Venessa Betancourt is truly enthusiastic and humbled to work in cooperation with the SPC. Rafael Hernando, III Middle School community to ensure that tomorrow’s leaders are learning today. Presently, Hernando enjoys national recognition for academic and cultural

excellence from the National Center of Urban Education as a result of steadfast commitment from staff, students, and parents and has received 7 Star Distinction from the Texas Education Agency under the 2016 accountability standards and ratings.

As the leader of the campus, Betancourt believes it is their responsibility to eliminate barriers which impede success. Because adversity should challenge us, never defeat us, the campus offers endless opportunities. Scholars are afforded a rigorous curriculum, rich exposure to the arts, and leadership stewardship through the vehicle of their athletic and extracurricular programs.

Will the school have open enrollment?No, enrollment will follow district policy and regulations. Students outside of school boundaries may apply for a transfer as per policy.

Uniform PolicyAre students required to wear a school uniform? Yes. All students are required to wear uniforms. Additional and specific uniform guidelines/policy will be provided during registration.

TransportationIs transportation provided for students attending the school?Yes. Transportation is available for all students who qualify under policy and regulations. This includes students who live further than two miles from the campus or that may have to cross a major thoroughfare.

SPC. Rafael Hernando III Middle School HistorySPC Rafael Hernando III Middle was originally opened in 2007 and temporarily housed Chester E. Jordan Elementary School students and staff while their permanent campus was constructed. Jordan Elementary was completed during the summer of 2009, opening the door for the formation of Hernando Middle School.

The new middle school campus, located at 3451 Rich Beem Blvd in the heart of the district’s fast growing El Dorado feeder pattern, opened on August 3, 2009 for the 2009-2010 school year. Hernando Middle School serves students from Hurshel Antwine, Chester E. Jordan, Purple Heart and Sgt. Roberto Ituarte schools.

The school was designed to serve 1200 students from sixth to eighth grade. The 199,000-square-foot facility was built as a combo campus along with Sgt. Roberto Ituarte Elementary School. The school is named after Specialist Rafael Hernando, a decorated war veteran and dedicated volunteer to the Socorro Independent School District. Throughout the years he has volunteered many hours tirelessly to the community including co-founding the Socorro ISD Volunteer After School Sports Program, advocated for his fellow brothers in arms, and organized the Paralyzed Veterans of America in El Paso. To this day he is active in recognizing the service and sacrifice of veterans throughout the region.

Venessa Betancourt se siente muy entusiasmada y honrada de trabajar con la comunidad de la Secundaria Spc. Rafael Hernando III porque quiere asegurar que los líderes del mañana aprendan hoy. El Centro Nacional para la Educación Urbana ha otorgado a Hernando el reconocimiento a nivel nacional por su excelencia académica y cultural, esto

es resultado del firme compromiso del personal, los estudiantes y sus padres. Por su parte, la Agencia de Educación de Texas le ha entregado 7 Distinciones Estrella por los estándares y evaluaciones de responsabilidad.

Betancourt piensa que como líder de su escuela, es su responsabilidad el eliminar las barreras que impidan el éxito. El campus ofrece un sinnúmero de oportunidades, pues la adversidad debe retarnos, mas nunca derrotarnos. Los alumnos cuentan con un plan de estudios exigente, una gran exposición al arte y manejo del liderazgo a través de programas deportivos y extracurriculares.

Historia de la Escuela Secundaria Spc. Rafael Hernando, IIILa Secundaria SPC Rafael Hernando III abrió originalmente sus puertas en el año 2007 albergando temporalmente a los estudiantes y al personal de la Primaria Chester E. Jordan. Las instalaciones permanentes de la primaria se terminaron de construir en el verano de 2009, dando paso a la formación de la Secundaria Hernando.

El nuevo plantel de la secundaria, ubicado en la calle Rich Beem Blvd # 3451 en el centro del área de El Dorado, fue inaugurado el 3 de agosto de 2009 para el ciclo escolar 2009-2010. La Escuela Secundaria Hernando atiende a estudiantes de Hurshel Antwine, Chester E. Jordan, Purple Heart y Sgt. Roberto Ituarte.

La escuela fue diseñada para 1,200 alumnos de sexto a octavo. Fue construida para compartir sus 199,000 pies cuadrados con la Primaria Sgto. Roberto Ituarte. Recibe su nombre en honor a Rafael Hernando, condecorado veterano de guerra y voluntario comprometido con el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Socorro. Durante varios años ha trabajado incansablemente por la comunidad. Él es uno de los fundadores del programa Voluntario de deportes después de Escuela (VASSP) por sus letras en ingles, ha abogado por sus compañeros militares, y organizado la asociación Veteranos Paralizados de Estados Unidos en El Paso. Academic Strategic PlanSPC. Rafael Hernando, III campus leaders, faculty, and staff members will ensure that students receive a quality education by working collaboratively towards the fulfillment of educational goals at the federal, state, and district level. Campus professional administration, faculty, and staff engage in practices and initiatives that continue to propel Hernando from good to great. Our continued focus is excellence and beyond for all students by persisting in targeted and timely interventions for students whom are faced with academic and social barriers, meaningful and relevant staff development in the areas of SPED/CT teaching, use of technology,Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), Empowering Writers, KAGAN Cooperative Learning, Thinking Maps, and the Fundamental Five.

At Hernando, scholars can challenge themselves with regards to the curriculum with courses in English, Math, Social Studies and Science while becoming 21st Century Learners through the integration of technology within their classrooms. Scholars also have the opportunity to flourish before reaching high school by taking Algebra, Spanish, Computer Programming, and Gateway I and II, which would give them a jump start of 6 high school credits. The opportunities are endless as we offer a variety of extra-curricular activities through Fine Arts, Athletics, UIL, Destination Imagination, Robotics Programs, Student Council and National Junior Honor Society, that all provide opportunities to develop leadership qualities. All this, coupled with our AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program help to build tomorrow’s leaders today.

En Hernando, los alumnos pueden superarse tomando cursos de Inglés, Matemáticas, Ciencias Sociales y Ciencias Naturales, volviéndose Aprendices del Siglo XXI a través de la integración de la tecnología en sus salones. Los estudiantes tienen también la oportunidad de crecer antes de llegar a la preparatoria, llevando clases de Álgebra, Español, Programación, ‘Gateway’ I y ‘Gateway’ II, lo cual los impulsará con 6 créditos de preparatoria. Las oportunidades son infinitas, ya que ofrecemos una gran variedad de actividades extracurriculares: Bellas Artes, Deportes, Liga Interescolar Universitaria (UIL, por sus siglas en inglés), Destino Imaginación, Robótica, Sociedad de Alumnos y Sociedad Nacional Juvenil de Honor. Esto les dará oportunidad de desarrollar cualidades de liderazgo. Todo esto, junto con el programa AVID, nos ayuda a formar hoy a los líderes del mañana.
