part of teDxYouth@Monterey this November 19 th. the curatorial team
and planning committee are excited about the creativity and talent
in our speaker line-up! as you know, youll be presenting to youth
ranging in age from 13 to 20-years-olds from across Monterey County
and the Central Coast. You may have also heard that our event will
be video-recorded and live streamed worldwide! in this toolkit,
youll find a short background guide to teD and teDxYouth@Monterey,
preparation tips, the teDx Commandments and technological
specifications. For promotional purposes, please keep in mind that
this event is independently organized under a license from teD. it
is not teD proper. Please make that distinction when youre
spreading your exciting news. We offer our full support, and well
work with you to develop a comfortable, meaningful and dynamic

YOUR TEDxYouth@MONTEREY talkHave you ever noticed how easy teD
speakers make presenting at a teD event seem? Make no mistake, the
key of these spectacular talks is hours of preparation, practice,
revision and memorization. We will schedule time with all speakers,
helping you prepare for your teDxYouth presentations. Please note
we are committed to creating an atmosphere of inclusivity. to
facilitate this, speakers are encouraged to stay for the whole
conference and to mingle with youth participating during
breaks.
PREPARATION
Presentation Development and CoachingteDxYouth@Monterey will
engage all presenters in a series of consultations and
conversations to help you prepare and deliver an inspiring talk.
this process will allow you to actively revise and practice your
talk in order to craft a presentation that works within the
constraints of the format constraints that are designed to help
spark creative communication.
TIPS
Planning Your Presentation1) explore teD talks to familiarize
yourself with the signature format. 2) keep it personal and on
message. take emotional risks; be authentic and vulnerable. 3) tell
a story. 4) Go deep rather than broad. Break away from giving a
speech and remember that youre sharing an idea that youre
passionate about. 5) remember, teD supports ideas worth spreading:
absolutely no corporate plugs from the stage and no company
videos.

Presentation Delivery1) Stay within the allotted time. We are
committed to keeping the presentations between 3 and 10 minutes.
the curatorial team will work closely with presenters to determine
the appropriate duration of your speech /performance. On the big
day, a visible timer will be used to help you stay on time. 2)
Speak with your audience and not to them. For example, ask
rhetorical questions throughout the talk ( So what would that
mean...?). ask actual questions throughout the talk (Does anybody
here know what...?). 3) Smile and make eye contact. 4) Move around
the stage, when you can, and be as energetic as possible.

These commandments are part of every ted talk.1) Dream big.
Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. reveal
something never seen before. Do something the audience will
remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world. 2)
Show us the real you. Share your passions, your dreams...and also
your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure as well as success. 3)
Make the complex plain. Dont try to dazzle intellectually. Dont
speak in abstractions. explain! Give examples. tell stories. Be
specific. 4) Connect with peoples emotions. Make us laugh! Make us
cry!
TED COMMANDMENTS
5) Dont flaunt your ego. Dont boast. its the surest way to
switch everyone off. 6) No selling from the stage! unless we have
specifically asked you to, do not talk about your company or
organization. and please refrain from pitching your products or
services or asking for funding from stage. 7) Feel free to comment
on other speakers, to praise or to criticize. Controversy
energizes! enthusiastic endorsement is powerful! 8) If possible,
dont read your talk. Notes are fine. But if the choice is between
reading or rambling, then read! 9) You must end your talk on time.
Doing otherwise is to steal time from the people that follow you.
We wont allow it. 10) Rehearse your talk in front of a trusted
friend...for timing, for clarity, for impact.

a simple, elegant background behind your text should be used to
complement and enhance the readability of your words. if using a
dark or black background, you may want to make the text bold.

graphs, graphics & photosuse high-resolution pictures and
graphics. Full-quality photos from a digital camera will look
better than images pulled off the web. You must properly license
all images for teDs use in worldwide video and web distribution.
Dont grab images from the web unless they are clearly licensed
under Creative Commons for use. For data graphs or charts, be sure
to follow the minimum font size guidelines above for all text,
including labels on x-and y-axes and data points.
Less is morea single, strong, graphic image or succinct line of
text will tell your story better than a crowded collage or packed
paragraph. remember, people need to process everything youre saying
while simultaneously absorbing your slides. rather than one complex
slide, show several slides, each with one idea, image or data
point. Please eliminate slides that are essentially
Headline+Bullet-Points. these can get very tired.
