This collection was edited and laid out by Anamika Nandy Das, Purnima Rao and Michael Creighton. Hindi to English translations by Purnima Rao and Sujit Prasad.

Poems in this collection were written as part of a month-long poetry workshop with Upper Group members of the The Community Library Project. Sessions were bilingual, in Hindi and English and drew heavily on Kenneth Koch’s Wishes Lies and Dreams: Teaching Children to Write Poetry.

This magazine was first published in 2016. It is Open Source—use it and share it in any way that supports teaching, learning, or reading. Acknowledgement appreciated.

India’s open fields are like a clothing-dump. Rapid-fire rap is like a Bullet bike’s speed. Hair as black as a mole. The kabadiwala’s cry is like the honking of a car. Stars as bright as the straw’s flight. Salman Khan’s stride is like a punctured tyre.

The lion’s roar is like a flash of lightning. The koel’s song is like a mother’s lullaby. The peacock’s dance is like Kolkata’s sweets. Diwali’s firecrackers are like the schoolmaster’s slap. Flowers’ scent is like the perfume of books. The colours of the rainbow are like our lives.

This chutney is as sharp as Mother’s slap. The field is as empty as the sky. Jalebi is as sweet as a lion’s love. The bullock cart is slow like an insect. The metro is as fast as the wind. Paan is as sweet as jalebi.

I got tangled like the screen-door in my friend’s house. Delhi’s sweets are like someone’s love. The Qutab Minar is tall like a lion’s roar. My cycle is as fast as someone else’s car. My friend’s cheeks are like a dog’s coat.

तािक म] अपने देश म( कहx भी लड़ाईयL नहx होने देता {2िक उससे बहुत शोर होता है।

बहुत लोग सोने के Vलए परेशान हो जाते ह] इसीVलए म] िकसी पर लड़ाईयL नहx होने देता।

और म] सबसे बोलता िक म] हँू मैने िफर एक झूठ बोला िक मैने एक kचNड़या देखी वो बोल

सकती थी।

तभी मैने एक आवाज सुनी िक कोई मुझे बुला रहा है।

I wish I were rich so I could build a house for myself. I would fall asleep peaceful- ly and in my dreams I could become a king so that I could stop all the fighting in my country, because that causes a lot of noise. Many people have trouble sleeping. That’s why I don’t allow anyone to fight. And I tell everyone I am rich. Then I tell a lie that I saw a talking bird. Suddenly I heard a voice that was calling me. The End.

काश म] अमीर होता तो म] अपने पास के पड़ोसी को भगा देता वे Nदनभर शोर करते

रहते, रात को भी वे शोर मचाते जैसे कोई महा युध शु| हो गया हो।

एक Nदन म] बहुत गहरH नxद म( सो गया तो मैने अपने सपने म( देखा िक म] राजा बन गया

और म] सबको आदेश दे रहा हँू।

जब म] सो रहा था तब कोई शोर नहx मचा रहा था।

तभी मुझे लगा िक जैसे ज}त म( सो रहा हँू और तभी बहुत तेज आवाज आई जैसे कोई

लोहार लोहा तोड़ रहा है। तब म] नxद से जाग गया, तभी मैने देखा िक म] घर पर हँू।

उसी समय मेरH नxद टूट गयी और म] आग बबूला हो गयाए और मैने अपने पड़ोसी को

बोला िक जो शोर मचाते ह] उसे शेर खा जाता है।

तभी से वे शोर नहx मचा रहे थे, और मैने झूठ बोल Nदया।

I wish I were rich so I could get rid of my neighbours, who make such a ruckus all day long, as if they were fighting a great battle. One day, I fell into deep sleep and I dreamt I had become a king and I was ordering everyone around. When I slept, no one made a sound and, in that moment, I felt like I was in paradise. And then I heard a loud noise like when a blacksmith strikes iron. I woke up and I found my- self in my house. My slumber broke and I felt red-hot anger. I told my neighbour that those who make noise get eaten up by lions. Since then, they’ve not made a sound and I told a lie.

तारे बजा रहे थे ताली

और तभी Salman Khan आया और बोला मुझे भी दे दे थोड़ी सी जगह

अभी Vसघंासन पड़ा है पूरा खाली

िफर म] और ऋ@तक रोशन चल पड़े orbit पर

िफर जा पहंुचे सूरज के अंदर जहL थी

बहुत गमf , िफर मैने पाया अपने आप को

Once upon a time, I found myself inside the ocean Whales were teaching me to dance When I surfaced I saw everything was topsy-turvy The clouds were singing on the ground and my friend was reading on the moonI sat alone on a throne of stars The stars applauded Just then Salman Khan came and said, “Scoot over a bit , there’s so much space on the throne!” So Hrithik Roshan and I are made our way into orbit and landed up inside the sun, Where it was very hot And then I found myself inside my bed.

Last night at 12 noon I was with Roald Dahl In his play Romeo & Juliet There I saw Michael Sir as Juliet , he was wearing a gown, And Mridula Ma’am as Romeo As in the play, Romeo and Juliet were dying, I started crying But suddenly an Epic happened and I was not crying My mom was trying to wake me up By throwing water on my face And I realised I was in my dreamland that time.

Once I was went to New York There I heard the sound of beating flowers I wished he could feel the beating. Then I saw a fashion designer It was night. I dreamed that I was a superstar I was making a film on ‘The Star’ I was having one crore When I opened my eyes, I wished to be that Then it was study time, I studied history In which I was comparing Empire and Kingdom Which one was bigger – Empire or Kingdom

Very slowly, I’m going into my dream. In it I see that I am in a jungle. I can hear many sounds of animals and birds. I wish I could stay here forever. And I won- der, is this jungle better or is my home better? But here, along with the happy sounds, there is one bad thing. There is a blue-faced demon, who feeds on the hair of others. Suddenly, I wake up and I think – there can’t be a better place than my home.

जल गयी थी, तो म] चLद पर से सीधा कूद गया। वैसे ही म] उस तारे पर चढ़ गया। मेरे

जेब म( बहुत बड़ा हथोड़ा था और मैने देखा अभी पृी तो बहुत दूर थी, तो म] हथोड़े से

तोड़ने लगा। जैसे ही वह टूट गया और म] नीचे जाते जाते Jगर गया। वैसे ही मेरH आँख

खुली और मुझे पता चला म] सपने म( था।

I dreamed I went to the moon and was terrified as a star rushed towards me with great speed. I ducked out of the way but the star gained even more speed as it hurtled towards the earth. My rocket had already burned up so I jumped straight off the moon. In the same way, I jumped up on the star and found a big hammer in my pocket. At the same time I found the earth was still very far away. So I started hacking away at the star with my hammer. As soon as it broke, I found myself falling. As I found myself dying, I woke up and found that it had all been a dream.
