Reduced Exhaust Smoke. The ADEM A4 controller readselectronic sensors to determine theoptimum fuel/air ratio. Fuel is preciselycontrolled during cranking, starting andacceleration to reduce smoke. The EngineElectronics are faster and more efficientthan mechanically controlling thegovernor rack position.

Ether Starting Aid. The ADEM A4controller activates the ether injectionsystem during engine cranking toenhance cold weather starting.

Control Throttle Shifting (CTS).Automatically synchronizes enginespeed to transmission speed duringshifting to reduce power train stress andincrease component life. In addition itresults in a smoother ride for the operator.

Directional Shift Management.Regulates engine speed to preventdamage caused by high-speeddirectional changes.

Low Battery Elevated Idle. The ADEM A4 controller automaticallycompensates for low alternator outputat low idle by raising the rpm forbrief intervals to keep the batteriesfully charged.

Altitude Compensation. The systemde-rates fuel delivery as a function ofbarometric pressure as sensed by thesystem’s atmospheric pressure sensor. No manual adjustment is required.Auto deration prevents excessivecombustion temperatures that couldresult in component damage.

Diagnostic Capability. Cat® ElectronicTechnician (Cat ET) is used to displayreal-time pressures, temperatures, fuelsettings and diagnostic messages aswell as a historical information such asengine over-speeds, overheating, low oilpressure and air filter restriction events.

Fuel Economy. Electronic controlsoptimize the timing setting for varyingload conditions. The ADEM A4controller matches timing to the load onthe engine, engine rpm and temperature.

Air Filter Restriction. ADEM A4controller monitors air filter restrictionand sends a warning message to theElectronic Monitoring System (EMS III)to alert the operator if the restrictionexceeds the allowable limit.

Automatic Belt Tensioning. Both thetractor and scraper engines haveautomatic belt tensioning rather thanmanual tensioning. The number of beltshas been reduced to two on the tractor, and two on the scraper. Fan drivebearings both the tractor and scraperengines with ACERT™ technologyeliminate servicing requirements.

Transmission. Electronically controlledCaterpillar planetary powershifttransmission with eight forward andone reverse speed. Tractor gears 1 & 2operate in converter drive for increasedtorque capability during cut and filloperations. Gears 3-8 operate in direct-drive for drive train efficiency duringthe haul. All scraper gears operate inconverter drive for increased torquecapability during the cut and fill.

Synchronized Scraper Transmission. The scraper transmission is electronicallycontrolled by the tractor transmission, synchronizing the scraper transmissiongear selection with that of the tractortransmission. The scraper transmissioncannot be shifted manually. A neutral/runswitch, located in the cab, allows theoperator to disengage the scrapertransmission.

Planetary Design. Provides largercontact area between gears thancountershaft transmissions for greaterload-carrying capacity.

Transmission Hold. Incorporated into thejoystick controller, Transmission Holdallows the operator to maintain converterdrive for increased rimpull, or hold thecurrent gear for enhanced control.

Programmable Top Gear Selection.Allows the operator to manually set thetop gear (3rd – 8th) available to matchconditions or to match the hauling speedof the fleet to specific job-site needs.

Retarder. The hydraulic retarder can beused to slow the ground speed of themachine when entering the cut or fillarea to allow the transmission todownshift. It also reduces service brakewear and enhances machine control.

Differential Control. Electronic differentiallock helps prevent the drive wheelsfrom spinning in poor underfootconditions. The operator engages thedifferential lock with a foot controllocated in the cab.

Neutral Coast Inhibitor. Prevents thetransmission from shifting into neutralif the operator selects neutral whilemoving. The transmission control willselect the proper gear for the givenengine rpm and ground speed.

Final Drives. Outboard-mounted,planetary design final drives reducetorque loads on other power traincomponents. Large-capacity, double-row roller bearings and CaterpillarDuo-Cone® seals deliver exceptionalreliability in the toughest applications.

Independent Brake Systems.Expanding-shoe type brakes use acam-operated design, which is air-appliedand spring released. The secondarybraking system uses independent frontand rear circuits that are automaticallyapplied if the service air pressure dropsto 380 kPa (55 psi). Audible and visualaction alert indicators inform the operatorwhen the service air pressure drops to518 kPa (75 psi).

Parking Brakes. The push-buttonoperated parking brake features aspring-applied, air-released mechanismthat operates the service brakes.

Steering. Full hydraulic power steeringprovides automotive feel with positive, modulated flow control for constantsteering response. An optional secondarysteering system is ground-driven andprovides hydraulic power for steeringif needed.

Weights (approximate)

20 657G Wheel Tractor Scraper specifications

Retarding

To determine retarding performance: Read from gross weightdown to the percent effective grade. (Effective grade equalsactual percent grade minus 1% for each 9 kg/t (20 lb/ton) ofrolling resistance). From this weight-effective grade point, read horizontally to the curve with the highest obtainablespeed range, then down to maximum descent speed theretarder can properly handle.

Gradeability/Speed/Rimpull

To determine gradeability performance: Read from grossweight down to the percent of total resistance. Total resistanceequals actual percent grade plus 1% for each 9 kg/t (20 lb/ton)of rolling resistance. From this weight-resistance point, readhorizontally to the curve with the highest obtainable gear, thendown to maximum speed. Usable rimpull will depend upontraction available and weight on drive wheels.
