joined the Easy beats in 1964 and by the middle of ‘66

they were the most popular and successful group in the country, generating scenes of mass hysteria that rivalled the Beatles. They had several Australian hits, including the worldwide smash “Friday on My Mind,” before the band broke up in 1969. He then formed the band Rachette and produced Bootleg’s debut single, “Whole World Should Slow Down.” From 1971-1973 he returned to Sydney to perform in the Australian production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Stevie was one of the most dynamic performers on the local scene, famous for his trademark stage technique, the flying tambourine and his acrobatic leaps and backflips, he influenced many singers who followed him. Wright began work on his debut solo album Hard Road with Easy-beats’ songwriters Harry Vanda and George Young. Released in April 1974 the album peaked at #5 nationally and spawned Wrights best known hit and groundbreaking debut solo single “Evie” which peaked at #2 nationally. Clocking a whopping 11 minutes in total, it seemed an unlikely chart contender, but the 3 parts were wisely split across the 2 sides of the single, and the head on power rock of Evie Part 1 proved irresistible. Suzi Quatro later covered Evie, and Rod Steward included a version of Hard Road on his Smiler album. Evie is now widely considered to be one of the best Australian singles of the rock era. By the mid 70’s Wright’s drug addiction had begun to curtail his career. Over the next few years Wright was to perform many times including a successful 6 week national reunion tour with the Easybeats in October 1986. Wright formed the band Hard Rain in 1988 and released the album Striking it Rich in 1991. With his health declining Wright gave what he thought would be his final performance at Sydney's Coogee Bay Hotel on April 4, 1992. Happily since then Stevie has been steadily picking up the pieces of his shattered life and returning to health. He has finally beaten his twin demons and has now been drug and alcohol free for several years. Despite a debilitating ankle injury, Stevie joined the Long Way To The Top tour in 2002 and his nightly rendition of Evie proved to be one of the emotional highlights of the concerts. In late 2003, a group of friends including Matt Taylor, Kevin Borich, Harry Brus, Max Merritt & Russell Morris got behind Stevie for the acclaimed Hard Road Tour. The concerts were rapturously received. Stevie Wright was and will always be one of the key faces of 60’s Australian pop music and one of our best-loved stars. His timeless songs and performances with The Easybeats and in his solo career will endure long after the trivia and scandal of his later life has been forgotten, and his best work will surely endure for generations to come. It is a matter of great joy to say that there has been a happy ending and that Stevie Wright is finally back to where he belongs and has at last been accorded the recognition and respect that he so richly deserves. In 2005 the Easybeats were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. 7

The West Coast Blues Club Needs You! The WCBC is a ‘not for profit’ organisation committed to the on-going presentation of blues performances within the region as well as showcasing local talents to the broader State and Interstate audiences. The new year is set to begin with some great outdoor events in the summer months, such as the “K Town Blues & Roots Concert” at the Kwinana Amphitheatre and the “Music In The Park” free concert at the Rockingham foreshore. These two shows are family friendly. Last year it was great to see children of all ages out enjoying the fresh air and good tunes. We had an audience well in excess of 500 people at both of these local events. Our committee is planning events continuously and we are currently looking for more sponsors to help us with the many events we have planned for the future. We offer three levels of sponsorship; Gold, Silver and Bronze. This type of Sponsorship may not be suitable for everyone, other alternatives would be to Sponsor our Sound Production or one of our venues or maybe even a Band? So depending on your business and your needs we look forward to all Partnerships or Sponsorship with WCBC. Please contact us for more info!
