AboutCASA

Each year in the U.S., nearly 400,000 children are part of a real-life courtroom drama. They have committed no crime, but have been abused, neglected or abandoned by their families. It is up to a juvenile court judge to decide where these children will

•end their future. Sometimes at future gets lost in a child

welfare system that is overburdened and understaffed. As a result, many children spend a childhood in limbo, moving from one foster home to another until they reach 1 B.

In 1991, more than 28,000 men and women spoke up for these children in juvenile court as Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA volunteers. They provided millions of dollars worth of service for some 91,000

displaced children. They interviewed the child. The parents. Teachers. Doctors. Relatives. They tried to find the information necessary to help judges make more appropriate placement decisions - taking into account the special needs of each individual child. Their goal for these children: safe, secure and permanent homes.

Today, there are more than 520 CASA programs serving abused and neglected children in 49 states. They are known by a variety of names, but share a purpose. The National CASA Association was established to support these programs. NCASAA provides training, start-up grants, conferences, technical advice, newsletters and resource materials to help CASA programs Speak Up For Children.
