Chris’ Weekly Spot

This Wednesday is WORLD KINDNESS DAY. World Kindness Day is celebrated annually on

13th November and its purpose is to highlight the difference kindness can make

individually, within a community, and globally. It’s about attempting to create a kinder

world by actively promoting good deeds and acts of kindness. Kindness is a fundamental

part of being human and encourages us all to look beyond the boundaries of race, religion,

politics and gender.

Acts of kindness are not only beneficial for those who receive them but also for those who

are being kind to others. Being kind can actually make you healthier and happier.

KINDNESS BOOSTS YOUR MOOD: Kindness activates your pleasure centre in your brain

and feel-good chemicals like serotonin and endorphins are released. You experience a real

buzz…..something that is known as, “Helper’s High”.

KINDNESS REDUCES ANXIETY: Being nice to others can be one of the easiest ways to keep

anxiety at bay. In one study, a group of highly anxious individuals performed at least six

acts of kindness a week. After just one month there was a significant increase in positive

moods, relationship satisfaction and a decrease in social avoidance. So, the next time you’re

feeling a little anxious, look for opportunities to help others. Even a small gesture can make

a big difference.

KINDNESS IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART: Acts of kindness create emotional warmth, which

initiates the release of a hormone known as oxytocin. Oxytocin causes the release of a

chemical called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide dilates (expands) the blood vessels. This reduces

blood pressure which, in turn, protects the heart. Oxytocin can also increase our self-

esteem and optimism, which is extra helpful when we’re feeling shy in a social situation.

Even just witnessing acts of kindness produces oxytocin.

KINDNESS REDUCES STRESS: Helping others lets you get outside of yourself and take a

break from the stress in your own life. Helping others can also make you better equipped

to handle stressful situations. Studies have found that perpetually kind people have a lot

less cortisol (the stress hormone) and age slower than the average population!

KINDNESS CAN REDUCE PAIN: Engaging in acts of kindness produces endorphins—the

brain’s natural painkiller!

KINDNESS CAN INCREASE YOUR LIFESPAN: People who help others and volunteer their

time tend to experience fewer aches and pains and better health. Studies have

demonstrated that people 55 and older who volunteer for two or more organisations have

a 44% lower likelihood of dying early, even after sifting out other contributing factors such

as physical health, exercise, gender, smoking, and many more. This is reported as a

stronger effect than exercising four times a week!!!

So, kindness has the ability to improve life satisfaction, wellbeing and physical health. And

to reap the benefits, acts of kindness don’t need to be huge. Just share a smile, volunteer

some of your time, give compliments, hold a door open for a stranger. That’s all it takes.

Fit in some practice every week. Build up those kindness “muscles”.

And, did you know that KINDNESS IS CONTAGIOUS? The positive effects of kindness are

experienced in the brain of everyone who witnessed the act, improving their mood and

making them significantly more likely to show kindness to others. This means one act of

kindness in a crowded area can create a domino effect and improve the day of many

people! Now, that’s one condition that is worth catching!!!

IF YOU CAN BE ANYTHING IN THIS WORLD…….BE KIND
