NO.1 ANN COMPTON AWARDED FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP Ann Compton, a second year accounting student, was awarded a $1000 scholarship from the Educational Resources Foundation. Ann, a Wellford native, has maintained a 4.0 grade point average in her ma- jor at Spartanburg Tech. In addition, she has worked as assistant editor of the college's student newspaper, and has served as secretary of the Delta Beta Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Lamda, a business organi- zation. She placed first in ac- counting at Phi Beta Lambda's state leadership conference, and represented the state at the national conference held in Washington, D.C., this past summer. Ann is currently work- ing part-time in the college's accounting lab, tutoring other students. The scholarship en- dowment was created by ERF for Technical Education and Economic Development, and is awarded annually to a second year student in each of South Carolina's 16 technical colleges. The awards are given based on outstanding achievements, which include participation in college and community activi- ties, and academic achieve- ment. CONGRATULATIONS, ANN! ASCET CLUB NEWS

The ASCET Club, the Spartanburg Technical CollegeStudent Chapter of the American Society of Certified En­gineering Technicians, has enjoyed a busy fall of1990. Theclub, which is a professional organization available forstudents in engineering technology, strives to provide itsmembers on opportunity to learn more about their chosencareer field and to annually sponsor scholarships for de­serving students. (Scholarship winners for the fall quarterof 1990 are Kenneth Sarratt, Richard Ruebush, TracyClinch, and Zulfikar Dossaji.)

The club began the year with a membership campaign inSeptember and now has 49 members. ASCET sponsored abooth at Halloween Happening on October 31st to sell hatsand license plates with the Spartanburg Tech logo. An­other fund raising project in November was a hamburgercookout held in front of the Ledbetter building. The clubassisted Student Services by serving as hall monitorsduring winter quarter registration. ASCET adopted theHaven, a refuge for displaced families, and collected food,clothing, and household items in December. Apresentationof the collected items was made to the Director of theHaven, Milt Fletcher, on December 19th. 1990-91 Officersfor the ASCET Club are: Steve Lux, Pres.; Todd Genobles,V.Pres.; and Tracy Clinch, Sec. Directors are: Ken Sarratt,Sandi Wall, Robert Giannone, Dennis Thompson, andDavid Green. The faculty advisor is Jim McKinney.

FEATURED NEW EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH

Spartanburg Technical College recently hired new fac­ulty and staff members. The new members to be featuredinclude Art Decker, Dr. Bruce Dillenbeck, Dr. FrankTownsend and Peter Stone.

Art Decker, a graduate of the University of South Caro­lina, has joined the college as the Admissions ServicesCoordinator. Decker previously served as director ofMansfield Business College in Spartanburg. He and hiswife, Julia, have three children and reside in Spartanburg.

Dr. Bruce Dillenbeck joins the Division of Arts and Sci­ences as a history instructor. He primarily will teachclasses for the University Transfer Program. A native ofTallahassee, Florida, he earned his bachelor's and master'sdegrees in history from the University of South Florida inTampa. He earned his doctorate in history from FloridaState University in Tallahassee, where he also worked asan adjunct professor and teaching assistant. He now livesin Spartanburg with his new wife, Lynn.

Dr. Frank Townsend joins the college as a math instruc­tor. A graduate of North Carolina State, Townsend previ­ously worked as a math instructor at Aiken Technical Col­lege. He and his wife Catherine live in Ninety Six.

Peter Stone joins the staff as a marketing instructor.Herecently moved to Greenville from Coral Springs, Florida,where he worked for CEM- KAM, Inc. He graduated cumlaude from Baptist College of Charleston and is currentlypursuing his master's degree. Stone is a member ofthe AirForce Reserves and he and his wife, Cindy, have an 8- yearold daughter.

SPARTANBURG TECH JOBPLACEMENT OFFICE

One of the main functions of the Job Placement OfficeatSpartanburg Technical College is to provide job placementassistance to our students and graduates, offering quali­fied candidates to business and industry. The office re­ceives job information from prospective employers andquickly circulates this information to students and gradu­ates. Full and part time employment opportunities areregularly posted at the college, and a special mailingservice notifies registered graduates of these positions.

Included in the Job Placement Office is a Career Centerto assist students in career decision making. Also includedin the Center is a career information library onjob descrip­tions, which includes labor market information, guides tocareers, interest inventories, and federal/state employ­ment information.

The Job Placement Office also provides guides and work­shops on resume preparation and interviewing skills. Thegoal ofthe department is to find the right job for the studentor graduate.The Spartanburg Tech Job Placement Officeis a member

of the Spartanburg Area Personnel Association and theSouth Carolina Co-Op and Placement Association.
