Friedman Conference Center 10 Union Square East, 2nd Floor New York, NY 10003 ASL Interpreter Workshop will be delivered in ASL and in spoken English. Advanced knowledge and experience recommended. Parcipants will be asked to discuss and role-play certain scenarios throughout the 4 hour session. MEDICAL INTERPRETING FOR DEAF AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE USERS Deaf American Sign Language (ASL) users, with the combinaon of communicaon and language barriers, are at high risk for poor health communicaon. This populaon suffers a variety of health disparies. Medical interpreng in ASL can help effecvely reduce both communicaon and language barriers, allowing Deaf individuals to receive equal access to good health care. Parcipants will learn about the exisng communicaon and language barriers in the health care system, characteriscs and peculiaries of difficult interpreter situaons, and effecve interpreter strategies to overcome any potenal challenging encounters. Real life stories and scenarios will be used as examples to help facilitate the interpreter workshop. The workshop will be interacve. A variety of medical signs will also be reviewed. McKee, MD, MPH Dr. McKee is an assistant professor at the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Rochester. He also works as a family medicine physician at the Folsom Family Medicine under Lifeme Health. He cares for more than 800 Deaf paents and their families at this clinic. His clinical research focuses on health literacy and health communicaon among Deaf American Sign Language users. He is parcularly interested in learning the effects of poor health communicaon on health care including cardiovascular risk factors to idenfy beer communicaon strategies and tools when interacng with Deaf ASL users. Dr. McKee received a K01 Award (2010-2015) through the Naonal Heart, Lung and Blood Instute to study the effects of health literacy on cardiovascular risk factors for Deaf American Sign Language users. As part of this research, he is developing a new health literacy instrument that is accessible for this populaon. Dr. McKee also works closely the Naonal Center for Deaf Health Research, a Center for Disease Control (CDC) funded Rochester Prevenon Research Center. He is involved with the Deaf Health Community Commiee and the Task Force on Health Care Careers for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community. He also provides monthly “Deaf Health Talks,” a community health educaonal program available for the Deaf community. Register at
