WEEKLY REPORT — WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 2019

JUNE 12 EVENTS

President Steve introduced our speaker for the day: Jose A. Fajardo. Jose is the president and general manager of Hawaii Public Radio. Hawaii Public Radio started in 1981 at UH Manoa. There is one studio location now, 15 transmitter sites, 37 full-time employees, 22 part-time employees, 49 regular volunteers, 400 occasional volunteers, 14,699 members and 195,000 listeners a week.

PP/PE Carol Riley welcomed visitors and guests. We had a wonderful group at this meeting

Jose started by telling us that he is a member of the Honolulu Rotary Club. He was a Rotarian in Texas, as well. He was born in Porto Rico and has held positions in Orlando, Florida and Killeen, Texas. He holds an MBA from the Crummer Graduate School of Business at Rollins College. The revenue is 6.5 million annually. Membership provides 57% of this money and 23% is underwriting. Expenses equal 5.2 million annually. Membership is growing. There is now HPR1 and HPR2. HPR1 is all news. HPR2 is classical music. HPR is third in the market for total listeners. HPR can be accessed through the radio, downloads, streaming, and Alexa. There are weekly concerts available. One comment: “I always knew you were good. I did not know you were great until you talked to us!” Jose pulled the winning ticket. PP Dave Livingston won. His guest pulled the unlucky marble (it was red!) President Steve reminded us all to like the Facebook and Instagram pages. He gave Jose a Four Way Test plaque. We all said the Four Way Test and the meeting was adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Carol Riley, PP/PE

PP Sally Blanchard introduced the three winners of the Hawaii Rotary Youth Scholarships. They are Taylor from Kalani High School, Nicole from Mid Pacific High School and Allan from Roosevelt High School. All are going on to Colleges on the Mainland.
