6 Monday – Art, Tuesday – PE, Wednesday – Music, Thursday – Art, Independent Reading 5 th grade students have officially received their first quarter due dates for their Independent Reading Goal. Each quarter 5 th grade students are required to read 5 chapter books of their choice that are in their Lexile range . Once they have finished their book they are required to take a Scholastic Reading Counts test and report their score to their teacher. Students may only choose 1 graphic novel (Examples include: Dork Diaries or Diary of a Wimpy Kid) to read this quarter. If a student chooses, they may complete the reading BEFORE the due dates for the quarter and then be on a “Reading Vacation” the rest of the quarter. The due dates for each book are below. Students may have the opportunity to use some Reading Workshop time to read but most will have to read at home to complete this requirement. It is best to send a check – not cash. Parents please check and review your child’s planner each evening. Just some quick notes as this is a late newsletter-your students continue to progress through the year with excellence in academics, and that is a big result of not only what I do here, but what you, the parents, are doing at home. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! As first quarter dwindles down, please continue to encourage students to go above and beyond expectations in both their academics and behavior. Mr. Hettich’s Classroom News This Week … Reading Workshop: We are wrapping up figures of speech, and will be moving into theme this week. I’ve begun meeting with reading groups every day to hear them read, and develop comprehension about what they’re reading. Writer’s Workshop: We are completing prepositions, and moving into adjectives this week. As well, students will begin the drafting step of the writing process, and end the week with a bit of peer editing. Spelling: We will focus on Unit 7 words this next week. Your child should be bringing this list home to study as well as the parent-student activity each week. Math: We begin chapter 2 in our math books this week. Please review multiplication facts with students, and also practice division with them as this chapter deals heavily with division. Science: No science. Birthday Treats Students are welcome to bring treats for their birthday. The Jefferson City Public School District passed POLICY JCHF which states that for any food to be served in the classroom the ingredients MUST BE KNOWN. Mr. Hettich CANNOT SERVE ANY FOOD WITHOUT A LIST OF INGREDIENTS. Birthday treats must be ready-to-serve. If the food needs to be cut, it must be cut BEFORE it is sent to school. Birthday treats will be passed out in the afternoon around 3:30 PM. We have 22 students in our class. *We do have students this year who have various allergies. Please keep their needs in mind when purchasing your child’s treat to share.* Cedar Hill students, staff and families are committed to ensuring high levels of learning for all students and providing a positive, safe, and consistent climate that promotes student character.

The due dates for each book are below. Students may have the opportunity to use some Reading Workshop time to read but most will have to read at home to complete this requirement. If your child fails to complete an Independent Reading Goal by the due date they will owe their recess time until it is completed.
