Asset Management for highly energy efficient buildings Cities and towns are responsible for about 75% of energy consumption and 80% of greenhouse gas emissions. High performance buildings consume half the energy of a comparable code-compliant building, but not at the expense of the occupants. This session will be advice packed, provide data and technical information and include case studies, giving delegates practical insights into successfully managing highly efficient, sustainable buildings. Speakers will include Saeed Al Abbar, Director, AESG Afshin Afshari, Professor of Practice at Masdar Institute of Science and Technology Michel Saab, Manager, Sustainability, Masdar EU briefing: Transitioning the electricity sector The future of the energy sector will be shaped largely by the evolution of the electricity sector. In the EU, this will require creating the right investment environment for this energy transition

to come about, more flexible markets that allow more active participation of a much wider range of actors and adapt to the radical change in the structure of the generation pattern. This workshop will provide an overview of the latest progress and achievements of the EU energy policies on the integration of renewables in the electricity sector, and their implications and relevance for other world regions.

Thursday 19 January

9.00-9.30 Networking

9.30-9.35 Welcome to day 3

9.35-9.50 WFES Insights Ras Al Khaimah’s plans for future solar Speaker Nitin Johar, Head of Treasury, Investment and Development Office, RAK Government

9.50-10.20

WFES Insights Distributed solar and the future of utilities: adapting to new market economics As small-scale rooftop solar is more widely adopted on homes, and individuals generate their own electricity and sell the excess back to the grid, the future role of utilities begins to change. With less income from the supply and use of electricity, utilities need to adapt their revenue streams or face smaller, more nimble suppliers taking their business. This session discusses the future role of utilities and how their long-term planning and strategies will change as small-scale renewable energy becomes more ubiquitous.

Speakers will include Jeremy Crane, CEO, Yellow Door Xavier Helgesen, CEO, Off-grid Electrics Michael Taylor, Senior Analyst, Renewable Energy Cost Status and Outlook, Innovation and Technology Center, Irena Martin Dunlea, Industry Strategy, Oracle Utilities Global Business

10.20-10.50 WFES Insights Balancing CSP and PV: The future of hybridised power? Photovoltaic is often coupled with another form of energy to ensure that the electricity supply is constant. Concentrated Solar Power is a strong option for those that need to generate power during the hours of darkness, due to its storage capabilities. This session looks at CSP and PV, and asks how utilities can make them work together, if they should, and if they are becoming serious options to run side-by-side to provide combined peak and off-peak energy. Or is CSP a bridging technology until battery storage coupled with PV becomes ubiquitous?

Moderator: Eithne Treanor, International energy commentator

Speakers will include Nick Carter, Director - Middle East, Baringa Paul van Son, Chairman MENA &Turkey, Innogy, RWE Jennifer DeCesaro, Senior Programme Officer, CSP, Irena Dr. Andrea Lovatto, Chief Business Development Officer, Acwa Power

10.50-10.10

WFES Insights Middle East solar projects overview Renewable energy prices have fallen rapidly in the past few years, with the UAE and Morocco each at times having the lowest tariff prices in the world for planned photovoltaic and CSP solar schemes. This section of WFES will outline some of the upcoming projects, and will start with a forward-looking regional overview from the Middle East Solar Industry Association on planned solar projects.

Speaker Wim Alen, Secretary General, Middle East Solar Industry Association

10.10-11.25 WFES Insights Projects market overview: Jordan This session will bring together some of the countries with exciting renewable energy projects plans to discuss the their plans and timelines for tendering, awarding or completing installations Speakers will include Eng. Ziad Jebril Sabra, Director of Renewable Energy Department, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Jordan

11.25-11.40 WFES Insights New market opportunities for renewables in South East Asia This session will provide a focus on the renewable energy business opportunities in the region, discussing which countries are pushing ahead with projects.

Speaker Jae Lemin, Partner, Eversheds

11.40-12.00 Networking break

12.00-13.15 WFES Insights Sustainable Cities: Methods of Measurement Sustainable cities are designed around the needs of the people who live and work in them. They strive to become more sustainable through their buildings, transport, energy and waste networks. This session will look at the central pillars of developing sustainable cities.
