Operation. AccuGrade Cross Slope is agrade control system designed to controlsurface cross slope. Machine-mountedsensors are used to calculate necessaryblade slope positioning to achievedesired cross slope of the surface. The system makes automatic adjustmentsto the left or right lift cylinder, typicallyperformed by the operator. AccuGradeCross Slope delivers all the informationthe operator needs to quickly and easilyspread or cut material at the correctcross slope to the in-cab display. The operator can select which sideof the blade to control automaticallyand swap direction on the returnpass without readjusting the settings.Elevation is controlled manually bymatching grade, or automatically byadding an elevation control device.

Cross Slope System. The basic crossslope system automatically controls theslope of the blade to maintain desiredsurface cross slope.

Cross Slope with Elevation Control.AccuGrade Cross Slope can be combinedwith one or more of the AccuGradeelevation control technologies, such asAccuGrade Sonic, AccuGrade Laser,AccuGrade GPS, or AccuGrade ATSfor automatic control of elevation andcross slope.

Machine-Mounted Sensors. AccuGradeCross Slope uses three machine-mountedsensors – a blade slope sensor, mainfallsensor, and rotation sensor – to calculatenecessary blade adjustments to achievedesired cross slope of the surfaceperpendicular to the direction of travel.

• Blade Slope Angle Sensor. The bladeslope angle sensor is mounted at theback of the circle. It is used to measurethe slope of the blade.

• Mainfall Sensor. The mainfall sensoris mounted to the machine frame orchassis. It measures pitch of the machine, which is used to calculate the crossslope. This is the same type of sensorused to measure blade slope angle.

• Blade Rotation Sensor. The rotationsensor is mounted on the hydraulichydra-valve swivel and measures circlerotation or blade rotation to calculatecross slope.

System Accuracy. The cross slopesystem offers selectable accuracies formatching tolerances to specific gradeand application requirements.

Operation. AccuGrade Sonic is a gradecontrol system designed to controlsurface elevation. The sonic systemuses an ultrasonic sensor to maintainthe blade at the same relative verticaldistance to an external reference, such as a string line or curb and gutter. The system makes automatic elevationadjustments typically performed bythe operator when in cross slope onlycontrol. The operator simply steers themachine to maintain the sensor over theexternal reference.

Single Sonic System. When combinedwith AccuGrade Cross Slope, the singlesystem provides automatic bladeadjustments to one side of the bladefor automatic control of elevation andcross slope.

Dual Sonic System. When two sonicsensors are used, the system providesautomatic elevation control to eitherside of the blade. The system typicallyuses only one sensor at a time. This allows the operator to controlwhich side of the blade to controland change direction withoutrelocating sensors.

Sonic Sensor. The ultrasonic elevationsensor is secured to an L-shaped polethat can be mounted above either endof the blade. The sensor locks onto andtraces a string line, previous pass, curband gutter, existing road surface, orpreviously cut ground via ultrasonic

sound waves. A sound pulse is emittedfrom the sonic sensor to the physicalreference. The sound wave is bouncedback to the sensor, which measuresthe elevation. The sensor matchesthe physical reference; therefore, external reference accuracy caneffect system accuracy.

Grade Display. The sonic displayfunctions as a stand-alone grade displayand provides visual feedback to theoperator. The grade display is locatedon the front panel of the sonic sensorand shows where the blade is relativeto grade. Amber LED arrows indicate“above grade” and “below grade”;green indicates “on-grade”.

In-Cab 2D Display. The in-cabdisplay/control box delivers all systeminformation to the cab. Grade displayindicators provide vertical guidance tothe operator and indicate which directionto move the blade to achieve grade. The monitor numerically displayscut/fill requirements.

Operation. AccuGrade Laser is anelevation control system designed forprecise grade control with tight tolerancesusing a laser transmitter and receiver.

A laser transmitter is set up on the worksite and creates a constant grade referenceover the work area. A digital laserreceiver is mounted on the machine andsenses the laser signal as the machinemoves across the work site.

The system captures elevationinformation and calculates the bladeadjustments necessary to achieve grade. The system makes automatic elevationadjustments typically performed by theoperator and provides automatic bladecontrol to one or both sides of the blade. The operator simply steers the machine. The system also calculates cut/fillrequirements for manual blade control.

Single Laser System. When combinedwith AccuGrade Cross Slope, the singlelaser system provides automatic bladeadjustments to one side of the bladefor automatic control of elevation andcross slope.

Dual Laser System. When two laserreceivers are used, the system providesautomatic elevation control to bothsides of the blade for fine grading withtighter tolerances.

Laser Transmitter. A laser transmitteris mounted on a tripod so the laserbeam can rotate unobstructed above themachine. The laser transmits a plane oflight above the work area, which allowsseveral machines to work effectively inany direction using one laser transmitter.

Laser Receiver. A digital laser receiveris mounted on an electric mast abovethe cutting edge and is used to detectthe laser beam. The receiver picks upthe position of the laser’s referenceplane position relative to finish gradeand measures height deviation fromthe on-grade location to the laserbeam strike. The receiver sends bladeposition information back to the systemto calculate necessary adjustments.A full 360 degree laser detection rangeallows the receiver to pick up the lasersignal from any direction on the worksite while the machine is working.

Electric Mast. An electrically adjustabletelescopic mast is used for mounting thelaser receiver above the blade’s cuttingedge. A mast riser is used to raise themast above the drawbar circle. The mastis powered by an electric motor, whichallows the operator to raise and lowerthe mast from inside the cab to preciselyposition the receiver above the cab forunobstructed laser reception.

Operation. AccuGrade GPS usesadvanced Global Positioning System(GPS) technology to deliver preciseblade positioning information to the cab.Using machine-mounted components,an off-board GPS base station and RealTime Kinematic (RTK) positioning,GPS provides the information necessaryfor the system to accurately determineblade positioning with centimeterlevel accuracy.

AccuGrade GPS computes the positioninginformation on the machine, comparesthe position of the blade relative to thedesign plan and delivers that informationto the operator via an in-cab display.Information such as: blade elevation;how much cut/fill is necessary to achieve

grade, visual indication of the blade’sposition on the design surface and agraphical view of the design plan withmachine location.

AccuGrade GPS puts all the informationthe operator needs to complete the jobin the cab, resulting in a greater level ofcontrol. Vertical and horizontal guidancetools visually guide the operator todesired grade.

Automated features allow the hydraulicsystem to automatically control bladeadjustments to move the blade to grade. The operator simply uses the light barsto steer the machine for consistent, accurate grades and slopes resultingin higher productivity with less fatigue.

Single GPS System. When combinedwith AccuGrade Cross Slope, the singleGPS system provides 3D grade controlacross the full width of the blade. The system uses a 3D position fromthe GPS receiver in combination withinformation from the cross slope sensorson the machine to automatically controlelevation and cross slope.

Dual GPS System. The dual AccuGradeGPS system provides 3D grade controlacross the full width of the blade. The dual GPS receiver configurationallows the system to automaticallycontrol blade adjustments for automaticcontrol of elevation and cross slope.

GPS Receiver. A GPS receiver ismounted on a mast above the cuttingedge. GPS satellite signals are receivedby the GPS receiver to generatea 3D position. This information,in conjunction with machine dimensioninformation, is used to determine theprecise horizontal and vertical positionof the blade in real-time.

Mast. A rugged aluminum mast is usedfor mounting the GPS receiver abovethe blade’s cutting edge for optimumGPS satellite reception.

Radio. The communications radio ismounted on the cab of the machineto ensure maximum signal reception. The radio receives real-time CompactMeasurement Record (CMR) datafrom the GPS base station radio forcalculating high-accuracy GPS positions.

Radio broadcast frequencies work inall weather conditions. This allowsAccuGrade GPS to accurately controlblade operation in fog, dust and at night.

In-Cab 3D Display. The in-cab graphicaldisplay/control box with keypad allowsthe operator to interface with the systemusing push buttons and a color monitor. As the machine operates the operatorcan view information in real-time, suchas machine location, blade position andelevation relative to the design plan. The system uses 3D design files that arestored on a compact flash data card andinserted into a slot below the keypad.

This display supports all AccuGradesystems except laser, which uses a2D display/control box.

Light Bars. Three light bars are mountedin the machine cab and provide verticaland horizontal guidance to the operator.

• Two vertical guidance light barsvisually indicate where the bladetips are relative to grade.

• The horizontal guidance light barindicates blade location relative tothe selected horizontal alignment.

Controls. The controls are located onthe levers in the cab. They are used toactivate the automatic/manual operatingmodes and increment/decrement switches.

GPS Satellites. Positioning informationfrom GPS satellites is received by theGPS base station and the machinemounted GPS receivers. The satellitesconstantly transmit their positions, identities and times of signal broadcasts.

GPS Base Station. The GPS base stationis located within radio range of thework site. It consists of a GPS receiver,GPS antenna and radio. The horizontalposition (latitude, longitude) and thevertical position (height) of the basestation are fixed to known referencepoints. The base station receivesinformation from the GPS satellites. This information, along with the basestation’s known position is sent to themachine via the communication radioand is used by the machine’s GPSreceivers to calculate centimeter levelaccuracy positioning.

3D Design Software. Flat and slopingplanar surface design files can be createdon board the machine. More complexdesigns require 3D design software.Typically, engineering and surveyingfirms create complex 3D site designs.

Office Software. The office softwaremanages and converts engineeringsurvey data for use in machine format. It is the interface between the machinesystem, site managers and designengineers. Design data is exportedfrom the office software onto a datacard for use by the AccuGrade system.

Trimble® SiteVision™ Office is therecommended software for managingand converting design files.

Operation. AccuGrade ATS is a high-accuracy dynamic tracking system thatuses an Advanced Tracking Sensor(ATS) to track a machine and monitorblade positioning. An ATS instrumenton the work site is used to track a target, which is mounted on the blade of themachine, to determine precise 3Dpositioning.

Active target technology allows thesystem to reliably lock onto and trackthe intended target. This ensures thecorrect machine is being tracked andeliminates false lock-ons to otheractive machine targets, survey crews,or reflective surfaces. Built-in searchintelligence allows the system toquickly search for and find the targetwhen the lock is lost due to a passingvehicle or other interruption.

The ATS instrument continuouslymeasures the target’s position andtransmits real-time positioning datato the operator via the in-cab display, which shows the exact position of theblade in relation to the design.

The system combines the position ofthe target with the known position ofthe instrument, machine measurementsand sensor outputs to calculate precisepositioning of the blade tips. The systemuses the positioning data to calculatedesired elevation and cross slope.Cut and fill values are computed bycomparing the position of the bladewith the design file. The system makesautomatic blade adjustments typicallyperformed by the operator and providesautomatic blade control to one or bothcutting edge tips.

AccuGrade ATS puts the informationthe operator needs to complete the jobin the cab. The operator simply steersthe machine to achieve fine gradesurfaces with high-precision accuracy.

ATS System. When combined withAccuGrade Cross Slope, the ATSsystem provides automated bladeadjustments to one or both sides ofthe blade for automatic control ofboth elevation and cross slope.

ATS Instrument. The ATS instrumentis a robotic total station that makeshigh-precision measurements of theazimuth, altitude and distance to thetarget. Specially designed servomotorswork with the tracking software toallow the instrument to track a targetmoving at typical machine speeds. If thetarget is lost, the instrument predicts thespeed the target is moving so it canrelocate the target.

ATS Target. An ATS target is mountedon an electric mast above the motorgrader cutting edge. The target hasan LED, which is the target for thetracking system, and a prism, whichis the target for the electronic distancemeasuring (EDM) system. The prismand LED must be in perfect verticalalignment, so the instrument canlocate and track the target, andmeasure the distance.

Electric Mast. An electrically adjustabletelescopic mast is used for mounting thetarget above the blade’s cutting edge.A mast riser is used to raise the mastabove the drawbar circle. The mast ispowered by an electric motor, whichallows the operator to raise and lowerthe mast from inside the cab for precisepositioning of the target above the cabfor unobstructed ATS signal reception.

Radio. Two communications radios areused to form a radio link between theATS instrument and the machine. The radio on the ATS instrument isused to send target position informationto the radio on the machine. The radiolink also allows the operator to sendoperation commands from the AccuGradesystem on the machine back to theATS unit.
