in-MoLD SEnSing SPEAKER: BRAD JoHnSon SPE’s 2010 “Engineer of the Year”
The use of pressure and temperature in-mold sensing will be discussed in this short tutorial. The types of sensors available, the installation of the sensors, placement of the sensors, and the setting up of a process monitoring or control strategy will all be covered. In addition, demonstrations of some of the uses of sensors will be given in Penn State’s processing lab.

Hello ..... it is hard to believe that it has been two years since I took over as President of this Section. I have tried to find speakers that were of interest to the local section. I hope you found them interesting. I enjoyed the last two years. The NWPA Board of Directors has been a great group and I am glad I got to work with them. Rob Cooney will be taking over as President in June. It has been a great experience being your president.
This will be the last newsletter until August. We will be putting out in-formation on the Golf Outing before the next newsletter. aboutourspeaker-BradJohnsonBrad has been teaching in Penn State Erie’s plastics engineering technology program since 1994. Prior to joining Penn State, he accumulated eleven years of industrial experience, most of which were spent as program manager, design engineer, project/processing engineer, and production supervisor at Osram Sylvania. His primary expertise is in injection molding and process optimization. Along with developing some of the processing classes, he has also taught plastic materials and quality control classes while at Penn State. Brad holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech. He was recently named SPE’s 2010 “Engineer of the Year” for the Injection Molding Division.

Behrend Plastics Instructor, Jason Williams, shows students some of the aspects of the school’s new Liquid Silicone Rubber injection molding machine. The machine, which was purchased with grant money and received on April 22nd, will be used extensively for research in medical molding applications. There are also several student projects planned utilizing the LSR press. “Now that we have the molding machine” says Williams, “the next
step is to get some molds to shoot”. Initial machine startup was done with a thermoset test mold. The school is working with a local tool shop to build their first trial LSr mold. “LSR molds are vastly different from your standard thermoplastics molds,” continues Williams. “We have very little experience in this molding method and no one in our region is molding LSR, either. So I guess we will all have to learn together”. The school also hopes to assist other local companies that might be starting or interested in the LSr field.

Keynote speaKer Mr. John Golombeck is Director of Systems Engineering for Northrop Grumman Corporation, with re-sponsibility for all system engineering activities. Mr. Golombeck joined Northrop Grumman in 1981, and has held a number of management positions with increasing responsibility in the company’s engineer-ing and manufacturing organizations as well as the System Development and Technology Division. As Director of Engineering, Capability Development, Mr. Golombeck oversees assessment and strategic planning for the future capability needs related to human resources, processes, infrastructure and tech-nology. As Vice President of Navy and Surface Systems within the System Development and Technology Division, he was responsible for creating, winning and executing developmental programs in surface and underwater navy, land force vehicle electronics and homeland security.
Earlier, Mr. Golombeck was Vice President of Engineering and Manufacturing, overseeing technical and manufacturing aspects for the Navigation and Space Systems Division, including oversight of 13 domes-tic and international locations. The division comprised of approximately 4,000 people focused on naviga-tion, integrated avionics, space sensors, IFF systems and fiber optic acoustic systems. Mr. Golombeck also has a background in advanced device technology development including silicon, silicon germanium, silicon carbide, gallium arsenide and other compound semiconductor materials such as gallium nitride. He has also been responsible for the development of transmitters, T/R modules, power supplies, mag-netics, receiver protectors, phase shifters and other ancillary equipment.
Mr. Golombeck received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1981 and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1985. He also attended General Manager’s training at the Harvard Business School.
aBoUt tHe ConFerenCe The Richard J. Fasenmyer Conference showcases the results of year-long School of Engineering senior capstone projects supervised and managed by students and guided by their faculty and industry advis-ers. In many cases, the projects address applied problems posed by industrial sponsors.
In 2005, the conference was named to honor the legacy of Richard J. Fasenmyer. An Alumni Fellow and Distinguished Alumnus of the University, Fasenmyer was the first alumnus of Penn State Behrend to donate $1 million to the college.
