Speakers’ Profile Ms Zoë ARDEN Director, SustainAbility Zoë is a director of the advisory firm and think tank SustainAbility that was founded 28 years ago by John Elkington, the creator of the Triple Bottom Line concept (‘people, planet and profit’). She supports global firms with their responsible business strategy and engagement. She has deep expertise in stakeholder convening and has led meetings globally for clients including Michelin, Nestlé and Barclays in Indonesia, Germany, France and the UK. She teaches stakeholder engagement on Cambridge University’s Sustainability Leadership Masters’ programme and has facilitated workshops in Hong Kong with Barclays, MTR and the Hong Kong Management Association. She has recently completed research in Asia on how companies are integrating sustainability. Previously, she was director of communications and CSR at telecommunications giant BT Retail where she spearheaded the sustainability strategy and was the CEO’s representative on the pan-BT Environment and Climate Change Taskforce. She started her career working with Apple Computer in Europe and the US and doing the communications for other consumer electronics brands like Palm, Pioneer and Samsung. She has launched initiatives for Business in the Community including a consumer-facing sustainability campaign with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales called START. For the Mayor of London, she developed stakeholder engagement plans for flagship climate change initiatives. She has been director of sustainability for global marketing communications business MSL (Publicis), managing director of consultancies Weber Group Europe and GolinHarris, and vice president of San Francisco-based Access Communications. Ms Zoë ARDENDirector, SustainAbility

Dr Eric SUBEC Board Director, General Manager - Engineering, Hongkong International Terminals Limited

In his role as General Manager – Engineering, Dr Su oversees the procurement and maintenance of cranes, equipment, and civil and building facilities at Hongkong International Terminals Limited.

Other than his work at the container terminals in Hong Kong, Dr Su has led the civil construction and equipment procurement at various container ports in China, including in Shanghai, Shenzhen and Suzhou. Mr Elvis AU, JPDeputy Chairman of the Environmental Division of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers

Mr Elvis Au, JP, is currently the Assistant Director of Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. He is now responsible for nature conservation policy and waste infrastructure planning programmes, including the planning and development of integrated waste management facilities, organic waste treatment facilities, food waste management strategy and plans, nature conservation policy and programmes including biodiversity, country parks and marine parks. He was previously in charge of EIA and environmental planning policy, energy policy, water quality policy and sewage programme, and green procurement policy. Mr Au is a Fellow of Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Planners and the former President of the International Association for Impact Assessment. He is now the Deputy Chairman of the Environmental Division of HKIE and the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals.

Dr Vincent CHENGDirector of Building Sustainability, ARUP

Dr Cheng has over 20 years of professional experience in building energy efficiency. He has extensive knowledge in District Cooling System (DCS) and is currently the Project Director of both the EMSD’s consultancy study on the implementation of DCS at Kai Tak Development as well as WKCDA’s Stage 1 implementation and scheme design of the WKCD DCS.

Dr Cheng also specializes in sustainable master planning, low/ zero carbon design, LEED & BEAM Plus certification, life-cycle analysis and Air Ventilation Assessment. He has been involved in more than 60 LEED and BEAM Plus projects in the Region. Dr Cheng is a HKPGBC council member and also a member in the advisory committee of School of Energy and Environment, the City University of Hong Kong.

Ir Chris CHONGManaging Director, Hong Kong District Cooling Co., Limited

Ir Chris Chong is the Managing Director of Hong Kong District Cooling Company Limited, a subsidiary of Veolia - one of the largest environmental companies in the world. Chris has been working in the energy sector for more than 20 years. In the past 10 years, he developed and operated four district cooling systems in Hong Kong, China and Macau - with a total capacity of around 134,000 Refrigeration Ton. He led a team to design, build and operate the first District Cooling System in the Kai Tak Development in Hong Kong.

Ir Chong holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering and a MBA degree from The University of Hong Kong. He is a Certified Energy Manager, Chartered Engineer and Fellow Member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers and Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the Hong Kong Society of Financial Analysts.

Mr Jonathan DREWManaging Director, Project and Export Finance and Capital Financing, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited

Jonathan Drew is a Managing Director in the Project and Export Finance Group at HSBC. Jonathan graduated with an MA in Economics from Cambridge University in England and is also qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Jonathan started his banking career more than 20 years ago in London and after working in rapidly emerging Latin America and on capital intensive transactions in the Middle East has been based in Hong Kong since 1997 witnessing first-hand the rapid growth of Asia and notably China. During this time he has been involved in successful transactions across a wide range of sectors including advising on and arranging finance for projects that produce and deliver energy (renewable and non-renewable) and transport people and resources from source to point of consumption as well as a wide range of infrastructure projects in social and education sectors with a focus on resource efficiency and sustainability. These transactions have involved supporting projects, corporates and institutions to approach various financial markets and structuring innovative and tailored products including green bonds to meet the often large and specific needs of clients in markets with very distinct financial and regulatory characteristics.

Dr Wing-Tat HUNGAssociate Professor, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Dr Hung Wing-tat is currently an associate professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He lectures transport infrastructure development and its environmental impacts. His research interests fall in the areas of vehicle emissions, highway noise and safety as well as large infrastructure development. In his over 25 years of academic career, Dr Hung publishes widely in referred journals, books, conferences and local paper columns. Dr Hung is also active in many professional bodies, including the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Hong Kong Society for Transportation Studies as well as the environmental group Conservancy Association. He was also expert advisors to the Hong Kong 2030 Study and the Planning Study on the co-ordinated development of the Greater Pearl River Delta townships. He is currently a member of the Advisory Council on the Environment. He involved in many Government projects on vehicle emission control including a) alternative fuels for taxi and minibuses; b) low cost after-treatment devices for small diesel vehicles; c) diesel catalyst for heavy duty diesel vehicles d) the pilot transport green fund projects and e) low noise pavement surfaces projects.

Mr Alok JAINHead of Planning & Development Department, The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Limited

Alok is currently Head of Planning and Development in The Kowloon Motor Bus Co. (1933) Ltd. (KMB).Prior to joining KMB in 2013, Alok worked as a director of MVA Asia Ltd. and Trans-consult Asia Ltd. where he was involved in the design and planning of various transport infrastructure projects in the Middle-east and Asian regions. Having lived in Hong Kong for more than 20 years, Alok spent over half of this time with MTRC / KCRC holding various positions in Engineering, Finance, Operations, and Marketing. He was also a nominated director of Octopus group of companies.

Alok played an active role in a number of other business organizations and worked in many countries during his career. With several publications to his credit including contribution to a book on best practices in railways operations and management, he is a regular speaker on smart mobility, multi-modal integration, public transport operations, and pricing. He is an Assistant Professor (part-time) in the Urban Planning Department at University of Hong Kong, and serves as a Member in Transport Policy Committee of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong.Alok is a Civil Engineer with postgraduate in Transportation Engineering and an MBA.

Mr Travis KANDirector, Marketing & Business Development, Schneider Electric Hong Kong

Travis Kan started his engineer career in CLP Power HK, he then joined General Electric (GE) as Sales Manager with last position Account Director, managing GE Energy Services Hong Kong business, covering Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution, and Control Solutions.

In 2013, he joined Schneider Electric, currently in the position of Marketing &Business Development Director, drives business strategy and transformation, marketing, and Digital Customer Experience programs.

Travis received his Master Degree of Philosophy and Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from The University of Hong Kong. He is also a part-time lecturer for VTC HK and RMIT University (Australia).

Ms Janice LAOSustainability Manager, MTR Corporation Limited

Janice Lao leads the sustainability team at MTR Corporation, catalyzing and coordinating sustainability initiatives – environment, workplace, customer and supply chain - and encompassing its different businesses from rail operations, property, construction and international/other businesses.

She has received international recognition for her work and leadership in this field including the 2014 FWN Global Most Influential Women of the Year – Emerging Leader; 2015 Global Sustainable Leadership Award; shortlisted in the 2015 Edie Sustainability Leaders Award (Sustainability Professionals Award) and a fellow of the Pioneers for Change Fellowship Programme in the United Kingdom.

Her expertise lies in embedding a strategic sustainability approach into business. She has worked at Unilever, World Resources Institute, ERM, Cathay Pacific and Swire. Her international work experience has taken her around the Asia-Pacific, North American and European regions. She graduated with an MSc on Environmental Change and Management from the University of Oxford and a diploma in business from the University of Oxford Said Business School.

Dr Peter LEEChief Technology Officer, Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited

Dr Peter Lee joined NAMI in October 2009 as Chief Technology Officer after more than 20 years in the US working in the semiconductor and photovoltaic industries.

Dr Lee started his career at Applied Materials, Inc. in 1988, developing and productizing various thin film technologies for the fabrication of advanced logic and memory semiconductor devices. In 2005, he joined a startup company Oraxion which pioneered wafer stress measurement metrology as the VP of Technology and Application. Oraxion was acquired by Ultratech Inc. a year later in 2006, where Peter remained as VP of technical marketing for both the Stress Measurement and also the Laser Anneal Equipment and Technology. He then joined another startup company Archers Systems in 2009, a turnkey solar manufacturing equipment company, developing amorphous Si thin film CVD technology and equipment.

Dr Lee received his BSc degree in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from University of California at Berkeley and his Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from University of Minnesota where his research focused on MOCVD of GaAs. He has over 30 publications and holds more than 30 patents.

Dr David LEUNGDirector of Syn-Tech Fuel Management & Technology Co. Ltd.

David has been working in the field of Chemistry for over 28 years.  He started to focus his research on the “After-Market-Fuel-Additive” in 1995.  By 2007, he has developed the Diesel Additive and was introduced to Tuen Mun’s Fishing Vessels.  After 5 years of painstakingly market exploring efforts, the “Diesel Additive” spoke for itself and began to popularize from 2012. The development of Diesel Additive is a continuous project for Dr Leung.  “Minimizing Exhaust Emission” together with “Fuel Saving” have become his company’s prime task, in order to help sustaining the Greener Future.

Dr Lawrence POONPrincipal Consultant (Automotive and Electronics), Hong Kong Productivity Council

Dr Poon is the Principal Consultant of Automotive Parts and Accessory System R&D Centre and Head of Automotive Unit of Hong Kong Productivity Council. He is also serving as Vice Chair of SAE HK and Section-Chair of HK Bio- & Eco- Energy Industry Association and Fellow of Green Strategy Association. He got the doctoral degree in 2004. His major research interests focus on the development of energy storage systems, electrical vehicle control systems and EV charging infrastructure. In the recent years, Dr Poon took lead a team of professional Engineers and researchers with rich experiences in EV and automotive electronics system development. In the recent years, Dr Poon and his team successfully developed new generation of EV charging network ‘EV-MegaNet’ and also the hybrid battery system for Hong Kong industry. Dr Poon is also a project manager and principal investigator in more than 30 R&D projects related to green transportation, active safety as well as a series of smart mobility applications. In addition to the strong experience in Automotive R&D, Dr Poon also delivered number of consultancy services in product testing to support the automotive parts and accessory systems industry.

Dr Poon graduated with first class honor degree from HKPolyU Mechanical Engineering Department in 1998. In addition to the duty in HKPC and APAS R&D Centre, he is also a visiting lecturer in HKPolyU for number of subjects related to Automotive Safety and Reliability, and Product Design.

Dr Han SHIAssistant Professor, Department of Public Policy, City University of Hong Kong; Adjunct Faculty Member, School of Sustainability, Arizona State University

Dr Shi Han’s ongoing research focuses on the application of eco-industrial development and circular economy and their implications for resource efficiency and climate change in China comparing across different institutional and economic environments.

He received a Ph.D. degree on industrial ecology from Yale University. From 1997 through 2003, he was the founding director of the Beijing-based Centre for Environmentally Sound Technology Transfer. Between 1993 and 1996, he worked at the Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, the secretariat for China’s national sustainable development initiative. Since 1994, he has provided consultancy for United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Centre for Human Settlement (UNCHS), the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank, the European Commission, Global Environment Facility (GEF), AusAID, and German BMBF, as well as multinational corporations.

Ms Patricia WOOPolitical Assistant to the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Hong Kong SAR Government

Patricia Woo is currently Political Assistant to the Secretary for Transport and Housing. She graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and holds a Master of Business Administration degree from University of Warwick, UK and a Master of Science degree from National University of Singapore. During her service in the Government from 1990 – 2010, Ms Woo worked in a number of policy bureaux and departments, including the Trade and Industry Department, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Geneva, the Security Bureau, the Constitutional Affairs Bureau, the Education and Manpower Bureau, the Home Affairs Bureau, and the Central Policy Unit.

In 2010 she left the Government to pursue full-time study in environmental management, and returned to Hong Kong a year later to join the Independent Police Complaints Council as Assistant Secretary-General. She was appointed Political Assistant to Secretary for Transport and Housing in April 2013.

Ir Roberto VAZQUEZChief Executive Officer (Acting), ASB Biodiesel Hong Kong Limited

ASB Biodiesel (Hong Kong) Ltd is a producer of second generation biodiesel. Through its100,000 tons per annum bio-refinery in Tseung Kwan O, Hong Kong, and a network of subsidiaries for waste vegetable oil collection in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, ASB supplies one of the lowers carbon footprint fuels worldwide. It includes cutting edge methanol supercritical technology to be able to convert a wide variety of residual oils.

ASB is a corporate investment of Al Salam Bank-Bahrain (B.S.C.). ASBB is a dynamic, diversified and differentiated Islamic bank. Its corporate investments include in agri-business, alternative energy, aviation, education and healthcare.

Ir Vazquez joined ASB Biodiesel in 2012. With 17 years’ experience, the last 14 in the biodiesel industry, Ir Vazquez has worked in different projects as Project Manager, Engineering Director, Plant General Manager and Chief Technology Officer. Before joining ASB Biodiesel, he completed the successful design and commissioning of a 200,000 ton-per-annum plant in the south of Spain.

As CTO in Hong Kong, Ir Vazquez has completed the 100,000 TPA biodiesel bio-refinery (April 2014), recruited the production and sales team, designed the operations, launched the sales to the leading companies in the sector (Shell, Chevron, Nidera, Petro China), and contributed to develop the waste oil collection activities of the subsidiaries in Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. From September 2014, Ir Vazquez is acting CEO.

He holds an MSc degree in Industrial Engineering, a BS degree in Physics and an Executive MBA from IE Business School in Spain.

Mr David YAUDirector, Operations Department, Vanke Property (Hong Kong) Company Limited

David Yau is a chartered civil engineer with 29 years’ experience in civil engineering, buildings and project management. He is Director of Operations Department with Vanke Property (Hong Kong) Co Ltd to develop their Hong Kong and Singapore development portfolios.

Professionally, David is a fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, a fellow and founding member of HK Institute of Value Management, member of the HK Institution of Engineers, founding member of HK Institute of Building Information Modelling, founding member of buildingSMART Hong Kong and a BEAM Professional.

Ms Maya DE SOUZASenior Manager – Policy Research, Business Environment Council Limited

Maya has worked for over 8 years in environmental policy and sustainability. Prior to joining BEC, Maya worked for the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs leading a number of policy teams, including Soils Policy, Institutional Structures for Flood Risk Management, Greening Government (CSR for the government) and Sustainable Public Procurement, and a short secondment to the Department for Education. She has extensive experience of working with business, the public sector and the wider community in developing environmental policy positions, translating them into practice, and communicating their benefits. Maya’s achievements include implementing EU law on green procurement of energy efficient products, developing tools for public procurement of sustainable and healthy food and low emission vehicles, managing a Soil Policy Research programme, putting in place a new framework for management of flood risk, negotiating EU Directives on soil and contaminated land, and developing a UK soil protection strategy.

Maya has a broad knowledge of environmental policy issues, as well as community engagement and communications through 8 years as a councillor in the London Borough of Camden. She has played a thought leadership role, including developing plans for an integrated approach to flood and water resource management piloted in the UK, writing articles on a low carbon economy as a local councilor, and putting forward proposals on air quality through a councillor working group on air quality.

Before moving into environmental policy, Maya practiced as a lawyer in a commercial London firm and later as an employment lawyer in a specialist law firm, before joining the government as a lawyer where she advised on environmental, European and public law.
